ALMA BEATRICE COMER SHULER

Alma Beatrice Comer Shuler died on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Oak Lea Nursing
Home in Harrisonburg, where she had resided since December 2001. She was born on
June 20, 1906 in Ingham in Page County, Virginia, to the late Frank P. and
Fannie Baugher Comer. She was married to Fred Amos Shuler Sr. on August 29,
1925, who died on January 24, 1964. Mrs. Shuler is survived by three daughters,
Mrs. John W. (Mary Frances) Johnson of Lynchburg, Virginia, Mrs. Herbert M.
(Eva) Holtzman of Alexandria, Virginia and Mrs. Richard B. (Beth) Wampler of
Harrisonburg, Virginia; three sons, Charles F. Shuler and his wife, Martha, of
Elkton, Virginia, Fred A. Shuler and his wife, Ginny, of Crossville, Tennessee
and James M. Shuler and his wife, Margaret of Blacksburg, Virginia; seven
sisters, Beulah Huffman of Luray, Virginia, Mary Kammel of LaCrosse, Wisconsin,
Brownie Cave of Stanley, Virginia, Grace Shackleford of Charlottesville,
Virginia, Margaret Kupiec of Pittsburgh, Nellie Robinson of Luray, Virginia, and
Peggy Sepsie of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by 14
Grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers,
Frank P. Comers, Jr., Claude W. Comer and John Edward Comer; and one sister,
Catherine Nichols. She was one of nine sisters who attended Madison College and
was a school teacher before her marriage. She and her family operated a
successful Farm for more than 70 years. Alma was the oldest member of the First
Christian Church in Shenandoah, Virginia, at the time of her death and was
teacher of the Cheerful Workers Sunday School Class for many years. Sue was a
devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Pallbearers include
grandsons, Lee Shuler, Ray Shuler, Greg Shuler, Marshall Shuler, John Mark
Johnson, David Johnson, Paul Johnson, Drew Holtzman and Miles Holtzman. Burial
at Coverstone Cemetery.

CHARLES HOWARD COMER
Charles Howard "Ikey" Comer, 72, a resident of Shenandoah, died at his home at 1 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2010. A
son of the late Howard and Arbutus Cave Comer, he was born on March 6, 1938, in Page County. He lived his
entire life in the Page County-Shenandoah area, where he attended Grove Hill School. Mr. Comer had been
employed by Rockingham Poultry at Alma and was self-employed in lawn care. He was a member of the New Life
Gospel Church and enjoyed gardening and playing gospel music. On Aug. 20, 1983, he married Zada M. Comer, who
survives him. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Pat Shifflett of Elkton, Doris Cubbage and Ellen Alger,
both of Stanley; one stepson, Wayne Housden of Stanley; and 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He
also leaves five brothers, Ben Comer, Pete Comer, Ross Comer, Boog Comer and Peanut Comer; two sisters, Mary
E. Dean and Bett Emrick; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl
Davis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at the New Life Gospel Church with the
Rev. Harold Kephart, the Rev. Carter Dean and the Rev. Ray Berry officiating. Interment will follow in the
Cave Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 Sunday evening at the New Life Gospel Church.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the New Life Gospel Church in his memory. Arrangements are by the

GRACE MARIE COMER SHACKELFORD
Grace Marie Comer Shackelford, 87, of Charlottesville and formerly of Hampton,
died on Monday, Feb 27,2006 at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
She was born on Aug 5, 1918 in Shenandoah and was a daughter of the late
Franklin Pierce and Fanny Josephine Baugher Comer.
Her husband, Landon Shackelford, preceded her in death. She is survived by a
son, Marion Key Shackelford of Charlottesville; five sisters, Mary Kammel of
LaCrosse, Wisc., Brownie Cave of Stanley, Margaret Kupiec and Peggy Sepcie, both
of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Nellie Robinson of Luray; and numerous nieces and
nephews. A graveside service was conducted on Friday, May 3, at Bethel Baptist
Church in Palmyra.

James Douglas Comer, age 81, of Stanley, Va., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, in Stanley. He was born March 31,
1933, in Luray, Va. The service will be held at Calvary Independent Brethren Church Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at
11 a.m. Visitation will be at Calvary Independent Brethren Church Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Burial will be at Leake's Chapel Cemetery in Stanley, where VFW Comer Jones Post 621 will have military
honors. Doug was a well-loved man with a great sense of humor. He loved his father and mother very much. He
was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved the New York Yankees, watching Westerns, walking and
reading the newspaper every day. He loved his NASCAR, and most of all he loved his family. He retired from
Shenandoah National Park after 33 years of service as North District roads and grounds supervisor. He was a
member of Stanley Baptist Church and Stanley VFW Post 7899. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean
War. He married Joyce Ann (Hilliard) Comer on Nov. 20, 1953, who survives. He is also survived by his mother,
Evelyn Virginia (Jenkins) Comer of Stanley; son, James Douglas Comer Jr. of Luray; daughter, Cynthia Ann
Hilliards and husband, Roy, of Shenandoah; sister, Patsy Josephine Cullers and husband, Kenny, of Rileyville;
three granddaughters, Stacy Tinnell and husband, William, Tara Hilliards and fiance, Trent Painter, and Amy
Hilliards and fiance, Kevin Dinges; and five great-grandchildren, Nate Tinnell, Hannah Tinnell, Lindsay
Paxton, Sarah Shenk and Ethan Dinges. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude William Comer, and
brothers, Anthony L. Comer and Jerry Lynn Comer. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 420
Neff Ave., Suite 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, and also Parkinson Disease, 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Bob Hope Road,

JOHN E. COMER
COMER, JOHN E a former resident of Page Co. died 02 Aug 2001 at the Aspinwall
Progressive Care Center in Pittsburgh. He had suffered a stroke on 20 Feb 2001
from which he never recovered. Born 20 May 1917 to the late Mr. & Mrs. Frank
Pierce Comer. He served in WWII & was a Prisoner of War. He later received the
Bronze Star. Survived by his wife, Mildred Galbraith Comer, his caring son,
Eddie & 2 grandchildren, Susan & Lee. Also surviving are his sisters, Mrs. Ray
Huffman of Luray, Mrs. Fred Shuler of Elkton, Mrs. Bill Kammel of La Cross,
Wisconsin, Mrs. Herman Cave of Stanley, Mrs. Landon Shackelford of
Charlottesville, Dr. Margaret Kupiec of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Saul Robinson of Luray,
Mrs. James Sepcic of McKeesport & his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Claude Comer of
Stanley, Mrs. Frank Comer of Colonia Beach & many nieces & nephews in Page Co. &
others throughout the Shenandoah Valley. Interment in the Mausoleum at Penn
Lincoln Memorialo Park.
MARY MARKOS COMER KAMMELL

Mary Markos Kammel, 98, of La Crosse was called to her Lord on Friday, July
10,2009. She was born April 29,1911, in Shenandoah, Va., to Frank P. and Fannie
(Baugher) Comer. On April 14,1933, she married Sam Markos in Luray, Va., and he
preceded her in death on July 7, 1976, she married William Kammel, and he
preceded her in death June 6,1983. Mary graduated in May 1932 as a registered
nurse from Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va. She practiced her
profession in Virginia, West Virginia and at Luthern Hospital in LaCrosse, until
her retirement in 1972. Mary was a member of first Presbyterian Church in La
Crosse, where she served with Anna Cronon circle. She also was a member of La
Crosse Chapter No. 22 of Order of the Eastern Star, Naim group, AARP and an
active member of the Republican Party. Mary enjoyed her final years with friends
and staff at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse. Survivors include two
stepdaughters, La Vonne (Robert) Glasgow and Sandra (Joe) Demoran; a
stepson-in-law, Donald Humm; six step-granddaughters, Linda (Andrew) Temte,
Donna (Russ) Flower, Brenda (Jerry) Sibik, Cathy Conway, Shelly (Gordon) Krause
and Laurie (Chris) Colburn; 11 Step-grandchildren; three sisters, Brownie Cave
of Virginia, Dr. Margaret Kupiec and Peggy Sepcic, both of Pennsylvania; and
many nieces and nephews. In addition to her first and second husbands, Mary was
preceded in death by her parents; two stepdaughters, Karen Humm and Lorraine
Tanke; two Step-granddaughters, Joan Benson and Sue Tanke; three bothers, Frank
Comer, Claude Comer and John Comer; and five sisters, Catherine Nichols, Beulah
Huffman, Alma Schuler, Grace Shackelford and Nellie Robinson. Memorial services
will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Hope Chapel, 233 West
Av., S. La Crosse. The Rev. Dr. J. Taylor Haley will officiate. Interment will be
in Shenandoah at a later date. Family and friends may call from 10;30 a.m.
Tuesday until the time of services at the church. Memorials mat be given to
Gundersen Luthern Foundation, First Presbyterian Church or Shrine Hospital for
Crippled Children. Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse, is in charge of
arrangements.
NELLIE ELIZABETH COMER ROBINSON

Nellie Elizabeth Comer Robinson, 82, of Luray, died Friday, July 10, 2009, at
her home. She was noteworthy not only as the eighth sister in her family to
attend Madison College, but also as the College's youngest graduate in 1945, at
the age of 18. Mrs. Robinson was born on Sept.24,1926, and was a daughter of the
late Franklin Pierce Comer and Fannie Josephine Baugher Comer. On Feb 14, 1954,
she married Saul Joseph Robinson, who survives. Surviving, in addition to her
husband, are a daughter, Starr Johnson and her husband, Rick of Luray; a son
Stuart Robinson, also of Luray; four grandchildren, Christoper Robinson of
Arlington, John Johnson and Scott Johnson of Luray, and Danielle Robinson of
Germantown, Md; and three sisters, Brownie Frances Comer Cave of Stanley,
Margaret Virginia Comer Kupiec of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Peggy Page Comer Sepcic
of McKeesport, Pa. She was preceded in death by a stepbrother,Joseph; three
brothers, Claude W. Comer, Frank P. Comer and John E. Comer. as well as six
sisters, Beulah Mae Comer Huffman, Alma Beatrice Comer Shuler, Mary Ann Comer
Kammel, who passed away July 10, only a few hours prior to Nellie's passing,
Grace Marie Comer Shackelford and Catherine Charlene Comer Nichols. Mrs.
Robinson, a retired educator, began her professional career in 1945, joining her
sister, Catherine, teaching at Rosemary Hills Junior High in Silver Spring, Md.
She returned to Page County to teach sixth grade at Shenandoah school. she also
taught English, history and Latin at Luray High School and served as president
of the Page County Education association. In additon to her love of education,
she had a passion for music. She played the piano and organ at the St. Paul's
Episcopal Church at Ingham and occasionally at Christ Episcopal Church in Luray.
A former Sunday school teacher, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church,
Daughters of the American Revolution, the Shenandoah alumni Association, and a
former member of Luray Woman's Club and Luray Garden Club. She loved playing
bridge a was an avid baseball and basketball fan. A memorial service will be
held on Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episciopal Church by the Rev.
Alice Downing Davis. The family will receive friends at the Robinson home at 18
spring st., Luray immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the
family asks that memorial contributions be made to a scholarship in her memory,
the Nellie Comer Robinson Scholarship fund, Lord Fairfax Educational Foundation,
