Fauquier to Amherst. Williamsburgh.
2 Augst 1763. Having consulted the full Council, he had decided not to call the Assembly or to attempt to raise a Provincial Regiment owning to the delay involved, but to call out the militia to defend the frontiers. He had 500 men under Colonel Stephen on the North West frontier and another 500 under Colonel Anderson Lewis to protect the South West frontier. He believed the recent outrages in Virginia had been perpetrated by Northern Indians returning from attacking the Cherokees, and not by local Indians. Asks also for arms from the King's stores.

Note: Inches are given as decimals for formatting purposes. The original document used fractions. 1/4 = .25, 1/2 = .5, 3/4 =.75. Country refers to country of birth. Also, compared to the first two lists, the handwriting for this list is bad. It is hard to distinguish between a capital S and a capital T. I have assumed that "-ailor" is Sailor, and "-aylor" is Taylor for occupations.

NOTE: The above men (and over 150 others listed) were awol at some point in time during the French and Indian War from the Virginia Regiment who had been drafted out of the milita on 2 Sep 1757. Since we know Thomas received a BLW, (see below) he couldn't have been gone very long, and he DID return. Also, he is not listed as a deserter in Major Lewis' listing, above. Remember, constraints and responsibilities that you are familiar with that pertain to Civil War desertions would apply also to any other war. The cause of desertion was not due to lack of patriotism, the culture, or peer pressure, but in most cases was due to economic necessity. If you were a planter or farmer and did not plant or harvest your crop, your family would starve.
From the Thomas E. Shifflett diary, he states: " My Grate Grandfather Thomas came to America before the Revlusion Ware to rais tobaco with others. . . ." Most planters used their cash crop to support their family and/or to make mortgage/tenent payments. Failing to plant or harvest could result in losing your land or your tenancy and your family would be left homeless with no means of support.

Excerpt rom VA-Notes: Colonial Wars Bounty Lands at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/vanotes/vanotes16.htm:
Later in the colonial period, bounty lands were offered as an incentive or reward to men who performed military service during the French and Indian War; however, the area in which the land was available was closed by the Proclamation of 1763, so it was not until 1779, and after, that the bounty was actually awarded.
