ANNA FERN SHIFFLET BROWN
Anna Fern Brown, 90, Independence, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002. Mrs. Brown
was born Sept. 14, 1911, in Garden City, Mo., the daughter of Gus and Ida Bell
(Bridges) Shifflet. She was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Charles Franklin Brown Sr., in 1992. Her survivors
include a son, Charles F. Brown Jr., Kansas City; three daughters, Ida Jo Redman
and Sherry Lynn Anderson, both of Independence, and Norma Kay Burton, Kansas
City; a sister, Addie Kempe, Clinton, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Services were today at
D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral
Hills Cemetery, Kansas City.

ARTENA SHIFLETT BROWN
Artena Brown, 75, of Earlysville, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in a local
hospital. Born March 14, 1929, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the
late Ashbey J. and Manie B. Shiflett. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by a daughter, Jean C. Birckhead; three sisters and five
brothers. Tena was a presser for 57 years with Rudy's Cleaners and a member of
Church of the Brethren. She was an unselfish and loving wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother who cared about everyone. She is survived by
her husband, James F. Brown; three daughters, Bonnie M. Taylor, Kathy M.
McDaniel and her husband, Kenneth W., and Linda M. Brown; two sons, James W.
Brown and Steve M. Brown and his wife, Natalie; a stepson, James E.; four
sisters, Rose Ingram, Millie Morris, Rebecca "Peggy" Shifflett, and Norma
Parrish; a son-in-law, Edward L. Birckhead; 10 grandchildren, and seven
great-grandchildren, A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday,
June 4, 2004, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Joel P. Jenkins and the Rev.
William Coffey officiating. Tena's family would like to express a special thanks
to Dr. William Hammond, staff of the 2nd Floor ICU Unit and the 6th Floor at
Martha Jefferson Hospital and to nurse, Carol Wayner, for their care. In lieu of

DAISY MILDRED SHIFFLETT BROWN
STAUNTON - Daisy Mildred (Shifflett) Brown, 92, widow of George Wesley Brown
Sr., of 1366 Parkersburg Turnpike, died 8:30 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 7, 2004) at her
residence. She was born on May 7, 1911, in Barren Ridge, a daughter of William
L. and Laura Virginia (McDorman) Shifflett. Mrs. Brown was a caregiver.
Surviving are two sons, Douglas Eugene Brown of Crimora and Harry Gardner Brown
of Swoope; a daughter, Mildred Brown Jarvis of Middlebrook; and a sister, Maggy
Lawson of New Hope. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Brown was
preceded in death by two sons, George W. Brown Jr. and Thomas Edwin Brown. A
graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Pleasant Grove
Cemetery in Rockingham County. The family will receive friends at her residence;
and those desiring may call at the Henry Funeral Home.

DORRENCE CHUMBLEY BROWN
Dorrence Chumbley Brown, 84, of Stanleytown Health Care Center, Bassett, and
formerly of Pulaski, died Friday, Oct. 25. 2002, at the center. She was born in
Montgomery County, April 8, 1915, to Henry Clay Chumbley and Willie Mae Chumbley,
both deceased. Her husband of 58 years, Judge Robert I. Brown, also preceded her
in death as did three sisters, Virginia C. Hauser, Etta May Sturgill and Blanch
C. Shiflett, and two brothers, W. David Chumbley and Henry Merle Chumbley. Until
1988 when she retired, she worked as a legal secretary for her husband. She was
a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski and in her later years, she
and her husband attended the Pulaski Presbyterian Church in America. Well-known
for her musical ability, she played with several groups. She also had her own
radio program at one time. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy B. McGhee of
Collinsville; one son, Robert C. Brown of Stafford; one sister, Mary Helen ÒAmyÓ
Goins; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
and one step-great-grandchild. The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at
Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg with Dr. Rob Edwards officiating. Visitation
will be 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory and at
other times at the home of Nancy McGhee, 80 Woodshire Road, Collinsville.

DRAKE EDWARD BROWN
Drake Edward Brown, infant son of Nelson and Sherry Garrison Brown of King
Avenue, Waynesboro, died at 11:47 A.M. Wednesday Feb. 24, 1993 at Waynesboro
Community Hospital. In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Garrison of Crozet; paternal grandmother,
Annie Belle Brown of Afton; paternal grandfather, Charles Vest of Faber; and
several aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements were handled by the Waynesboro
chapel of Etter Funeral Home.

EVELYN LOUISE CRABBE BROWN
Mrs. Evelyn Louise Crabbe Brown, age
69, 1170 Chulie Road, Rome, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 12, 2005, in a
local hospital. Mrs. Brown was born in Floyd County on Dec. 6, 1935, daughter of
the late Johnny W. and Gaynelle Polston Crabbe. Prior to becoming disabled, she
was employed for 11 years in the Dietary Department at Floyd Medical Center. She
was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, by a
grandson, Robert Allen Brown, and by an infant brother John Perry Crabbe.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Lumpkin, and her husband, Clint,
Aragon; five sons, Dennis Allen Brown, and his wife Sarah, Rome, Billy Wayne
Brown and his wife Tina, Felton, Johnny Renay Brown, and his wife, Joan, Dalton,
Roger Dale Brown, and his wife, Kimberly, Cave Spring, and Christopher James
Brown, and his wife Rhonda, Chatsworth; a brother, Wayne "Sonny" Crabbe, Cave
Spring; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two nieces also survive.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson &
Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Rayford Davenport, the Rev. Dewey Atchley, and
the Rev. J. C. Oakes officiating. Interment will follow in the Wax Cemetery. The
family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home this evening from 6
until 8 p. m. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence of the
daughter. Mrs. Deborah Lumpkin, 2463 Wax Road, Aragon. Pallbearers are requested
to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and include;
John Stella, Clint Lumpkin, Wayne little, Jamie Salter, Larry Sexton, and Randy
Abernathy. Henderson & Sons Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements.

GORDON NEAL BROWN
Gordon Neal Brown, 74, of Ruckersville died Sunday, July 14, 1991 in a
Charlottesville hospital. Born Jan. 25, 1917 in Orange County, he was the son of
the late Roy A. Brown and Cassie Morris Brown. He is survived by one son,
Donald, and daughter-in-law Diane Brown of Stanardsville; two daughters,
Crystal, and son-in-law Joe Aldridge of Ruckersville, and Eva, and son-in-law
James Shifflett of Manassas; three brother, Guy E., John B., and Robert T.
Brown, all of Charlottesville; five sisters, Annie Darnelle of Madison, Ruby
Caverlo of Las Vegas, Nev., Lucille Bethel of Roanoke, and Martha Graves and
Barbara Coerper, both of Charlottesville; two granddaughters, Dawn Brown and
Daphne Deane; and three grandson, Neal Brown, Steven Aldridge and Darin Deane.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Shifflett Brown; one
daughter, Shirley Ann Brown; and two brothers, Frank and Richard Brown. Mr.
Brown was a retired carpenter and was self-employed. Funeral services will be
conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 1991 at First Bible Baptist Church in
Stanardsville. Interment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in
Charlottesville, with the Revs. Elbert Conley and Jim Woods officiating. The
family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Ryan Funeral home in Quinque.

HOWARD BENJAMIN BROWN
Howard Benjamin Brown, 74, of Wolftown, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in
Charlottesville. Born Jan. 10, 1927, in Graves Mill, he was a son of the late
Doc Philip Brown and Sally Breeden Brown. He is survived by two sisters, Mary
Stanley of Wolftown and Ruby Dodson of Orange, and a number of nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles D. Brown, and two
sisters, Edna Roudabush and Peggy Shifflett. Funeral services will be held at 2
p.m. Tuesday at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison, with interment in Rose Park
Cemetery, Wolftown. Pastor Jeff Shifflett will officiate. The family will
receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Preddy
Funeral Home, Madison, is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES P. BROWN
J.P. Brown, 81, of Iola died Feb. 13 at the Temple V.A. Hospital. Funeral
services are set for 10 a.m. today, Feb. 16, at Bedias Baptist Church. Burial
will follow at Lake Grove Cemetery in Grimes County. Rev. Gary Ladd will
officiate. Mr. Brown was born May 1, 1923 in Iola to John Henry and Fannie
Shiflet Brown. He graduated form Pankey school and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW
II. He served as commander of the American Legion Post #146 in Iola. He was also
a Grimes County Veterans Service Officer and past District Chaplain of the
American Legion District seven. Brown was a member of the Bedias Masonic Lodge
#651, a past Master of the Zion Masonic Lodge #313 of Iola and a member of
Shiloh Baptist Church of Pankey. He also coached Little League baseball for many
years Mr. Brown is preceded in death by his wife, Artie Brown; parents, John
Henry and Fannie Shiflet Brown; and three brothers, Eric, Cuthel and Abner
Brown. He is survived by five sons and their spouses, Jerald and Cindia Brown of
Bedias, Ronnie and Robbie Brown of North Zulch, Jimmy and Sharon Brown of
Brenham, Ray and Glyna Brown of Madisonville, and Carl Brown of Cleveland; 12
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. Pallbearers
will be Joe Brown, Bobby Brown, Doug Brown, Matt Brown, Zack Brown, Clint Brown,
Josh Brown, Jacob Brown, Jake Penton and Abner Brown. Southern Heritage Funeral
Home of Bedias was in charge of arrangements.

LEONA ELIZABETH BROWN
Leona Elizabeth Brown, 85, of Syria, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the
Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born April 28, 1921, in Madison, the daughter
of the late Elmer S. Dyer and Lena Weakley Dyer. She was also preceded in death
by six brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren, Jimmy and Tammy Cameron.
She is survived by her husband, James Fordyce Brown of Syria; two daughters,
Arlene Cameron and her husband, Allen, of Syria, Nancy Beard and her husband,
Robbie, of Culpeper; one brother, John A. Dyer of Woodstock; two grandchildren,
Christopher Beard and Carson Beard, both of Culpeper; and a great-granddaughter,
Emileigh Beard of Culpeper. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday,
December 16, 2006, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison with interment in
Etlan Cemetery. Pastor Archie Seale will officiate. The family will receive
friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

LINDA RAY CONLEY BROWN
Linda Ray Conley Brown, 59, of Radiant, Virginia, died Wednesday, January 30,
2008, at a local hospital. Born in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the
late Ervin Conley and Elaine Breeden Conley. She was also preceded in death by a
sister, Glenda Conley; and a brother, Kenneth Conley. Linda was a homemaker
whose life revolved around her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
horses and bowling. She was a mother and friend to all. Surviving her are her
children and their spouses, Stella Ray, Paula and James Watson, Sandy Paynter
and David Pritchard, Rocky and Jane Morris, Earle Paynter IV and Fonda Graves,
and Victor and Lisa Paynter; grandchildren, Dawn and John Herndon, Alex, Rocky
Jr., Amanda, Jacob, Alyssa, James, Manuel, Marcos, and the twins, Summer and
Autumn; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Linzey; siblings, Elizabeth Morris,
Becky Jo Farrish, Gary and Charles Conley, and Keith Lamb; a dear friend and
companion, Robert "Bobby" Jackson of Radiant; special friends, Earle and
LaVaughn Paynter, Patricia Paynter, Fount and Joyce Lam. Family time will be
held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Living Stones Church on E. Market St.
Charlottesville. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2008,
at Living Stones Church. Services will be conducted by Pastor Sandy Kelso. The

SAVADA ANNABELLE BROWN
ELKTON — Savada Annabelle Brown, 72, of Fairhaven Residential Services, where
she will be greatly missed, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the
University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Ms. Brown was born on
July 12, 1936, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Basil
Harold and Leona Mowbray Brown. Savada is survived by her sister, Myrtle
Shifflett and husband, William, of Elkton; one aunt, Dorothy Caldwell of
Harrisonburg; two nephews, Richard Allen Shifflett, William Harold Shifflett;
two great-nephews, Gregory Allen Shifflett and Richard Allen Shifflett; several
great-great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death
by one brother, Harold Timothy Brown, and one sister, Mamie Marie Brown. Funeral
services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in
Harrisonburg with the Rev. Laney Knight officiating. Burial will follow at the
Mount Clinton Cemetery in Mount Clinton. The family will receive friends on
Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements entrusted to the
Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
