ANNIE BELL BLACKWELL SHIFLETT
Annie Bell Blackwell Shiflett, 66, of Crozet died Friday, Nov. 4, 1994, in a
local hospital. Born in Albemarle County on July 22, 1928, she was the daughter
of the late Amherst Lee Blackwell and Vertie Dinkie Blackwell. She was also
preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Foley and Gracie Hosafloook; and one
brother, the Rev. Warren Blackwell. Mrs. Shiflett was retired from DuPont after
40 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Hunter Shiflett; one
daughter, Vertie Rae Shiflett Wade and her husband, Spurgeon W. Wade Jr., of
Ruckersville; a grandson, Spurgeon W. "Billy" Wade III; one half-sister, Mary
Turner of Shoemakersville, Pa; two-half brothers, Newton Daughtry of
Shoemakersville, Pa., Earl Daughtry of Reading, Pa.; and a number of nieces and
nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in
Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro with the Rev. Dr. Marvin W. Barbre
officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday at Hill and
Wood Funeral Home. Those who wish may send flowers or donations may be made to
the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville

ELZORIA BLACKWELL SHIFFLETT
Mrs. Houston Shifflet
Services for Mrs. Elzoria Blackwell Shifflett, wife of Houston Shifflet, of 227
Smith Street, who died Friday, will take place today at 1:30 p. m. from the
Robert L. Turner funeral home, 1765 Stratford Avenue, and at 2 o'clock in the
Messiah Baptist church. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery. A resident of
Bridgeport nine years, Mrs. Shifflett was affiliated with the Messiah Baptist
church. She was a member of the Missionary Society Usher board, and of Auxiliary
No. 140, of Col. Charles Young post American Legion. In addition to her husband,
she is survived by a son, William Coleman Shifflet, of Boston; her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. William Blackwell, Sr.; five brothers, Arthur Blackwell, of Hartwell,
Ga., and Lonnie, William, Jr., Thomas and Albert Blackwell, all of Bridgeport;
and three sisters, Mrs. Tinner C. Jones, Mrs. Elsie Speer and Mrs. Olivia
McIntosh.

ERNEST BLACKWELL
Ernest Blackwell, retired farmer, died at 8 o’clock last evening at the home of
his niece, Mrs. James Walton. He was a native of Albemarle County, son of the
late James and Bettie Batten Blackwell, and was 70 years of age. He never
married. One sister, Mrs. Lillie Morris survives. The funeral will be held at 2
o’clock tomorrow afternoon from Prize Hill Church at Boonesville, the service to
be conducted by the Rev. Freeman Fisk. Burial will follow in the churchyard.

GLADYS M. BLACKWELL
SEP. 6, 1913 - JAN. 27, 2006
Gladys Merita "Bunky" Grimm Blackwell, age 92, of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday,
Jan. 27, 2006, at Washington County Hospital. She was born Sept. 6, 1913, in
Grottoes, Va., the oldest daughter of the late George O. and Emma V. Shifflett
Grimm. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Leonard W. Blackwell,
who died Nov. 2, 1990. They were married in Hagerstown on March 30, 1935. After
their marriage, they lived in Grottoes and Waynesboro, Va., and worked in the
silk mills there. Also, both worked at Crompton Velvet Plant in Waynesboro. In
1945 she attended Bethany Bible School in Chicago, Ill., with her husband. Both
worked part time at Sears & Roebuck until he was ordained and called to pastor
in Newport News, Va. During the 40 years she worked in the ministry with her
husband, they built three churches: the first in Newport News, the second in
Norfolk, Va., and the third in Tacoma, Wash. They also served churches in
Irricana, Alberta, Canada; Middleton and Pontiac, Mich., Danville, Rocky Mount
and Eagle Rock, Va. Mrs. Blackwell loved children and was a youth teacher until
her 80th year. She continued to attend church until her death. She is survived
by a sister, Betty L. Willis of Hagerstown; also a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George O. Grimm Jr. and Earl Grimm;
and a sister Virginia "Ginny" Stone. "Bunky" will be greatly missed by many
friends. Services will be Thursday Feb. 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Horne Funeral
Service, 1300 N. Franklin St., Christiansburg, Va., with the Rev. Don Peters
officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive
friends Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral
Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, and also Wednesday Feb. 1, 2006,
from 7 to 9 p.m. at Horne Funeral Service. Mrs. Blackwell requested that in lieu
of flowers, donations be made to the Church of the Brethren Benefit Trust, 1505
Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120-1619.

GLADYS MARIE MARSHALL BLACKWELL
Gladys Marie Marshall Blackwell, 83, of 435 Old White Bridge Rd., died at
Augusta Medical Center at 9:57 AM on Wednesday, August 30, 2005. Mrs. Blackwell
was born June 15, 1922 in Augusta County, the daughter of the late James Robert
and Esther Anne Humphreys Marshall. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church
in Waynesboro and was employed by the former Morton`s Frozen Foods in Crozet. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther
(Sonny) Blackwell, two brothers, James Robert Marshall, Jr. and Fulton (Oscar)
Marshall, Sr. and two sisters, Virginia Sophia Marshall and Lucy Christine
Morris. Survivors include two daughters, Darlene Frances Robertson and Wanda
Gale Fullan and her husband Dan, one grandson, Steven Bryant, Jr. and his wife
Stacey, one great-grandson, Mason Bryant, five sisters, Lillian Morris of
Grottoes, Hazel Massie, Judy Fisher, Jeralene Eavers, all of Waynesboro and Ruth
Simons of New Bern, NC, two brothers, Mote Marshall of Waynesboro and Tommy
Marshall of Crimora, a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. A
funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, September 2, 2005 at the
Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Funeral Service by Pastor Ronald Bixler and Rev.
Bill Cole with burial to follow in Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers
will be Fred Garris, Gary Massie, Seth Marshall, Steven Bryant, Dan Fullan, Jay
Marshall, Eddie Marshall and David Elmore. The family will receive friends
7:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 1, 2005 at Reynolds Funeral Service in

JAMES HENRY BLACKWELL
PALMYRA - James H. Blackwell Sr., 82, of 321 S. Locust St. died Friday in Good
Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator from
Hempt Bros. Inc., Camp Hill; an avid gardener; and a member of Palmyra Church of
the Brethren and its Frank S. Carper Bible Class. He was the widower of Mamie L.
Shifflett Blackwell. Surviving are two sons, James H. Jr. of Mobile, Ala., and
Daniel L. of Hilton Head, S.C.; a daughter, Fern B. Beam of Palmyra; a sister,
Annabelle Phipps of York; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandson. Services will be held at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow in Rothermel
Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sand Ridge Cemetery, Albemarle County, Va.
Viewing will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Memorial
contributions may be made to his church, 45 N. Chestnut St., Palmyra 17078.

MAMIE PEARL BLACKWELL
Mrs. Mamie Pearl Blackwell, 77, died at her home in Boonesville yesterday. Born
in Albemarle County on Jan 25, 1891, she was a worker at St. Anne’s Preventorium,
and a member of the Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church at Boonesville.
There are no immediate survivors. The Funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the
Prize Hill Church at Boonesville, with burial in the church cemetery.

ROY B. BLACKWELL
Roy B. Blackwell, of Mt. Fair, died October 12, in a local hospital. He was a
native of Albemarle County. Born April 30, 1904, 72 years old, he was the son of
the late Permenia and Virona Shifflett Blackwell. He was a member of Browns Cove
Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife; Virgie Morris Blackwell, two
daughters; Mrs. Melvin Foster of White Plains, Maryland and Mrs. Eddie Foster of
Clinton, Maryland, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be held Friday at 2 p. m. at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church
with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Douglas Kanney officiating. The
family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p. m. Thursday night at the funeral
home. Hawkins Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

VERGIE MORRIS BLACKWELL
Vergie Morris Blackwell, 84, of Mount Fair died June 25, 1993, in LaPlata, Md.
She was a native of Albemarle County, born Nov. 30, 1908. The daughter of the
late Allen and Maggie Morris, she was married to the late Roy B. Blackwell. She
is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Melvin Foster of White Plains, Md., and Mrs.
Eddie Foster of Clinton, Md.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1 p. m. Monday at Mount Moriah United Methodist
Church with interment in the church cemetery in White Hall. The Rev. Wayne Moore
will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at the
Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Family suggests donations may be made to the
Western Albemarle Rescue Squad. Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

VIRONA SHIFLETT BLACKWELL
Mrs. P. E. Blackwell, 82, of Doylesville, died Saturday, at a Charlottesville
hospital. The former Virona Shiflett, she was born April 7, 1879 in Albemarle
County, daughter of the late L. Givens and Prenthia Gardner Shiflett. Surviving
are two sons, Roy B. Blackwell of Mt. Fair and Joseph F. Blackwell of
Doylesville; two sisters, Mrs. Victoria Marshall of Richmond and Mrs. Maude
Morris of Onley, Md.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The
funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mt. Moriah Methodist Church at White
Hall with burial in the church cemetery. Preddy’s Funeral Home is in charge of
the arrangements.
