ALICE ROSEMARY BATTEN
Alice Rosemary Batten, 63, of Stanardsville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29,
1998, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born Dec. 1, 1934, a daughter of
the late Moten and Addie Lewis Shifflett. She is survived by two daughters,
Jackie Coffey and her husband, John, of Chesterfield, and Angela Shifflett and
her husband, Irving, of Stanardsville; two sons, Sammy Batten of Chesterfield,
and John Batten and his wife, Rhonda, of Ruckersville; two sisters, Nettie
Shifflett and her husband, Roy, of Stanardsville, and Ellen Humphreys and her
husband, Charles, of Waynesboro; two brothers, Ellis Shifflett and his wife,
Doris, of Towson, Md., and Roy Shifflett and his wife, Arlene, of
Charlottesville; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Batten was a member of the Blue
Ridge Horse Club. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Church
of the Brethren with interment at the church cemetery. The Rev. C.C. Kurtz will
officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Ryan
Funeral Chapel, Quinque. The family suggests memorial contributions to be given
to Evergreen Church of the Brethren, c/o Jake Harlow Hr., 84 Childs Road,
Stanardsville, Va., 22973. Mrs. Batten’s children would like to say a special
thanks to her brother, Roy Shifflett, for his devotion and friendship during her

JASON BATTEN
Earl Jason Batten, 92, of Grottoes, passed away Saturday, May 5,
2018, at King's Daughters' Health & Rehabilitation in Staunton. Earl was born in
Rockingham County on April 21, 1926, a son of the late Sadie Bessie (Via) and
Allen Jackson Batton. He was one of the founding owners of Batton Brothers Store
and Garage and had owned and operated Jollett Springs Trailer Court. He served
in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict. On March 6, 1982,
he was united in marriage to Mary (Wade) Batten, who survives. Earl is also
survived by sister, Betty McGee of Grottoes; brother, Sam Batton of Grottoes;
sister-in-law, Goldie Batton of Grottoes; five stepchildren and two
step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by brothers, Clarence, Edward,
Winston and Herbert Batton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m.
Tuesday, May 8, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. A graveside service with
military honors will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Augusta Memorial
Park in Waynesboro with Pastor Tim Munson officiating. Memorial contributions

Mrs. Emma B. Garrison, 83, of Mt. Fair died yesterday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Carrie Walton, of Doylesville. She was the widow of Austin J.
Garrison who died April 26, 1958. Born June 6, 1879 in Albemarle County, she was
a daughter of the late Willie and Mary Dunn Batten. Surviving are five sons,
Dallas Garrison of Hershey, Pa., Fountain Garrison of Baltimore, Md., Paul,
Luther and Davis Garrison of Mt. Fair; four other daughters, Mrs. Arnie Garrison
of Afton, Mrs. Lottie Via of Hershey, Pa., Mrs. Mary Via of Harrisburg, Pa., and
Mrs. Elsie Coleman of Mt. Fair; two brothers, Otis Batten of Martinsburg, WVA,
Lewis Batten of Waynesboro; five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Sandridge, Mrs. Vertie
Sandridge and Mrs. Laura Gentry of Crozet, Mrs. Lilly Coleman of Mt. Fair and
Mrs. Norma McAllister of Staunton; 54 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and
two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday
at Brown Cove Methodist Church, with burial in Mt. Moriah Methodist Church
Cemetery, White Hall.

EMMETT B. BATTEN
Emmett B. Batten, 72, of Boonesville, a retired farmer died Friday night at Blue
Ridge Sanitarium after a long illness. He was born in Albemarle County on May
24, 1888, son of the late John H. and Mamie Dunn Batten. His first wife, the
former Ottie Haney, died a number of years ago, and his second wife, the former
Fannie Powell, died Jun 28, 1956. He is survived by three sons by his first
wife, Roy T. Batten, Charles E. Batten and Orlando Batten, all of Baltimore,
Md.; two daughters by his first wife, Mrs. Charles Mundy of Redline, Pa., and
Mrs. Joseph Zublick of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter by his second wife, Mrs.
Thomas Shifflett of Boonesville; a sister, Mrs. Percy Sandridge of Free Union;
and 16 grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Wesley
Methodist Church at Free Union, with burial in the church cemetery.

George W. Batten, 85, of Goochland, died Sunday night in a Richmond nursing
home. He was a retired farm manager and was the son of the late Edward H. and
Emma Marshall Batten. Survived by his wife, Delia Batten of Mineral; one son,
Wallace H. Batten of Richmond; three daughters, Mrs. Cordia Watson of Arizona,
Mrs. Alice D. Smith of Goochland, and Mrs. Patricia B. Lloyd of Mineral; one
brother E. Hampton Batten of Alexandria; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Lawson of
Alexandria, Mrs. Elizabeth Via of Grottoes; four granddaughters; three
grandsons; five great grandchildren. Funeral will be at Mt. Olivet Methodist
Church near Red Hill Va. 2 p.m. Tuesday with interment in Holly Memorial

HOMER EMORY "EDDY" BATTEN
Homer Emory "Eddy" Batten, 75, a longtime Alexandria resident, died Wednesday,
Jan. 23, 1991, in Mt. Vernon Hospital. Mr. Batten was born Aug 17, 1915, in
Batesville, and had lived in that area until 1955. He then went to the
Alexandria area and worked as a general contractor. He was the son of the late
James Monroe Batten and Lucie Gough Batten. He is survived by his wife, Ione
Birckhead Batten of Alexandria, formerly of Proffit, two daughters, Gloria Dawn
Johnson and Barbara Lynn Batten, and one son, Larry Arthur Batten, all of the
northern Virginia area; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at
Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, at 7 p.m. today.
Interment will be at noon Saturday in Monticello Memory Gardens in
Charlottesville.

JESSIE DAVIS BATTEN
Funeral rites for Jessie Davis Batten, who died Wednesday in Richmond after an
operation following a long period of ill health, was held at 2 o'clock today in
the First Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Mr. Batten
was born and reared in Brown's Cove and was the son of William D. and Mary Dunn
Batten and was 55 years of age. He married Miss Margaret Garver also of Brown's
Cove, who survives with four daughters, Mrs. Elmer Cason, Mrs. Ruby Bassett,
Mrs. Nina Collier and Mrs. Dorothy Chapman, one son, Raymond J. Batten and five
grandchildren. He also leaves four brothers, W. T. Batten of Staunton, Lewis
Batten of Waynesboro, Henry Batten of Carter's Bridge and Otis Batten of
Martinsburg, W. Va. and six sisters, Mrs. Austin Garrison, Mrs. L. K. Sandridge,
Mrs. Moses Chapman and Mrs. Everett McAllister all of Brown's Cove and Mrs. P.
J. Gentry and Mrs. Cole W. Sandridge of Crozet.

JOHN SAMUEL BATTEN
John Samuel Batten, 90, of White Hall, Virginia, and Heritage Hall Health Care
died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Heritage Hall where he had made his home
since June, 2005. He was born in Albemarle County, September 12, 1918, to the
late John Batten and Florence Walton Batten. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Hattie Frazier Batten; his brothers
Vernon, Charles "Jack", Russell, William and a sister, Polly Gibson. He is
survived by two sons, Hollis S. Batten and his wife, Betty, of Buckingham
County, Virginia, Robert Batten and his wife, Donna, of Earlysville, Virginia; a
daughter, Florence Bruce and her husband, Pete, of White Hall, Virginia; five
grandsons, Steve, Hollis Jr. "H.B.", John II, Chad and Stacey; two
great-grandsons, Travis Batten and Sam Batten; one great-granddaughter, Linda
Dawn; two step grandchildren, Tammi Oliva and Brad Clore; one brother, Herbert
Batten and his wife, Lilly, of Dyke, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Bobbi Cook and
her husband, Bernard, of Waynesboro, Virginia; many nieces and nephews including
special nieces, Paula D'Ambrosia of New York, Juanita Garrison and Dorothy
McAllister and special nephews, Paul Walton, Claude Walton, James Thomas, Roy
Batten and James Gibson. He was devoted to his family and was a foster parent
for numerous years to 38 foster children. He was a farmer for 25 years for Harry
Clark until Mr. Clark's death and then continued many years as a farmer for Dr.
Payne of Garth Road and Dr. Summey of Millington Road until his retirement. He
also enjoyed many evenings helping his neighbors and his son Robert on his farm
in Earlysville, Virginia before his illness. He leaves his beloved dog, Ranger
in the care of his grandsons Stacey and Chad. He was a member of Mt. Moriah
United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage
Hall for their many years of devotion and care. A special thanks to Chrystal
Dean, Linda Dickinson, Angela Dickerson, Bessie Earhart, Crystal Davis, Isiah
Walker and Ernest Jones, Dana Shifflett and of course, Tina Rutt. Everyone at
Heritage was special to our Dad and we thank you for your care through the
years. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2008, at
Moriah United Methodist Church with Pastor Chris McClain officiating. Interment

Lemmy G. Batten, 69, of Route 1, North Garden died at his home Sunday [July 25,
1982] Afternoon. Born in Albemarle County on Oct. 12, 1912, he was the son of
the late Andrew F. and Lillie Estes Batten. He was a member of Browns Cove
Methodist Church and the retired owner of Batten's Grocery on Rt. 29 South.
Survived by his wife Lizzie F. Batten; one daughter, Lula M. Garrison of
Baltimore, Md; two sons, Harrison L. Batten and George E. Batten, both of
Charlottesville; two sisters, Viola Garrison of White Hall and Effie Gibson of
Ivy; 9 grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral service 2 p.m.
Wednesday at the Joseph W. Teague Chapel, the Rev. J. S. Colvin officiating with

Lizzie Frances Batten, 92, of Louisa, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at her home.
Born October 3, 1912, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late
Harrison and Susan Batten McCauley. Her husband Lemmy G. Batten also preceded
her in death. She was a member of Brown's Cove Methodist Church and worked as a
seamstress for the Blind Shop for 16 years. Survivors include he children,
Harrison Batten of Gordonsville, Va.; George Batten and Lula Melton, both of
Louisa County; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 11 great
great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Raymond Batten and his wife, Helen of
Hyattsville, MA. The family will receive friends this from 7 to 8 p.m. this
evening, at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday,
July 15, 2005, at Hill & Wood Chapel with the Rev. Bob Lloyd officiating.

Lucille G. Batten, 81, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, June 2, 2007. Born
March 29, 1926, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late George and
Pearl Garrison Gibson and was the wife of the late Russel E. Batten. Mrs. Batten
retired from Acme Visible Records. She is survived by her daughter, Rosa Lee
McAllister and her husband, Richard; two grandchildren, Richard Lee McAllister
and his wife, Pam, and Rebecca "Becky" Courtney and her husband, Keith; one
great -grandchild, Christina Courtney; one sister, Arlene Tolbert and her
husband, Dave; two brothers, Paul Gibson and his wife, Irene, and Johnny Gibson
and his wife, Shirley; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be

MARJORIE ANN BATTEN SHIFFLETT
Marjorie Ann Batten Shifflett, 62, of Boonesville, departed this life on
Thursday, April 19, 2001, at her daughter's home. Born May 29, 1938, in
Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Emmett Batten and Fannie
Powell Batten. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Mundy and
Agnes Zublick; and by three brothers, Roy, Charles and Orlando Batten. Mrs.
Shifflett was a member of Gentry's United Methodist Church. Marjorie was a
beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 45
years, Thomas Jefferson Shifflett of Boonesville; three daughters, Gloria
McCauley and her husband, Marvin, of Ruckersville, Caroline Curtis and her
husband, Robert, of Dyke, and Beverly Funk and her husband, Berlin, of
Boonesville; and by seven grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan McCauley, A.J. Vernon,
Brandon Curtis, Justin Henke, and Logan and Brittany Funk; and by a host of
friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church
at Prize Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. Interment will

Pearl Batten Pyles, 90, of Charlottesville, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 18,
2002, in a local nursing home. Born May 22, 1912, in Albemarle County, she was
the daughter of the late Joseph and Eliza Shifflett. In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husbands, Floyd Batten and Wally Pyles. Pearl
was employed at Ix's Silk Mill, however she was better known as the Avon Lady,
and was a member of Monticello Wesleyan Church. She is survived by her three
daughters, Helen Roberts and her husband, David, Lucille Hutchinson, and Odie
Gibbs and her husband, Richard; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren,
and four great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m.
this evening at Teague Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10
a.m. Saturday morning at the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Charles Jones
officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens. The family would

SHIRLEY D. BATTEN
Shirley D. Batten, 71, of Gordonsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord and
her loved ones that went before her, on Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at her home
with her loved ones around her. Shirley fought a long and courageous battle of a
very devastating disease for 61/2 years, with the most devastating being the
loss of her eye sight. Shirley was born March 7, 1935, in Albemarle County. She
was the daughter of the late Zack and Virginia Dunn of Albemarle County. She
graduated from Broadus Wood High School in Earlysville, Virginia. She retired
from University of Virginia Medical Records department, after 16 years of
service. Shirley was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and
sister. She loved the Lord and all of his beautiful creations and was a member
of Maple Grove Christian Church. She was the rock of her family and always loved
bringing her family together for the holidays and other family gatherings.
Shirley loved to read the Bible, Danielle Steele books, and the newspaper. She
loved working and playing with her flowers and gardening with her "Honey Pete".
She always loved to spend time with all of her family and friends either at her
home or theirs. She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and very devoted
husband of 31 of the happiest years of her life, Harrison "Pete" "Honey" Batten;
her five loving and devoted children, for whom she never stopped mothering and
being there for, from day one. David Marshall and Gail of Ruckersville, Glenda
Marshall of Gordonsville, Becky Oakerson of Charlottesville, Ray Marshall and
his wife, Tracy (mom's "other daughter") of Ruckersville, Darlene Cummings and
her husband, Calvin, of Charlottesville, and her stepson, Donnie Batten and his
wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, Florida. She also leaves to cherish her
memories, her 10 loving grandchildren, Shane Marshall of Ruckersville, Davra
Taylor and her husband, Ritchie, of Ruckersville, Mike Wills and his girlfriend,
Amanda, of Gordonsville, Maggie Castro of Charlottesville, Brittany Marshall
(her "Little Angel") of Ruckersville, Jessica Cummings (her "little red head"
currently serving a mission in Peru, Christen Cummings of Danville, Derek, Seth
(her "dancing partner"), and Nicholas Cummings, all of Charlottesville. Her
seven stepgrandchildren, Davie, Joseph, Deanne, Amy and Matthew, all of
Jacksonville, Florida and Ashley and Matthew Oakerson of Ruckersville; her four
great-grandchildren, Ashley and Caleb Marshall, and Olivia and Alyssa Taylor of
Ruckersville; her three step-great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Gabrielle, and Dylan
of Jacksonville, Florida. Her eight loving, supportive siblings, Odell Dunn and
his wife, Helen, of Charlottesville, Dot Kirby of Florence, South Carolina, Jean
Dudley of Chesterfield, Virginia, Roy Dunn and his wife, Peggy, of Richmond,
Virginia, Athlene Goolsby and her husband, Lee, of Afton, Kathlene Deane of The
Plains, Virginia, Audrey Goolsby and her husband, "Bud", of Afton, and Cora Horn
of Charlottesville, Virginia. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother
that died either at birth or shortly thereafter. She is also survived by her
stepmother, Lillian Dunn; and her two stepbrothers, Norman and Newton Morris,
and a stepsister, Rachel Jekins, all of Crozet, Virginia. Shirley is also
survived by many loving and supportive nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a
very special friend of the family. Barbara Stotelmyer, who was always there for
her and the family throughout her illness. The family would like to express
their gratitude and to thank Dr. Jeannie Densmore and her nurse, Valerie, for
all of their loving care. The staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital (S6 & S7), Dr.
Lisa Illig, Chaplain Suzanne Smith, the hospitalist and the wonderful nurses,
chaplain, and social worker of The Hospice of the Piedmont, whom all were

Nurses and Mom's therapist, Lisa Lewis, for the many times they were there to
help get mom well and strong again after her many trips to the hospital over the
last 6 1/2 years. The staff and doctors that were involved in her care the
University of Virginia Medical Center, especially her favorite neurologist, Dr.
Lyons and her cardiologist, Dr. Chris Lewis. The staff at UVA HealthSouth that
care for her for over a month and got mom back to where she could come back home
with her family after her initial bout of HSE. The family would also like to
thank Evans Oakerson for his generous gift of a lift chair for our mother. It
made it so much easier and less painful for to get up and down. Shirley will
surely be missed and never forgotten for she touched everybody's heart whom she
came in contact with. Mom, we love you and will see you again one day. The
family will meet at Hill and Wood from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2006
for family night. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2006, at
Maple Grove Christian Church on Proffit Road with Roger Browning officiating.
Interment to follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family would like to invite
friends and relatives to meet back at the church following the services for
fellowship. Donations may be made in her name to Maple Grove Christian Church,
Martha Jefferson Hospital Building Fund, Hospice of the Piedmont or their

VIRGINIA MAUDE BATTEN SHAVER
Virginia Maude Batten Shaver, 82, of Charlottesville died Wednesday, May 2,
2007, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was born, July 4, 1924,
in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late James H. Batten Sr. and Maudie B.
Batten of Ivy, Virginia. She was a member of South Side Christian Church. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F.
Shaver Sr.; a daughter, Gloria Virginia Shaver; four grandchildren, Joey Shaver,
Maude Ellen Shifflett, James Dallas Shaver and Polly Anna Shaver; a brother,
Cecil Batten; two sisters, Gracie Holliway and Edith Gibson. She is survived by
her children, Joseph F. Shaver Jr. and his wife Gerelene of Earlysville,
Virginia, Doris Hensley and her husband, Monnie, of Batesville, Virginia, James
R. Shaver and his ex-wife, Faye Fisher, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Edward W.
Shaver and his wife, Peggy, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Henry Shaver and his
wife, Wendy, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Becky Smith and her husband, Mike of
Stony Point, Virginia, Tommy Shaver and his wife, Sandy, of Fluvanna, Virginia,
Dale Shaver and his wife, Bertha, of Stony Point, Virginia, and Cathy Fox and
her husband, Harry Jr. of Stony Point, Virginia; a brother, James H. Batten Jr.
of Gordonsville, Virginia. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 23 great
-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m., Sunday, May
6, 2007, at Teague Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday,
May 7, 2007, at Teague Funeral Home Chapel conducted by David G. Bond.
Pallbearers are TJ Shaver, JT Gibson, Mickey Shaver, Bradley Shaver, Jimmy
Batten, Joe Fox, Bobby Stanley and Buford Adcock. Interment will follow at
McCauley Cemetery in Ivy, Virginia, beside her husband. Family and friends may
