ALDA RUTH MEADOWS LAM HENSLEY
Mrs. Hensley was born March 22, 1919, in Rockingham County and was the daughter
of the late John Wesley and Ethel Meadows. Mrs. Hensley was a lifelong Elkton
area resident and attended the Church of Solsburg. She was a member of the East
Rockingham Senior Citizens and attended Mount Pleasant School. Mrs. Hensley was
preceded in death by two husbands, Clarence Hensley and Glenvil Lam. Also
preceded her in death was one son, Calvin "Pete" Rudolph Hensley, and one
daughter, Doris Jean Lam. She is survived by two sons, Teddy Hensley and wife
Julia and Michael Hensley, all of Elkton; one daughter, Barbara Meadows and
husband Roger of Elkton; one daughter-in-law, Vicky Hensley of Elkton; three
brothers, Malcolm Meadows, Bernard Meadows and Matthew Meadows; five sisters,
Della Dean, Iris Dean, Geneva Good, Vernell Baugher and Evelyn Blose; 10
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Pastor Bob Aszbach and the Rev. Morgan
Kinney will conduct the funeral service on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at 2 p.m. at
the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. The burial will follow at Eastlawn
Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends Saturday
evening from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home or anytime at the home of her

ELKTON - Alexander "Alec" Hensley, 80, of Rt. 1, Elkton died Sunday at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday. Mr.
Hensley was born Sept. 4, 1902, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late
Parker and Sarah Dean Hensley. He was a retired farmer. In November 1972, his
wife Gracie Hensley died. Surviving are two daughters, Beulah Eliott and Peal E.
Hensley, both of Rt. 2, Elkton; two sons, Norman and Hershell Hensley, both of
Rt. 1, Elkton; a sister, Gladys Eppard of Elkton; a half sister, Addie Meadows
of Elkton; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be
conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near
Harrisonburg by the Rev. Donald Leatherman. The body is at the Brill Funeral
Home in Elkton, where the family will receive friends 7-8 tonight. Friends also

ALMA CHRISTINE HENSLEY
Alma Christine Hensley, 86, a resident of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement
Community, formerly of Penn Laird, died Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 28, 2009) in
the Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She was born April 21, 1922, in the Elkton
area and was a daughter of the late Lee Forrest and Flora Mae Odey Huddle. She
was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church. She was a co-founder of the
MOBCYM group (Pioneers) of that church, also an assistant with the church’s
Vacation Bible School. She also was a member of the East Rockingham Senior
Citizens. She had been employed by the Blue Bell Plant and by Shen-Mar Poultry.
On Dec. 24, 1942, she married Carl Hiser Hensley Sr., who died Sept. 27, 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Marion C. Hensley or Orange and Gary W. Hensley Sr.
of Penn Laird; one daughter, Debbie H. Gordon of Broadway, and one sister,
Margaret Meadows of Lynchburg. Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren
also survive. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Carl
H. “C.H.” Hensley Jr., who died Aug. 26, 1984, and Tommy Lee Hensley, who died
Nov. 17, 1971. Funeral services will be conduct 12 o’clock Saturday afternoon in
the Mount Olive Brethren Church by the Rev. Fredric G. Miller. Interment will be
in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 o’clock
Friday evening at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home in McGaheysville. Memorial

ALVIN LEE HENSLEY
Alvin Lee Hensley, 77, of Elkton, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019, at his
home. He was born July 11, 1941, in Elkton and was the son of the late Jacob R.
and Rachel Dean Hensley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his sister, Elsie Shifflett. Alvin graduated from Elkton High School and was a
carpenter for over 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a fan of Jimmy
Johnson on NASCAR. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam
War. He was a member of the Massanutten Hunt Club. On Sept. 2, 1978, he married
Vickie (Lucas) Hensley, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by
his son, Nathan W. Hensley and companion, Crystal Grey; daughter, Kelly Williams
and husband, Rocky; sister, Olivia Samuels, of Elkton; and a granddaughter, Mia
Prieto. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2019,
at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Pastor David Wade will conduct a funeral
service at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elk

Arlene S. Hensley, 68, of Dyke, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the University
of Virginia Medical Center. She was born September 13, 1939, in Charlottesville
and was the daughter of the late Robert and Nancy Morris Shifflett. She was also
preceded in death by five brothers, Frank, Ed, Ernest, Robert Lee and Richard
Shifflett; and a sister, Etha Shifflett. Mrs. Hensley was retired from Siemens
in Earlysville. She is survived by her husband, Gene A. Hensley; two sons,
Marvin G. Hensley and fiancee', Shirley Shifflett, Bobby L. Hensley and his
wife, Tammy, all of Dyke; two brothers, John Shifflett of Dyke and Hazel Scott
of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Steven, Loretta and Jeffrey Hensley,
all of Dyke. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at
Evergreen Church of the Brethren conducted by the Reverend C.C. Kurtz with
interment at Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6
until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. The

Aubrey M. Hensley, 79, of Dyke, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at a Richmond
hospital. He was born April 17, 1918, in Greene County, a son of the late Albert
and Minnie Crawford Hensley. His wife was the late Mattie Morris Hensley. He was
also preceded in death by two sons, Albert S. Hensley and John Scott Hensley. He
is survived by three sons, Gene Aubren Hensley and Virgil Jarrell Hensley of
Dyke and James Stewart Hensley of Ruckersville; two daughters, Elvie Clements of
Schuyler and Laverne Tooley of Stanardsville; two brothers, Reese Hensley of
Front Royal, and Marion Hensley of Alexandria; a sister, Hilda Taylor of
Charlottesville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three
half-brothers, and two half-sisters. Mr. Hensley was a retired carpenter and a
member of Bacon Hollow Baptist Church and was a Marine veteran of World War II.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, at Bacon Hollow Baptist Church with
interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Rev. Malcolm Powell and the Rev. Wendell
Lamb will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at

AUDREY HENSLEY BERRY
Audrey Hensley Berry, 92, of Elkton, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Journeys
Crossing in Elkton. She was born June 28, 1915, in Elkton and was the daughter
of the late Warren Albert and Agnes McCoy Hensley. Mrs. Berry was a lifelong
resident of this area, and had worked in the cafeteria of Elkton High School.
She spent most of her time as a homemaker, and enjoyed reading, knitting and
crocheting. Audrey was a long time, and very active member of the Elkton
Evangelical United Methodist Church. Her husband, George Whitfield “Whit” Berry,
preceded her in death. She was also preceded by four brothers, Conard, Curtis,
Clyde and Eugene Hensley. Surviving are one son, Charles W. Berry and wife,
Judy, of Woodbridge; one brother, Adrian Hensley and wife, Jean, of Amissville,
Va.; one sister, Marguerite “Teakie” Braden of Sarver, Pa.; three
sisters-in-law, Lorene, Vada and Irma Hensley; and three grandchildren, Christin
Berry, Patrick Berry and Georgia, and Christopher Berry and wife, Jolene.
Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday morning at the Elkton
Evangelical United Methodist Church by the Rev. Patricia Riggs. Burial will be
in Elk Run Cemetery. There will be a meal served in the church social hall
following the service and the family will receive friends at that time. Her body
will be cremated at the Kyger Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to

Mrs. Betty Mae Hensley Morris, 69, of Charlottesville, Va., formerly of
Grottoes, Va., passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and
friends on Feb. 17, 2005. Mrs. Morris was born March 6, 1935, in Rockingham
County. She is survived by her loving mother, Mrs. Irene Hensley Lawson and her
stepfather, Preston Lawson, of Elkton, Va. She was a member of the Broadus
Memorial Baptist Church. She attended Massanutten Technical Center, where she
obtained her CNA certification. She was formerly employed at Camelot Nursing
Home. On Oct. 23, 1954, she married Bobby L. Morris, who preceded her in death
June 9, 1989. She was also loved by her three daughters and grandchildren, Linda
Crist and her sons, Michael and Jason of Timberville, Va., Robin Sipe and her
daughter, Andrea, of Grottoes, Va., Jessica Niziolek, widow of Mark Niziolek,
and their daughters, Emily and Megan of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister,
Carolyn Beam and her husband, Gerry, of Mount Crawford, Va.; two brothers, Lloyd
Spitzer and his wife, Shirley, of Hopewell, Va., Benny Lawson and his wife,
Nancy, of McGaheysville, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; her "special son",
Cary Niziolek; and her beloved poodle, Trey. To celebrate her life, memorial
services will be held at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church on Sunday, Feb. 20, at

Blanche Shifflett Hensley, age 82 yrs of Elkton died Apr. 19, 1993. She was born
Oct. 18, 1910 in Rockingham County. She was the daughter of the late Arais and
Nancy Eaton Shifflett. She was married Dec. 16, 1926 to Albert T. Hensley who
died May 30, 1975. Surviving daughters, Pauline V. Comer and Shirley Kyger both

The funeral for Brendan Lee Hensley, 21, of Route 2,
Elkton will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elkton Chapel of Kyger &
Trobaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Warren Lee Grant. Burial will be at Elk Run
Cemetery in Elkton. Mr. Hensley drowned June 6, 1993, after a boating accident
on the Shenandoah River near Elkton. He was born Jan. 31, 1972, in Alexandria
and was a son of Gregory Lee Hensley of Alexandria and Brenda Kay Hensley of
Elkton, who survive. He lived in Alexandria until 11 years ago when he moved to
Elkton. He worked for Wampler-Longacre Turkey Inc. in Harrisonburg. He was
married to Mary Joe Hensley of Harrison, who survives. Also surviving are a
daughter, Jessica Lee Hensley, at home; a sister Tiffany Nichole Monger of
Elkton; and a grandmother, Arvilla Monger of Elkton. The family will receive

Brian Patrick Hensley, 40, of Elkton, died July 31, 2004, from injuries he
sustained in a Motorcycle accident. Mr. Hensley was born August 16, 1963, in
Harrisonburg and was the son of Loyce Monger Hensley of Elkton, and the late
Warren Hensley. He was a graduate of Spotswood High School and a member of the
Bethel United Church of Christ, the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Skyline
Fraternal of the Eagles No. 4393. He was a Pipe Foreman for William A. Hazel,
Inc., in Chantilly for the past fifteen years. On April 30, 1988, he married
Alessa Brill Hensley who survives. Besides his mother and wife, he is survived
by three sons, Patrick Wayne Dean, Brian Coby Hensley, Warren Chase Hensley, all
of Elkton; three brothers, Warren (Jake) Hensley, New Market; Greg Hensley, Jeff
Hensley, both of Elkton; two sisters, Sharon H. Lewis, Lee, Massachusetts; Susan
H. Workman, Elkton; a maternal grandmother, Virginia A. Monger, Elkton; a
special nephew, Matt Hensley, Elkton; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in
Elkton. The Rev. Wayne Wright will conduct the service. Burial will follow at

Buddy Ree Hensley, 64, of Elkton, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, while hunting near
Elkton. Mr. Hensley was born April 5, 1943, in Rockingham County, and was the
son of Vera Elizabeth Eppard Hensley, Elkton, and the late Linwood Ree Hensley.
He was a lifetime resident of the area and retired from Merck & Company near
Elkton as a mechanic. He was a member of Blue Ridge Independent Church near
Elkton and enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. He served his country in the
U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Merck Rod & Gun
Club, Massanutten Hunt Club, Virginia Bear Hunters Association and the National
Rifle Association. On May 25, 1968, he married Linda Fay (Breeden) Hensley, who
survives. Besides his mother and wife, Mr. Hensley is survived by a son, Jeffery
Wayne Hensley and wife, Laurie, Elkton; a daughter, Shelia Kay Strickler and
husband, Leroy, Elkton; two brothers, Smiley Lee Hensley and wife, Louella, and
Willie Dee Hensley and wife, JoAnn, all of Elkton; four grandchildren, Whitney
Kaitlin Strickler, Dakota "Cody" Strickler, Lindsey Michelle Hensley and Emily

CAROLYN MARIE HENSLEY BAUSERMAN
Carolyn Marie Hensley Bauserman, 57, of Elkton, passed away on Monday, July 6,
2009, at her residence. Mrs. Bauserman was born on June 4, 1952, in
Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of Theodore and the late Rosa Florine Conley
Hensley. Carolyn graduated from Montevideo High School in 1970 and worked for
the Public Works Department for the City of Harrisonburg as an office manager
for many years. Carolyn was a CPR instructor for 13 years and was very active
with the American Red Cross. On Aug. 23, 1970, she married Callie Bauserman, who
survives. In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by a son,
Corrie Bauserman and wife, Kelly, of McGaheysville; a daughter, Bonnie Bauserman
of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Theodore “Teddy” Hensley and wife, Kathy, of
McGaheysville, and Larry W. Hensley and wife, Kathy, of Elkton; a sister, Nileen
Dobscha and husband, Robert, of Elkton; and three grandchildren, Timmy J. Sapp,
Taylor J. Bauserman and Tabitha J. Bauserman. Funeral services will be held on
Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Ridge Independent Church near
Elkton with the Revs. Brad Lewis and Gerald Meeks officiating. Burial will

Carroll Eugene Hensley, 75 of Elkton, passed away Nov. 5, 2015, at
his home in Elkton. Mr. Hensley was born July 13, 1940, in Rockingham County and
was the son of the late Albert and Blanche Shifflett Hensley. Mr. Hensley
enjoyed NASCAR and was a fan of Dale Earnhardt. He was a brick and block mason
and owned and operated Carroll Hensley Construction for many years. He attended
St. Peters United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Irene Shifflett
Hensley, of 56 years. They were married March 30, 1959. Besides his wife, he is
survived by his son, Rodney Hensley and wife, Holly, of Elkton; a daughter,
Teresa Comer and husband, Jimmy, Stanley; grandchildren, Dustin Lucas and
companion, Heather Lam, Chris Kisling and wife, Tonya, Shannon Lucas, Christin,
Lauren and Emmy Hensley; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Dakota Kisling and Abby
Lucas. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by sons, Carroll E. Hensley
Jr. and Carroll Ray Hensley; grandson, Zachary Lucas; brothers, Elwood, Leo,
Oliver, Gary, Billy and Shelby Hensley; sisters, Pauline Comer, Ruth Lam and

Elkton Boy Dies In Auto Mishap
ELKTON - The funeral for a Rt. 1, Elkton youngster who died Friday night after
he ran into the side of a car earlier Friday evening will be conducted 2 p.m.
today at St. Peter's United Methodist Church near Elkton by the Rev. Lewis
Armentrout. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery at Elkton. Carroll Eugene Hensley
Jr., 10, son of Carroll E. and Irene Shifflett Hensley, died three hours after
he ran from a private driveway near his home into the side of a car driven by

said the mishap occurred 6:15 p.m. Friday about 3 miles north of Elkton on Va.
856. Young Hensley died of massive head injuries 10 p.m. at the University of
Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, he added. No charges will be placed, the
trooper said. Young Hensley's death was the 11th auto-related fatality in
Rockingham County this year. Numbers 9 and 10 were the result of a gravel truck
crash at Mason Motors in Timberville July 3. Young Hensley was born June 12,
1963 at Elkton. Surviving, besides his parents, are one sister, Teresa Mae
Hensley, and one brother, Rodney Wayne Hensley, both at home; grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Howard Shifflett and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hensley, all of Elkton, and a
great-grandmother of Elkton. Pallbearers will be Earl, Roy and Ricky Hensley,
Gary Lucas, Ronald Lam and Garland Comer Jr. The body is at the Brill Funeral
Home in Elkton. The casket will not be opened.

Charles E. Hensley, 66, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at City
Hospital. Born October 7, 1942, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the son of the
late Norvin "Jack" Hensley Sr. and Nellie Morris Hensley. He attended the
Independent Bible Church. Charlie was very tender hearted and loved animals, he
fed every stray cat and dog that came along. He was an avid horse racing fan,
enjoyed most sporting events and loved the great westerns. He is survived by his
wife of 47 years, Gloria J. Hensley; two sons, Glen E. Hensley of Laurel,
Maryland and Steven D. Hensley of Martinsburg; one daughter, Melanie L. Brown,
of Martinsburg; two grandchildren, two brothers, Norvin C. Hensley Jr. of
Martinsburg and William O. Hensley of Huntingtown, Maryland; and one sister,
Linda Wibert of Charlottesville, Virginia. Funeral services were held Saturday,
August 29, 2009, at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel with Pastor Mark
Johnson officiating. Interment at Rosedale Cemetery. The family received friends
prior to the service on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the South Berkeley Chapel.

Charlotte Lee Hensley, 74, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at her home
near Elkton. Mrs. Hensley was born July 3, 1935, in Rockingham County and was a
daughter of the late Myrtle Morris. Mrs. Hensley graduated from Montevideo High
School and was a member of St. Stephen and the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at
Lynwood near Elkton. She had previously been employed by Sleepwear Inc. and Blue
Bell Inc., both in Elkton. On Oct. 28, 1954, she married Oliver Hensley, who
survives. Also surviving are four sons, Steven L. Hensley and companion, Jane,
Kenneth "Kenny" R. Hensley and wife, Jackie, Roger D. Hensley and wife, Sherry
and Roy A. Hensley, all of Elkton; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren,
three step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren and a number of nephews
and nieces. She was the last survivor of her brothers and sisters. A funeral
service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home
Chapel in Elkton with the Rev. Carter Dean and the Rev. Alfred Comer Jr.
officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Run Cemetery. The family will receive

Chester Lee Hensley, 46, of 1351 N. Main St., Harrisonburg died at his home late
Thursday night. Mr. Hensley had been confined to a wheelchair 12 years and had
been seriously ill two years. He was born Sept. 25, 1935, at Elkton and was a
son of the late Edgar A. and Mary Florence Hensley Hensley. Mr. Hensley had
lived at Elkton until moving to Harrisonburg three years ago. He had been a
farmer and an iron worker and was a member of the United Methodist Church. On
Aug. 29, 1953, he married the former Helen Shifflett, who survives. Also
surviving are two daughters, Patsy Jean Lilly of Harrisonburg and Annette Dale
Huddle of Arlington; seven sisters, Selena Fravel and Pauline Hensley, both of
Harrisonburg, Eunice Joseph of Hinton, and Alice Sellers, Elizabeth Watson,
Marylia Shifflett and Mildred McDaniel, all of Elkton; a brother, Eugene A.
Hensley of Elkton; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m.
Sunday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. Ralph Jenkins.

Christine Violet Hensley, 75, of McGaheysville, departed to be with her Lord and
Savior on Saturday, March 14, 1998, at her home. Mrs. Hensley was born on
October 4, 1922, in Elkton, VA, and was the daughter of the late Addie and Henry
Dean. On January 18, 1939, she married Clyde G. “Bill” Hensley, who survives.
She was known for her devotion to her Lord and Savior, her husband, family and
friends. She always placed the cares and concerns of others in front of those of
her own. Even during her extended illness she continued to bless others with her
warm smile and undaunted faith in her Lord who had been her friend for so many
years. Mrs. Hensley was a member of the Mt. Olivet Christian Church, where her
work and tireless passion for her church will be forever missed. At Mt. Olivet
Christian Church, she was a dedicated Sunday school teacher, treasurer of the
Mt. Olivet Ladies Fellowship and was a member of the church choir for many
years. She had shared her faith and love of the Lord with many and through her,
many have come to know and be saved by Him. Along with her work in the church,
she worked at Sancar in her early years and then worked for Sunnyside
Presbyterian Home for nearly 20 years. Her work at Sunnyside was a true love of
hers. She enjoyed caring for and attending to other's needs. Also surviving are
five daughters, Janice and husband, Jim Shifflette; Elaine and husband, Bobby
Diehl, all of McGaheysville; Doris Shifflett, Harrisonburg, Barbara and late
husband, Ralph Redifer, Elkton; Judy and husband, Billy Keyser, Richmond; nine
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irene Shifflett and
Pearl Royer, both of Grottoes and Margaret Shifflett McGaheysville; two
brothers, Elwood Dean, Elkton and Earl Dean, McGaheysville. She will be joining
both Ralph Redifer, son-in-law, and Brian Keyser, grandson, who have previously
gone to meet the Lord. Pastor, friend and brother in the Lord, Wayne Wright,
will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Mt. Olivet Christian
Church near McGaheysville. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
McGaheysville. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 this evening (Monday) at the

Cornelia Jean Hensley, 90, of Charlottesville, Va., passed
away with family by her side on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Jean was born on
September 20, 1931, in Charlottesville, Va. She was the daughter of the late
Phillum McCue Knight and Alice Morris Knight. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Waverly P. Hensley. Jean and Waverly were happily married for 55 years.
Jean was survived by her sister, Doris Knight of University Park, Fla.; her
sister-in-law, Nancy Hensley of Charlottesville; her children, Greg Hensley and
wife, Wanda, of Charlottesville, Lorie Ulery and husband, Joe, of
Charlottesville, and Susan Vaughn and husband, Glenn, of Strasburg; her
grandchildren, Amanda McLean and husband, Rob, Samantha Wade and husband, Curt,
Erin Balderrama and husband, Jose, and Megan Li and husband, Thomas; and three
great-grandchildren Bella, Alexander, and Anna. Special thanks and gratitude to
the staff at Albemarle Health and Rehab for the care that was given to Jean and
her family as we went through this difficult time. Visitation will be held at
Teague Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday, January 21, 2022, from

The Rev. Curtis G. Hensley, 85, of Elkton, passed away May 24, 2014, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Mr.
Hensley was born Aug. 27, 1928, in the Crow Hollow area of Rockingham County, and was the son of the late
Marvin G. and Emma Dean Hensley. He attended Elkton High School and served our country in the U.S. Army during
the Korean War. He was superintendent and construction manager for Ivy Garden LLC and a self- employed builder
for many years. He was a Minister of the Gospel for over 35 years, and presently was Pastor at the Open Door
Gospel Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Shifflett Hensley; a son,
Marty A. Hensley; infant daughter, Sharon E. Hensley; brothers, Clarence E. Hensley and Hilden B. Hensley and
sisters, Hettie Breeden, Pauline Davis, Eva McDonald, Louise Fitzgerald, Reba Brown, Wilma Burke, Thelma
Steele and Helen Lam. Pastor Hensley is survived by his wife, Ruth Hensley; sons, Curtis A. “Andy” Hensley and

by three sisters, Clara Sipe Shifflett, Bessie Sipe James and Lottie Sipe
Hensley, four brothers, Robert, William M., Jesse and Dorsey Sipe, a
granddaughter, Debra Hensley, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Jones Hensley. She
attended the St. Stephen Episcopal School at Berrytown near Elkton. She was a
homemaker and was caregiver for her invalid mother, worked briefly at Casey
Jones and also worked for 20 years at Virginia Egg Producers. During her
lifetime she shared her joy of cooking with family and many friends. She
particularly enjoyed taking her homemade coconut custard pies to the sick and
shut-ins. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Independent Church, which was very
important to her. On Aug. 28, 1931, she married her husband of 61 years, Murphy
Vernon Hensley, who passed away on July 17, 1992. She is survived by two sons,
Murphy F. Hensley of Round Hill, Va., Larry Hensley and wife, Leotta, of
Stafford, Va.; a daughter, Janice Marie Spitzer and husband, Clay, of
Timberville; three children reared in her home, a niece, Maxine Hedrick and
husband, Junior; a great niece, Mary Jo Oddo Halstead and fiancé, Philip
Morrissey; and a nephew, Jesse E. “Sonny” Sipe and wife, Frances, of Elkton;
nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. The
Rev. Gerald Meeks and the Rev. Brad Lewis will conduct the funeral service 2
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Independent Church near Elkton.
Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville. The family

Frances Fay Morris Hensley, 88, of Charlottesville died on Sunday, April 09,
2006, in a local care facility. Born March 7, 1918, in Orange County, she was
the daughter of the late Empire B. Morris and Dora Brookman Morris. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, William H. Hensley; a daughter-in-law, Anne
Hensley; seven sisters, Ellen Southard, Myrtle Garton, Mamie Bishop, Ethel
Breeden, Cornelia Corbin, Estelle Morris, and Nina Beahm; and one brother, Carl
Morris. Frances was a lifetime member of Monticello Wesleyan Church where she
had served on the Church Board. She retired in 1979 from Sperry Marine after 19
years of service. Surviving her are a daughter, Marian H. Haden and her husband,
Sonny, of Charlottesville; three sons, William L. Hensley of Gordonsville, Bobby
C. Hensley and his wife, Mary, of Shallotte, North Carolina, and Harold E.
Hensley and his wife, Sarah, of Charlottesville; two sisters, Mae May of Orange
County and Violet Racer of Orange County; 14 grandchildren; 25
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will
be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Monticello Wesleyan Church
with the Rev. Jim Moretz officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial

Franklin D. Hensley, 68, of Albemarle County, died peacefully at his home on
Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. Born May 30, 1934, in Albemarle County, he was the son
of the late Slaughter P. and Maggie Catherine Pierce Hensley. In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy "Pete" Hensley, Elwood
R. "Teeny" Hensley, and Alvin P. "Bootsie" Hensley; and a sister, Jean Hensley
Hutchinson. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police No. 5, The Blue
Knights, and was retired, after 32 years of service, from Charlottesville Police
Department, where he was instrumental in forming the Mounted Police Patrol.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Alexis V. Hensley of Albemarle County; his
children, Franklin "Bruce" Hensley and his wife, Kathy, of Charlottesville,
Fulton "Lance" Hensley of McLean, Kevin Dale Hensley and his wife, Diane, of
Charlottesville, and Velida Hensley Tyree and her husband, David, of Keswick;
three brothers, Slaughter Hensley and his wife, Mary, Tommy Hensley, all of
Charlottesville, and Haliburton Bruce "H.B." (Shug) Hensley of Harrisonburg; a
sister, Bernice Hippert of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, George "G.D."

Fred Laurence Hensley, 88, of Orange, died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Orange.
Born Oct. 27, 1912, in Greene County, he was a son of the late Ervin L. and
Sarah Virginia Breeden Hensley. He was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two sons, Curtis Hensley and Clarence Hensley; four brothers, Howard Hensley,
Ben Hensley, Floyd Hensley and Ernest Hensley; and three sisters, Alice Lewis,
Edith Hall and Mamie Lam. Surviving are his wife, Tezzie Suter Hensley; two
daughters, Virginia Hensley and Maude Lloyd, both of Charlottesville; two sons,
Roy Hensley Sr. of Orange, and Mack Hensley of Charlottesville; two
step-daughters, Barbara Timmons of Unionville, and Caroline Hoffman of
Charlottesville; a step-son, William Suter Jr. of Madison; eight grandchildren,
six step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren,
and five great-great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be at 1:30
p.m. Thursday in the Culpeper National Cemetery, with the Rev. Bruce Fincham
officiating. Mr. Hensley will be buried with full military honors by American

Gary Lee Hensley, 59, of Elkton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at his home. He was born Jan. 1, 1955, in
Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Albert and Blanche Shifflett Hensley. Gary attended Elkton High
School and was a carpenter by trade. He owned and operated Hensley Construction and also had been employed by
Greenwood Construction in Elkton for two years. He was a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge No. 2176,
enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his Harley. Survivors include his son, Christopher "Chris" L. Hensley and

Geraldine Sidney Hensley Kite, 72, formerly of Shenandoah, died Monday, Jan. 29,
2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Kite was born Feb.
20, 1934, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Henry Walter
Hensley and Nellie Dean Hensley. She lived in Shenandoah and the Elkton area all
of her life and was educated in Rockingham County schools. She was a member of
Mount Olivet Christian Church, where she was a nursery teacher for 19 years. On
Oct. 1, 1967, she married Leo Kite, who preceded her in death May 26, 1997.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley N. Shifflett and Jewel Virginia Knight,
both of McGaheysville; a brother, Curtis H. Hensley of Elkton; and a number of
nieces and nephews. The Rev. Wayne Wright and Pastor Jimmy Kite will conduct the
funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial

Glenn Douglas Hensley, 74, of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at his
home. Mr. Hensley was born March 30, 1931, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of the
late Hurdle L. and Evelyn Eliza Phillips Hensley. He was a self-employed painter
and was a member of Pine Grove Church of the Brethren. On March 13, 1982, he
married the former Polly Ann Thompson, who survives. Also surviving are four

Harrisonburg, and Lee Roy Hensley of Dayton; a brother, Galen Hensley of

Gregory "Greg" David Hensley Sr., 71, of Elkton, passed away March 17,
2024, after losing his battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born Sept. 22,
1952, and was the son of the late Leon H. Hensley and Eula Shifflett Hensley. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ron Hensley and
Roy Lee Hensley; a brother-in-law, Gary Shifflett; and a special nephew, Stephen
Thomas. Greg dedicated his life's work to becoming a meticulous and talented
sheet metal mechanic, retiring from Fluor Daniels Services. People looked to him
with help on their projects knowing he was the man to get the job done. Greg
loved cars and was an avid car enthusiast as well as a motorcycle lover. He
could be seen riding around in his tangerine candy apple orange 1968 Camaro with
two black racing stripes. Greg was a member of East Point Independent Church in
Elkton. He loved spending time with friends and was a good story teller who
loved to make people laugh. He was a great "paw paw" and will be missed by all
who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank Sentara Hospice staff,
Jillian, Jessica, Ericka, Cindy, Virginia, and Vicki for all the loving care
they gave Greg with his battle of pulmonary fibrosis. Surviving are his wife,
Lois "Babe" J. Herring; sons, Gregory "Dooder" David Hensley Jr., Justin Scott

United Church of Christ, the Junior Order of the United American Mechanics No.
149, Elkton VFW Post No. 9292 and a 1975 graduate of Elkton High School. Greg
was a former owner/operator of Elkton Chevron and was an artist, painting scenes
for family on rocks and wood. He worked construction for many years with his
father and brothers, and most recently worked on Junior Monger's farm and was a
self-employed mechanic. Greg was preceded in death by his brother, Brian P.
Hensley, his maternal grandparents, F. Weaver and Virginia A. Monger, and his
paternal grandparents, James R. and Mattie S. Hensley. Besides his mother, he is
survived by his son, Eric N. Hensley of Shenandoah; a stepson, Chris L. Hensley
(Wendy) of Elkton; brothers, Warren H. "Jake" Hensley Jr. (Teri) of Grottoes,

Harold E. Hensley, 78, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by
family, on Friday, May 4, 2018. Harold was a loving husband of sixty years to
Sarah H. Hensley; a loving, proud father to Donna Shull and Harold Hensley Jr.
(aka Slugger); a special GRIN Daddy to Shannon Shull, Thomas Shull II, and
Shaina Shull and his first great grandchild Thomas Shull III. Thomas was 47 days
old when he met Harold for the first time. Harold opened his eyes and had the
most beautiful smile on his face, which will be cherished forever. He was
preceded in death by his father, William H. Hensley; mother, Frances M. Hensley;
brother, William "Bill" L. Hensley; and son in law, Thomas "Tommy" F. Shull.
Harold is survived by his brother, Bob Hensley and his wife, Mary; and his
sister, Marian Haden. We need to thank many people including Hospice of the
Piedmont, VA Home Health Care, neighbors and friends for all their help and

Harry Mack Hensley, 69, of Charlottesville, formerly of Orange died Sunday,
March 6, 2005 at his home. He was born Dec. 31, 1935, in Martinsburg, W. Va.,
son of the late Fred Lawrence Hensley and Sarah Beasley Hensley. He served in
the United States Army at Fort Jackson, S.C., Fort Dixon in New Jersey and then
a tour of duty in Germany. He worked at the American Silk Mill in Orange for 32
years. After retirement from the silk mill, he worked for Liberty Fabrics in
Gordonsville for the next 10 years. Mack was an avid sports fan of Nascar,
horseracing and a Dallas Cowboy football team fan. He also loved throwing
horseshoes with his best friend, Doug Stanley and talking on the phone with
another good friend of his, Rufus Lillard, of Orange. Mr. Hensley is survived by
one brother, Roy Alton Hensley of Scottsville; two sisters, with whom he lived
with, Virginia Hensley Barnett and Megan Hensley Loyd, both of Charlottesville;
two aunts, Ann Dowell Boone, of Gordonsville and Clara Beasley Lamb, of
Ruckersville; and had a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family
and other friends. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence
Wilson Hensley and Curtis Roger Hensley. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m.
Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Gordonsville, with
interment in Maplewood Cemetery. The Pastor James Omie Shifflett will officiate.

Hershell Ambers Hensley, age 77, of Elkton, following a lengthy stay at RMH,
died on Jan. 25, 2004, after being transported to the Harrisonburg Health &
Rehabilitation Center due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Hensley
was born June 12, 1926, in Elkton, Va. and was the son of the late Alec and
Gracie Lawson Hensley. On March 6, 1996, he was preceded in death by his wife of
52 years, Lucille Rogers Hensley, whom he married on Aug. 31, 1944; a daughter,
Bonnie Sue Hensley; a sister, Pearl Hensley and grandson, James L. Armentrout
IV. Hershell served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Westinghouse in 1986 and
attended the Elkton Evangelical United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband
and devoted father to his children. He will be remembered as a kind and generous
man. Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Hensley Koogler and husband,
Glenn, Raphine, Va., Melody Hensley Branner and husband, Bob, Harrisonburg, Va.,
Sharon Hensley Mowbray and husband, Lenard, Elkton, Va.; a son, Sherill Ambers
Hensley and wife, Donna, Elkton, Va.; one brother, Norman Hensley and wife,

Hilda M. Hensley Taylor, 81, of Charlottesville died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at

Albert Hensley and Minnie A. Crawford Hensley. Hilda retired as a supervisor
from K-Mart after 17 years. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in

Hollis "Tommy" Marion Hensley Jr., 58, of Stanardsville died Saturday, July 14,
2007, at his residence. He was born in 1949 in Charlottesville and was the son
of the late Hollis Marion Hensley and Ella "Jewell" Reed Hensley. He was also
preceded in death by his first wife, Katie Frances Hensley; an infant brother,
Charles Franklin Hensley; and an infant sister, Angel Hensley. Tommy was a
retired Senior Meter Servicer for Dominion Virginia Power for 38 years. He

Irene Harriet Hensley Monger, 90, of 580 Hermon Road, Elkton, went to be with
her Lord on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at her home. She was born Sept. 20, 1914,
near Elkton, and was the daughter of William Kelley and Annie May Hensley (both
deceased). Irene was a member of the Church of Solsburg, where she served as
pianist, music director, choir director, Sunday school teacher, and served on
the Missionary Committee. She was faithful to all the meetings of the Church

marriage to Lloyd Whitney Monger, who preceded her in death on May 8, 1983. She
was a homemaker and spent her entire life in the Elkton area. Irene is survived
by three sons, Lloyd Whitney Monger Jr. and wife, Billie Jo, Gary Paige Monger
Sr. and wife, Bobbie Rae, Roger Lee Monger and wife, Barbara; 13 grandchildren,
Whitney Leeson, Alesia Talbot, Kathryn Monger, Sarah Hicks, Gary Monger, Kevin
Monger, Rebecca Grefe, Janie Patterson, Dixie Monger Tanner, Mary Louise
Hansbrough, Jimmy Monger, Bryan Monger, and Eve Monger; 14 great-grandchildren
and a number of nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her two
brothers, Reese and Ras Hensley. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday,
Nov. 26, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Solsburg by the Rev. Robert Aszbach
and the Rev. Morgan Kinney. Burial will follow in Elk Run Cemetery. The family

James Carroll Hensley, 72, of Elkton, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hensley was born Oct. 21, 1935, in
Rockingham County near Elkton, and was the son of the late James Wesley and
Della Shifflett Hensley. He retired from Dean’s Tree Service and was a member of
the Shenandoah Moose Lodge. Survivors include his companion, Lena P. Shifflett
of Elkton; a son, James C. Hensley Jr. of Shenandoah; two daughters, Teresa
Hensley of Elkton and Susan Fay McInerney of Shenandoah; seven grandchildren; 11

Jeddie Huffman Hensley Sr., 83, of Elkton, left this Earth to be with his Lord
and Savior on Aug. 20, 2019, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He
fought a courageous battle with cancer beginning in February 2019. Jeddie loved
life, his children, making people laugh, genealogy, antiques and his lifelong
joy of painting and crafting works of art. He was well known in the Valley for
his artwork, which he started in the fifth grade. A special love was his 1932
Chevrolet, which he showed with pride at car shows and cruise-ins. At 15 years
old, Jeddie joined the Elkton Fire Company and was a life member. He was in the
first group of EMT classes in Rockingham County and helped form the Elkton
Emergency Squad. He owned and operated Hensley's Sign Service for 42 years. He
held various jobs, working with his father and grandfather in construction,
Elkton Gulf Station, Huffman's Esso, Gordon's Potato Chips, Brill Funeral Home
and was a safety and security officer at Merck and Company for 22 years. He was
a certified Bob Ross instructor and enjoyed teaching others the "Joy of
Painting." Jeddie was a member of the Shenandoah Lions Club, the AACA Club,
Elkton Jr. O.U.A.M. and Trinity United Methodist Church, where he held numerous
offices. Jeddie was born May 6, 1936, in Rockingham County and was a son of the
late Wilson O. and Duane Hensley. He is survived by his three children:
daughter, Sharon Packett and husband, Michael, of Harrisonburg; sons, Jeddie
Hensley Jr. and wife, Linda, of Grottoes, and Ronnie S. Hensley and wife, Kathy,
and her son, Mitch Taylor, of Elkton; sisters, Wilsene Scott of Penn Laird and
Cynthia Ludholtz and husband, Bill, of Keezletown; brother, Jack Hensley and
wife, Peggy, of Shenandoah, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition, he was
blessed to have in his life his close friend and sweetheart of 24 years, Shelvy
Jenkins of Shenandoah; her daughter, Marsha Rinaca and husband, Ronnie, their
sons, Derek, Alex and her son, Tommy Jenkins and wife, Penny, and their
daughter, Taylor. During his time of need, Jeddie had five wonderful caregivers
who became "Jeddie's Angels." Shelby Hensley, Wendy Eppard, Rhonda Eppard, Dena
Lam and Misty Eppard. Pastors Rick Robertson and Kam Stabler will conduct the
funeral service at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019, at Elkton Evangelical United

Aged Farmer Had Many Friends—Funeral at McGaheysville Thursday
John Andrew Hensley, aged 80, well known farmer of East Rockingham, died at his
home near Harrisonburg yesterday afternoon after two weeks illness of pneumonia.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benton Hensley, he was born at Elkton in 1854 and
spent his entire life in East Rockingham. He was united in marriage with Miss
Victoria Shacklett. Well known throughout the eastern section of the county. He
has a host of friends who mourn his passing. He was a member of the United
Brethren Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by a number of children,
brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2
p. m from the McGaheysville Methodist Church with Rev. C. Long, conducting the
services. Interment will be in McGaheysville Cemetery.

Junior Lee Hensley, 91, of
McGaheysville, passed away Monday, April 17, 2023 at his home. He was born May
3, 1931 in Rockingham County, Virginia and was the son of the late Thomas Lee
and Fannie Gertrude Dean Hensley. On April 2, 1949 he married Ruby Yvonne
Shifflett Hensley, who preceded him in death on July 11, 2020. In addition to
his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Douglas O. Hensley,
Winston Hensley, Theodore Hensley, Dennis Hensley, Donnie Hensley, Wayne
Hensley; sister, Marlene Moubray and great-grandson, Justin Wilson. Junior loved
fishing, especially cat fishing. He was an avid wood worker using cherry and
walnut. He enjoyed coon hunting, gardening and farming, raising poultry and
cattle. He loved canning fruit and vegetables, especially pickles; dill and
sweet. He enjoyed family gatherings especially time with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He attended Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Elkton. He
retired from Nielsen Construction as a Superintendent and 47 years of service.
He is survived by a son, Tommy Hensley and wife, Betty of Elkton; daughters,
Patricia Holleman and husband, Jack of New Market, Linda Harper and husband,
George of Timberville; brother, Earl Ray Hensley and wife, Betty of
McGaheysville; sisters, Carlene McAvoy and husband, Kelly of Harrisonburg, Peggy
Merica of Elkton; grandchildren, Kimberly Dean and husband, Matthew, Amy Wilson

Katie Frances Hensley, 54, went to be with Jesus from her home in Stanardsville
on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001. She was surrounded by family and friends who sang
songs and prayed prayers, thanking God for every memory they shared with her.
She is now in his loving arms and for that we are forever grateful. She was born
July 1, 1947, daughter of Gladys Shifflett Taylor and the late Brooksey Taylor.
She is survived by her mother, Gladys Taylor of Stanardsville; her husband of 30
years, Hollis M. "Tommy" Hensley of Stanardsville; a son, Travis Reed Hensley of
Stanardsville; two brothers, Archie Taylor and his wife, Janet, of Earlysville,
and Steve Taylor and his wife, Susie, of Stanardsville; a sister, Faye Lawson
and her husband, Gilmer, of Stanardsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Taylor.
She was a trusted wife, loving mother, cherished sister, sweetest aunt, devoted
Christian, and wonderful friend who leaves us precious memories. She changed
lives and touched many hearts, and we will love her always. A funeral service
will be held at 12 noon Monday at First Bible Baptist Church, with interment in
Evergreen Cemetery. Pastor James Woods will officiate. The family will receive

Leo David Hensley, 83, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at the home of
his brother, Teddy Hensley, in Penn Laird. Mr. Hensley was born Nov. 15, 1924,
in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Teddy R. and Lottie Ellen
Sampson Hensley. He was a member of Full Gospel Lighthouse Tabernacle in Elkton,
where he was a Deacon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the
Pacific Theatre with the 503rd Parachute Regiment and later the 11th Infantry
Division in occupied Japan. He was a carpenter by trade and retired from Nielsen
Construction Company in Harrisonburg. He was preceded in death by his wives,
Agnes Lam Hensley on March 4, 1976, and Lillian Virginia Leake Hensley on Jan.
7, 2003. Survivors include four sons, Dennis, Donald, Robert and Noland Hensley,
all of Elkton; two daughters, Merry Merica of Elkton and Sylvia Hensley of
Harrisonburg; three stepdaughters, Betty Atkins of Elkton, Mary Crislip of
Harrisonburg and Karen Fink of Bridgewater; two brothers, Teddy R. Hensley of

Leo Hensley, 66, of Elkton died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at home. He had been ill
for the past 15 years. Mr. Hensley was born Aug. 29, 1933, at Swift Run and was
a son of the late Albert and Blanche Shifflett Hensley. He was a member of Mount
Olivet Christian Church where he had served as superintendent, and on the church
council, Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. He was a member of
Carpenter’s Local Union 388 of Richmond. He served in the Army two years. On
Aug. 22, 1953, he married Betty Jean Meadows, who survives. In addition to his
wife, survivors include a son, Gregory Hensley of Shenandoah; a daughter, Tamara
Harris of Elkton; three brothers, Oliver Hensley and Carroll Hensley, both of
Elkton, and Gary Hensley of West Virginia; two sisters, Pauline Comer of
McGaheysville and Shirley Kyger of Shenandoah; two half brothers and two half
sisters, whose names were not released to the funeral home; and four
grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2, by the Rev. Wayne

Leon H. Hensley, 91, of Elkton, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hensley was born Jan. 24, 1915, in
McGaheysville, and was the son of the late Gilbert Daniel and Josie Phene Eppard
Hensley. He was a member of East Point United Methodist Church near Elkton,
where he served as superintendent of the Sunday school and church treasurer for
a number of years. Mr. Hensley was a former member of the Elkton Ruritan Club
and the Senior Citizens Group at Cross Keys. He served in the Marine Corps and
retired from Merck and Company in 1980 after 34 years of employment. Survivors
include his wife of 69 years, Eula Shifflett Hensley; three sons, Ronald L.
Hensley and Greg D. Hensley, both of Elkton, and Roy Lee Hensley of Shenandoah;
two daughters, Doris Ann Comer of Shenandoah and S. Kay Shifflett of Elkton; six

Linda Gail (Hensley) Wibert passed away
peacefully on October 1, 2022, at University of Virginia Center for Acute
Hospice Care. She was born on May 27, 1952, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to
Norvin Clinton "Jack" Hensley Sr. and Nellie Virginia (Morris) Hensley. Linda
was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William O. "Bill" Hensley
and Charles E. "Charlie" Hensley. Linda leaves behind her beloved husband of 52
years, William "Bill" Wibert; a daughter, Patricia Gail Wibert and her partner,
Glenn Collins; and four grandchildren, Brandon Griffin, Isaiah Collins, Gabriel
Collins, and Ariana Collins. She is also survived by a brother, Norvin Clinton
"Junior" Hensley Jr. and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Hensley and Gloria Crockett.
Linda was employed with Alderman Library of University of Virginia for over 30
years where she was a very dedicated employee. She and Bill enjoyed watching her
favorite baseball team, the Washington Nationals, and also enjoyed watching
University of Virginia basketball. Linda enjoyed going to Charles Town to play
the slots when she could, and of course she loved having her grandchildren over
to visit on the weekends. They were her life, and she will be missed by them so
much. The family will announce details for a memorial service in celebration of
Linda's life at a later date.

Lora Maxine Hensley Shreckhise, 88, a resident of Weyers Cave, died Saturday,
June 9, 2018, at Bridgewater Retirement Village, where she lived the past year.
A daughter of the late Emmett and Florence Watson Hensley, she was born on March
9, 1930, in Elkton, Va. She graduated from Keezletown High School. Maxine held
various jobs during her lifetime and her favorite was working at Houff Transfer.
She was a devoted member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren and Weyers
Cave Ruritan Club, enjoying many of the activities at both. She was an avid
gardener and loved floral arranging and working in her flower beds. In March
1948, she married W. Fredrick Shreckhise, who preceded her in death on May 24,
2002. Surviving are her daughter, Susan Slater and husband, Rick, of
Harrisonburg; two sons, Steve Shreckhise and wife, Janet Muller Shreckhise, of
Weyers Cave, and Mike Shreckhise and his wife, Susie Borden Shreckhise, of New
Hope; grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Joseph, Jacob, Julie and Annie Shreckhise,
Ryan Cave, Karla Rutten, Zachary and Matthew Slater; five great-grandchildren;
and one brother, Mensel Hensley, and sister-in-law, Sandy Hensley. Maxine was
preceded in death by brothers, Lonnie, Otis, Sherley, Norman, Kenneth, Larry and

Bridgewater, and was a daughter of the late Jesse Forrest and Beulah Helms
Caricofe. She was a seamstress at Metro Pants and did volunteer work at the
Bridgewater Home. Her husband, Dallas Hensley, preceded her in death in 2002.

Lucius Garland Hensley, 82, of Elkton, died July 18, 2006, at the Harrisonburg
Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Hensley was born May 4, 1924, in Elkton,
Va., son of the late Jesse G. and Katherine Shaw Hensley. He graduated from
Elkton High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy and was a WWII
veteran. Mr. Hensley was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, a
member the VFW Post 9292 and the Jr. Order of United American Mechanics No. 149,
both in Elkton. He operated Hensley’s Texaco along with his brother, John, and
later Hensley’s Service Center. Mr. Hensley was retired from the Rockingham
Mutual Insurance Co. and from real estate. On July 3, 1947, he married the
former Marian Pence, who survives. He is also survived by one son, L. Wayne
Hensley and wife, Teresa; one daughter, Ellen Hensley Martin and husband,
Douglas; seven grandchildren, L.W. Hensley II and his wife, Karen, Jennifer

Lucius Shacklette Hensley, 77, of McGaheysville, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004,
at his home. Mr. Hensley was born April 4, 1927, in Rockingham County, and was a
son of the late Henry Walter and Nellie V. Dean Hensley. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy and retired from C&W Railroad in 1987 as a section foreman. He was
also a farmer and a member of Brown Memorial Community Church in McGaheysville
and Gooden Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9292 in Elkton. On Aug. 6,
1977, he married Joann E. Frazier, who survives. He is also survived by a son,
Jody Frazier Hensley of McGaheysville; a brother, Curtis Hensley of Elkton;
three sisters, Jewell Knight and Shirley Shifflett, both of McGaheysville and
Geraldine Kite of Harrisonburg and a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. Dale
Barrington will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Olivet
Cemetery in McGaheysville with military honors by the VFW Post 9292. Friends may

Marian Pence Hensley, 79, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at her home.
Marian was born July 24, 1929, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the
late Bernard W. and Grace Mowbray Pence. She was also preceded in death by her
older brother, B. Arnold Pence. Her working career consisted of operating
Hensley’s Service Center with her husband. She also worked for Haden’s Furniture
Store and Dean Lumber Company, and for 18 years was secretary for her son Wayne
at Hensley’s Insurance Agency, all in Elkton. She was a long time member of the
Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton. For the past two years she
volunteered at E.A.U.S. On July 3, 1947, she married Lucius G. Hensley, her
husband of 59 years, who preceded her in death July 18, 2006. She is survived by
one son, L. Wayne Hensley and wife, Teresa of Elkton; one daughter, Ellen
Hensley Martin and husband, P. Douglas of Luray; two brothers, James Pence of
Bridgewater, Gary W. Pence of Manassas; seven grandchildren, L.W. Hensley II and
wife, Karen, Jennifer Martin Puffinburger and husband, Brian, Martha Hensley,

Dec. 8, 2006, at Sunnyside Retirement Community. Marjorie was born Sept. 15,
1923, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Giles and Leila
Naylor Hensley. Marjorie was an active member of the Elkton Seventh-day
Adventist Church, a devoted wife and mother and a "special granny." She
volunteered at the Grottoes Salvation Army. Austin F. Seal, her husband of 60
years, survives. She is also survived by four daughters, Karen Morris and
husband, Bill, of Elkton, Paulette Housh and husband, Chester, of Waynesboro,
Sandra Seal, Austine Roudabush and husband, John, all of Mount Solon; one
sister, Jean Weakley of N. Springfield; seven grandchildren, Stephen Morris of
N.C., Scott Morris of Elkton, Cassie McFarland of Ill., Stephanie Meadows of
Elkton, Crystal Kollmorgen of Conn., Cybil Housh of Pa. and Benji Huddle of
Mount Solon; 11 great-grandchildren, Aaron and Trevor Morris, Dylan and Alora

Mary Elizabeth Haney Hensley, 92, of Gordonsville, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002,

She was married to the late Whitelow Eugene "W.E." Hensley and was a member of

Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Saturday. She

Vernon and Kitty Florence Baugher Hensley. She was a member of Blue Ridge
Independent Church. Her husband, Edgar Hensley, died April 30, 1966. Surviving

Melissa Ann Judd Hensley, 47, of Luray, Virginia, died Sunday, September 2, 2018
in Page County. Melissa was born on Dec. 31, 1970, in Harrisonburg, VA and was a
daughter of Barbara Ann Griffith Shenk of Luray and the late David Franklin
Judd. Mrs. Hensley graduated from Luray High School Class of 1988 and had served
as head cheer coach. She retired from Partners First as branch manager, with 11
years of service. She was a former member of the Luray Midget League and past
member of the Luray Rotary Club and the Luray/Page County Chamber of Commerce.
On April 19, 2014 in Rockingham County, VA, she married Randall Earl Hensley,
who also died September 2, 2018. Surviving in addition to her mother are a son,
David Seal of Luray; a daughter, Nicole Ruffner of Luray; a sister, Victoria A.
Judd of Luray; her stepfather, Wayne Wright of Luray; three stepdaughters,
Brittany Shifflett and Brooklyn Gum, both of Shenandoah, and Tasha Seal of
Luray; and four step grandchildren. She was previously married to Thomas Wayne
Seal and William Joseph Ruffner. The family will receive friends at Bradley
Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, from 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at
East Rockingham High School Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Burial

Norma Jane "Skeeter" Hensley, 70, of McGaheysville, departed this life to be
with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 29, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs.
Hensley was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late
Norman and Catherine Thacker. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Claud
R. Dean Sr. and Rome Hensley Jr., and a sister, Elsie Armentrout. Norma had
previously worked at Transprints USA in Harrisonburg and retired in 1997 due to
declining health. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren,
her flowers, dancing, and had a great love for life. Norma fought many brave
battles against her illnesses and was an inspiration to all those who knew her.
Survivors include two sons, Claud "Robby" Dean Jr. and wife, Londia, of Elkton,
and Tony Allen Dean and friend, Michele, of Mount Jackson; three daughters,
Susan Michelle Rion and husband, Greg, of Elkton, Belinda Dean Sites and
husband, Gary, of McGaheysville and Rhonda Lynn Gooden and husband, Robert, of

Norvin Clinton "Jack" Hensley, 86, of Charlottesville, died Saturday, Nov. 25,
2000, in a local hospital. Born May 25, 1914, in Albemarle County, he was the
son of the late Joseph M. Hensley and Louise Marshall Hensley. He was the
husband of the late Nellie Virginia Hensley, for 61 years. Mr. Hensley retired
from livestock trading and the Blue Ridge Sanatorium. Surviving are his three

wife, Carolyn, of Bowie, Md., and Charles Edward Hensley and his wife, Gloria,

Oliver Hensley, 74, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Hensley was born April 1, 1935, in Rockingham County and was the son of the
late Albert T. and Blanch Shifflett Hensley. Oliver was a U.S. Army veteran of
the Korean War, where he served as medic. He was also a carpenter by trade and a
member of the Local Carpenters Union No. 388 of Richmond. On Oct. 28, 1954, he
married Charlotte Lee Morris Hensley, who preceded him in death Aug. 12, 2009.
Survivors include four sons, Steven L. Hensley and companion, Jane, Kenneth
(Kenny) R. Hensley and wife Jackie, Roger D. Hensley and wife Sherry, and Roy A.
Hensley, all of Elkton; three brothers, Carroll E. Hensley and Gary Lee Hensley,

Othel "Clegg" Hensley, 88, of Elkton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr.
Hensley was born April 21, 1924, in Rockingham County near Elkton to the late Worthy D. and Vada Eppard
Hensley. Clegg attended the Fox Mountain School. He had previously worked for Dean Lumber Co., RanMar, and
retired from B. K. Haynes. He was a heavy equipment operator and enjoyed working on the sawmill, farming,
horses, mules, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his family very much and taking rides with his wife. On
Jan. 21, 1944, he married Gladys Mary "Pearl" Shifflett Hensley, who preceded him in death April 10, 2010. He

Patricia Ann Hensley, 80, of Elkton, went to be
with the Lord Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Brookdale Senior Living in
Harrisonburg. She was born Jan. 5, 1939, in Rockingham County and was the
daughter of the late Melvin and Edith Hammer Hensley. In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lucian "Dick" Hensley, who
passed away Jan. 23, 1994; three sisters; and a brother. Pat graduated from
Montevideo High School. She retired from Genie/Alliance, where she was employed
for over 40 years as an assembler. She enjoyed sewing and making clothes. She
was a member of Church of Faith in Shenandoah. She is survived by numerous
nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family and friends. The family will receive

ELKTON — Rachel Mae Hensley, 19, of Route 3, Elkton died Wednesday morning at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She was born May 13, 1910, in Rockingham County
and was a daughter of the late Thomas Lindsey and Josephine Shifflett Dean. She
lived most of her life in Elkton and was a member of the United Methodist
Church. Her husband, Jacob Ralph Hensley, died in 1977. Surviving are three
children, Olivia Samuels, Elsie Shifflett and Alvin Hensley, all of Route 3,
Elkton; a sister, Gracie Branham of Earlysville; five grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Elkton

Ralph Delmar Hensley Sr., 65, Mount Crawford, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hensley was born May 14, 1936,
in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Ralph Howard and Verida
Williams Hensley. He owned and operated his own construction company for the
past 25 years and was employed at Dupont for 17 years, retiring due to poor
health. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his
wife, Barbara Hutchens Hensley, whom he married Nov. 13, 1954; five sons, Ralph
D. Hensley Jr., Elkton, Mike A. Hensley, Allen L. Hensley, and Carl W. Hensley,
all of Mount Crawford, and Dwayne C. Hensley, Harrisonburg; two sisters, Emogene
Dovel of Hardy, and Bernice Good, Bridgewater; seven grandchildren; and one

Randall Earl Hensley, 46, of Luray, formerly of Elkton, Va., passed away Sunday,
Sept. 2, 2018. He was born April 24, 1972, in Harrisonburg and was a son of
Lawrence Earl and Shelby Jean Shifflett Hensley of Elkton. Randall graduated
from Spotswood High School. He was employed in law enforcement for a total of 24
years with Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Grottoes Police Department and
was currently employed with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. He was active
with the SWAT team, search and rescue team, dive team, and was a field training
officer. He was the vice president of the Gunfighters MC, Battlefield Chapter, a
member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge No. 2176, and the Fraternal Order of the
Eagles No. 4264 in New Market. Randall had many pastimes that he enjoyed
including fishing, hunting and shooting guns. He will forever be remembered as a
dedicated father and paw-paw and greatly missed by all that knew him. His wife,
Melissa “Missy” Ann (Judd) Hensley, passed away by his side on Sept. 2, 2018. In
addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughters, Brooklyn Gum and
husband, Austin, and Brittany Shifflett and companion, Jesse Sampson, all of
Shenandoah; stepson, David Seal; stepdaughter, Nicole Ruffner; sister, Cindy

Ray Nelson Hensley, 62, 698 McGahey Lane, McGaheysville, died Dec. 8, 2002, at
his home. Mr. Hensley was born June 29, 1940, in Harrisonburg and was a son of
the late Cleatus "Jack" Orva and Mae "Mick" Authella Thomas Hensley. He lived
the majority of his life in the McGaheysville community. He graduated from
Montevideo High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a maintenance
supervisor for North Anna Nuclear Power Station prior to his retirement in 1999.
Mr. Hensley was a charter member of the McGaheysville Fire Co., a member of Oak
Hill Council No. 83, and J.O.U.A.M. He served as a scoutmaster for 13 years and
was a volunteer van driver for the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a
member of the Elkton Evangelical Presbyterian Church. On April 2, 1976, he
married Naomi J. "Janie" Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are two sons,
Ray N. Hensley Jr. of Shenandoah and Joseph Lee Hensley of McGaheysville; a
daughter, Jackie Mae Hensley of McGaheysville; a brother, John S. Hensley of
McGaheysville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The Revs. Jim Martin and
Robert Buchanan will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral

Roger Dale Hensley, 52, of Elkton, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, in Page
County. He was born Sept. 6, 1964, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of the late

preceded in death by a brother, Roy Hensley. Roger enjoyed shooting pool,

Rome Benjamin Hensley, 61, a McGaheysville farmer and trucker, died Thursday at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hensley had been in falling health four years
and became seriously ill Tuesday. He was born Oct. 1, 1886 near Elkton and was a
son of the late John and Fannie Lam Hensley. He was married twice. His first
wife, the former Minnie F. Lam, died Feb. 10, 1950. On June 24. 1964 he married
the former Anna Lawson, who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by four
daughters. Mrs. Joseph Frazier of Rt. 1, Elkton, Mrs. Wilson Frazier and Mr.
Charles P. Lawson, both of Rt. 2, Elkton, Mrs. Charles Kyger of Dayton and Miss
Dolly Ann Hensley, at home; a son, Rome Junior Hensley of McGaheysville: a
step-daughter, Mrs. Margaret Todd of McGaheysville; 12 grandchildren; 11

MCGAHEYSVILLE — Rome Benjamin Hensley Jr., 55, of McGaheysville died Friday at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday.
The cause of death was not available Friday night. Mr. Hensley was a farmer and
a truck driver for Dayton Transport and had worked for S. A. Morris Paving two
years. He was born June 19, 1928, and was the son of the late Rome B. and Minnie
Lam Hensley. He served with the Army during World War II and he was a member of
Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292 and Mount Olivet United Church of Christ near
McGaheysville. On Sept. 25, 1976, he married the former Norma Jane Thacker, who
survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Kitty Grubbs and Rosemary Hensley,
both of McGaheysville; three stepdaughters, Susan Rion of Rt. 2, Elkton, Belinda
Sites of Harrisonburg and Rhonda Dean, at home; two step-sons, Tony and Robbie

Rondel "Ron" Delmar Hensley of Massanutten, Va., passed away at his home on

Dean Hensley. He attended William Byrd High School in Roanoke, Va., and received

Ronald Leon Hensley, 74, of Elkton, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at his
home. Mr. Hensley was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Rockingham County, and was a son of
the late Leon H. and Eula Shifflett Hensley. After graduating from Elkton High
School in 1956, Ron joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He attended Madison College
and worked at Westinghouse in Verona. In 1993, he retired from Merck & Co. after
19 years as an operator and first-line supervisor. Since his retirement, he has
enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and sharing the results of his efforts
with family and friends. He loved fishing on Lake Anna and listening to
bluegrass music. Ron is survived by Patricia Willson Hensley, his wife of 48
years. Also surviving are his sisters, Doris Ann Comer of Shenandoah and Sandra
Kay Shifflett of Elkton; and his brothers, Roy Lee Hensley of Shenandoah and
Gregory D. Hensley of Elkton. Last, but not least, he is survived by his best

Roy Lee Hensley, 80, of Shenandoah, died on Thursday, October 24, 2019, at
Journey's Crossing Assisted Living in Elkton, where he has resided since early
2016. He was born November 2, 1938, in Rockingham County and was the son of the
late Leon and Eula (Shifflett) Hensley. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his brother, Ron Hensley and brother-in-law, Gary M.
Shifflett. He is survived by his one daughter, Lori Atkins and husband, Shane;
two grandsons, Brandon Hensley and friend, Meagan Armentrout and Bryston Atkins;
one great-granddaughter, Abby Grace Hensley; two sisters, Ann Comer and husband,
Jerry of Shenandoah, S. Kay Shifflett of Elkton; brother, Greg Hensley and wife,
Lois of Elkton; sister-in-law, Pat Hensley of Elkton and a number of cousins,
nephews and nieces. Roy graduated from Elkton High School in 1957. He served in
the Army for two years and the Reserves for a couple of years afterwards. He
worked for Monger Coal and Oil for years and then retired from Merck Corporation
in 1999 as a pipefitter/rigger after 29 years of service. He was a member of
East Point United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature,
fishing and playing tennis. He also enjoyed playing cards, ping-pong and board
games. He loved his easy rock music and had a wonderful sense of humor and wit
about him in telling stories and jokes that made everyone laugh and smile. He
was a very loving, caring and FUN father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law,
uncle, friend and neighbor to so many. A memorial service will be conducted at 2
p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastors
Kam Stabler and Rick Robertson officiating. A private burial will be held at a
later date at Elk Run Cemetery.

a carpenter for many years and enjoyed riding horses and camping. He is survived

Sallie Branham Hensley, 82, of Orange died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, in the
University of Virginia Hospital. Born Aug. 19, 1919, in Orange County, she was
the daughter of the late Samuel Burton Branham and Mary Estelle Wood Branham and
wife of the late Benjamin Harrison Hensley Jr. She was also preceded in death by
a granddaughter, Anita Karen Hutchinson. Mrs. Hensley was an employee of the
American Silk Mill and retired from Doubleday Publishing Company in Orange. She
was a member of the Zion Baptist Church at Madison Run. She is survived by a
son, Kelly Lee Hensley of Charlottesville; a brother, William Branham of
Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Margaret Breeden and Maxine McDaniel, both of
Orange; fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral service
will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange
with interment in Graham Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6
p.m. this evening at the funeral home. After the funeral service Tuesday, the
family will receive friends at the Heritage Hall, 235 Spicers Mill Rd.

Sallie Burnley Hensley, 80, of Stanardsville, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at
Evergreen Nursing Home in Stanardsville. Born June 22, 1921, in Shipman, she was
the daughter of the late Aron Critzer and Ruth Ann Wills Critzer. She was the
wife of the late George Claude Hensley. She was also preceded in death by her
first husband, Harry Mitchell Burnley, a son, John V. Grizzard, four sisters,
and a brother. Mrs. Hensley was a housekeeper in private homes and enjoyed
sewing, visiting people, and "soap operas" on television. Survivors include her
children, Hazel B. Morris of Quinque, James H. Burnley of Ruckersville, Russell
F. Burnley of Charlottesville, Barbara A. Canellas of Port Deposit, Md., Carolyn
Hill of Williamsburg, Jane Murphy of Petersburg, Brenda Grizzard of Branchville,
and Margaret Proffit of Charlottesville; 10 grandchildren; and a number of
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church
at Alberene Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeff Cale officiating. Interment will follow
in the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hill

Mrs. Hensley, 94, Passes Away
Mrs. Sarah Catherine Hensley, 94, widow of Charles Brown Hensley, and a resident
of Elkton, Penn Laird and Keezletown for a number of years, died at 10:30 last
night at the Henton Nursing Home on South Main St., after an extended illness.
Mrs. Hensley had been an invalid for the past seven years and had been a patient
at several nursing homes. Her condition became serious three months ago and
little hope had been held for her recovery in recent weeks. A daughter of George
Baugher and Verenda Jane Maiden Baugher, she was born Aug. 18, 1859, in the
Swift Run community near Elkton. On Jan. 2, 1877, she married Charles Brown
Hensley. Mr. Hensley a well known Rockingham County farmer preceded her in death
Sept. 21, 1938. Mrs. Hensley resided in the Elkton, Penn Laird and Keezletown
communities for a number of years and was well known and loved in each
community. She had been making her home with her children until several months
ago when she entered the nursing home. She is survived by six children: Warren
A. (Pet) Hensley, of Elkton; Joseph D. Hensley, of McGaheysville; Charles
Lawrence (Larry) Hensley, of Pinehurst, N. C; Mrs. Arch (Lucy) Lawson, of
Washington; Russell W. Hensley, of Sanford, N. C, and Mrs. Claude (Beatrice)
Armentrout, of Linville. She also leaves a number of grandchildren, great
grandchildren and great great grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. W. T. (Ella) Monger,
of Elkton, and two brothers, Scott Baugher, of Penn Laird, and Benjamin Baugher,
of Marion, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Five children, Mrs.
Sally Edna Eppard, Georgie Benjamin Hensley, David Wilmer Hensley, Leroy Emmett
Hensley and Miss Mettle Mozell Hensley preceded her in death. Mrs. Hensley
possessed a kind and pleasant personality and had a host of friends. She was a
former member of the Swift Run United Brethren Church and was a charter member
of the Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren at Pineville. Definite funeral
arrangements had not been completed early this morning, but the funeral services
will probably be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the chapel of the Lindsey
funeral home in Harrisonburg. Burial will be in the family lot in the Keezletown
cemetery. As the Daily News-Record will not publish on Monday (a holiday)
friends are asked to call the members of the family or the Lindsey funeral home
for the final arrangements.

Mrs. Hensley’s Funeral Held
Final rites for Mrs. Sarah Catherine Hensley, widow of Charles Brown Hensley,
who died Friday evening at the Sun Haven Nursing Home were held Monday afternoon
from the chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home here. The Rev. Walstein. W. Snyder
was in charge of the services, assisted by the Rev. John P. Locke and interment
was in the Keezletown Cemetery. Mrs. Hensley's wide acquaintance and her loyalty
to her friends was evidenced by the many relatives and friends who gathered to
pay their final respects and the beautiful floral designs. A daughter of the
late George Baugher and Mrs. Virenda Jane Maiden Baugher, she was born on Aug.
18, 1859, In the Swift Run community. Residing in the Elkton, Penn Laird, and
Keezletown communities, Mrs. Hensley had in recent years been making her home
with her children. For the past several months, she had been a patient at
various nursing homes. Active pallbearers, who were grandsons, were: Fred
Eppard, Leroy Hensley, George Eppard, Claxton Lawson, Curtis Hensley, Conrad
Hensley, Ray Hensley, and Whit Berry. Those attending the services from a
distance included: Mr. and Mrs. Maynard A. Sweet, and I. Leighton Frye, all of
Washington, and Elva Armentrout, of San Francisco.

Mrs. Sara Helen Beasley Hensley, 61, of 526 Georgetown Road, died Friday, March
22, 1974 in a local hospital. Born in Greene County she was the daughter of the
late Jerry and Roberta Williams Beasley, and the step-daughter of the late
Rebecca Collier Beasley. Mrs. Hensley is survived by four sons, Clarence W.
Hensley of Herndon, Roy A. and Curtis R. Hensley of Barboursville, and Harry M.
Beasley of Orange; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Barnett and Maud M. Lloyd of
Charlottesville; two brothers, George Beasley of Stanardsville and Elwood
Beasley of Barboursville; seven sisters, Mrs. Geneva Wood of Charlottesville,
Mrs. Caroline Gibson, Mrs. Ollie Shifflett and Mrs. Clara Lamb of Barboursville,
Mrs. Katie Shifflett and Mrs. Ann Dowell of Mineral, and Mrs. Minnie Conley of
Orange; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were
held Monday 2 p.m. at Hill and Irving Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in

Selena Hensley Fravel of Elkton, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Harrisonburg
Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a resident for two days.
Mrs. Fravel was born March 19, 1916, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of
the late Edgar A. and Mary Hensley. She was a housekeeping supervisor at Holiday
Inn and Belle Meade Red Carpet Inn and was last employed at Dean Steel Erectors.
She was a member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church, the Daughters of the American
Revolution and the Senior Citizens. Her husband, Vyven A. Fravel, preceded her
in death on July 27, 1992. She is survived by a daughter, Clarine Hudgins of
Callao; three sons, E. Charles Dean Sr., Elkton, the Rev. Kemper Dean,
Waynesboro, and Willie Dean, Harrisonburg; a brother, Eugene Hensley, Elkton;
four sisters, Mildred McDaniel, Elizabeth Hensley, and Alice McAllister, all of
Elkton and Pauline Hensley, Harrisonburg; 14 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Kinzy Reed will
conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. today at the Elkton Pentecostal Church. Burial

Shirley Ann Kyger, 63, of Shenandoah, died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Kyger was born June 30, 1939, in
Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Albert and Blanche Shifflett
Hensley. She was a homemaker and a member of the Episcopal Church. Her husband,
Lee Austin Kyger, preceded her in death May 10, 1987. She is survived by a son,
Gary Hensley of Mathias, W.Va.; three brothers, Oliver Hensley and Carroll
Hensley, both of Elkton, and Marion Hensley of Alexandria; two sisters, Alvani
Hensley of Alexandria and Pauline Comer of Shenandoah; two grandchildren; one
stepgrandchild and three great-grandchildren. The Rev. Hudson Nuckols will

Thelma Hensley Lamb, 70, of Gordonsville, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in Front
Royal. Born May 7, 1932, in Barboursville, she was a daughter of the late Eugene
Hensley and Mary Elizabeth Haney Hensley. She was the wife of the late Dewey
William Lamb. Mrs. Lamb was a member of the Gordonsville United Methodist Church
and the Gordonsville V.F.W. Post 7638 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a
daughter, Robin Lamb Stubbs and her husband, Stephen, of Somerset; one son,
Dewey Eugene "Danny" Lamb and his wife, Brenda, of Gordonsville; two brothers,
Maynard Hensley of Gordonsville, and Garvin "Tim" Hensley of Orange; four
sisters, Margie Hamilton of Gordonsville, Doris Peyton of Gordonsville, Shirley

VARA ADELINE HENSLEY MERICA
Vara Adeline Merica, age 91, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Elkton, passed away
on April 3, 2014. She was the eldest child, born on April 10, 1922, to the late
Lester and Mattie Morris Hensley. Vara was the last surviving sibling of three
brothers, Oral Hensley, Lester Hensley Jr. and Darold Hensley, as well as a
sister, Darlene Hensley Dean. Vara was a devout Christian and a wonderful and
loved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and
neighbor. She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Clarence Merica, in 1986.
Vara was an extraordinary person who genuinely cared about everyone and those
who met her came away with a smile. She was and is well loved by her family and
friends and will be remembered fondly always. Vara was raised near Elkton and
graduated from Elkton High School. She, along with her husband, relocated to
Springfield, where they resided for many years. Surviving are her son, William
“Bill” Merica and wife, Jin, of New Bern, N.C.; her grandson, Stephen Merica and
wife, Lauren, of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Liam and Savannah
Merica and several nieces and nephews. The Rev. David Vaughan will conduct the
funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Evangelical United

ELKTON — A funeral service for Vernon W. Hensley, 32, of Rt. 1, Elkton, was

was fatally injured in a two-Car crash east of Harrisonburg Friday evening, on

Veredia Frances Hensley, 84, of McGaheysville died July 6, 1994, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg after a brief illness. Mrs. Hensley was born
Feb. 4, 1910, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late Willie and
Lydia Ann Shifflett Williams. She lived her entire life in Rockingham County and
was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly Church. On April 13, 1929, she married
the Rev. Ralph Howard Hensley, who died Jan. 2, 1994. Surviving are two
daughters, Emma Jean Dovel of Hardy and Bernice Good of Harrisonburg one son,
Ralph Delmar Hensley of Mount Crawford; one sister, Pearl Prather of
Martinsburg, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great. grandchildren. The Revs.

VIOLET IRENE DAVIS HENSLEY
Violet Irene Davis Hensley entered the loving embrace of her Savior on June 27,
2020, following several years of declining health. Born on Feb. 27, 1934, to
Otis L. and Helen M. Davis, Violet lived her entire life in Elkton. She relished
small town life and could not imagine living anywhere else. In 1954, she married
Ellery A. Hensley, who died on April 20, 1977. In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn L. Morris and Goldie M. Helsley,
and their spouses, Leon and Noah, respectively. Violet worked at Rockingham
Sleepwear, Elkton Garment Co., and in semi-retirement as a product demonstrator
at Costco. An avid cook, she was happiest in her kitchen which she considered
hallowed ground. Violet is survived by her son, Ellery A. Hensley Jr. and
partner, Scott; brother, Donald L. Davis and wife, Violet; and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. No celebration of Violet's life would be complete without a
heartfelt expression of appreciation to her caregivers, Sarah Sarver, Karen
Wimer, and Myra Crawford, whose loving care brought immeasurable comfort to her
final year of life; and to Alice Lam, whose decades of kindness and support are
a testament to true friendship. Pastor Curtis Crawford will conduct a graveside
service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in
McGaheysville. In deference to current health concerns, attendees are encouraged

Violet Lorraine Hanger Hensley, 79, of Elkton, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at
her home. Mrs. Hensley was born Nov. 11, 1926 in Rockingham County and was the
daughter of the late rank Bismark and Laura Virginia Fadley Hanger. She was a
graduate of Dayton High School and a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist
Church. She had worked at Leggett Department Store in Harrisonburg and Blue Bell
Inc., in Shenandoah before retiring. On Dec. 25, 1948, she married Orson R.
Hensley; he survives. Also surviving are a son, Carson Hensley of Elkton; two
daughters, Diana Cooper of Fulks Run and Loretta Grunewald of Shenandoah; a
brother, Arthur Hanger of Harrisonburg, and a sister, Charlene Hunley of
Harrisonburg. The Revs. Shirley Mercer and Don Guthrie will conduct the funeral

Waverly Price Hensley, 77, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2005, at
Heritage Hall. Born in Elkton, Va., he was the son of the late Russell Hensley
and Bertie Salina Hensley. Mr. Hensley is survived by his loving wife, Jean; two
daughters, Lorie Spencer, of Charlottesville, Va., and Susan Noble, of Clark,
Va.; one son, Greg Hensley, and his wife, Wanda, of Albemarle County, Va.; two
brothers, Russell Hensley, and his wife, Nancy, of Charlottesville, Va., and

WELTY HINKLE HENSLEY
Welty Hinkle Hensley, 82, of Elkton, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at
Evergreene Nursing Care Center in Stanardsville, Va., of complications from
diabetes and congestive heart failure. Born June 6, 1925, in Penn Laird, Va., he
was the son of the late Howard Samuel and Nellie Hinkle Hensley. He graduated
from Elkton High School and attended Bridgewater College. In August of 1944,
Welty joined the Navy and worked as a flight simulator instructor during World
War II. He achieved the rank of Seaman First Class. After leaving the Navy he
worked with his father at Hensley Sales and Service, a Chevrolet dealership in
Elkton. He was the Mayor of Elkton from 1966 to 1970. In 1975, Welty opened
Spotswood Realty. Welty was instrumental in helping form the Rockingham League
of Towns, was on the Board of Directors in 1963 for the 50th Elkton Golden
Jubilee Celebration, served as President of the 75th Elkton Diamond Jubilee
Celebration, served as President of the Elkton Historical Society, and was
instrumental in the renovation of the historic Miller-Kite House. Welty was
Chairman of the Elkton Horse Show and helped organize the event for 20 years. He
was a member of the Crime Solvers of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and
served on the Board of Directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank of Timberville
Inc. for 22 years. He was past President of the Lions Club and past Commander of
the American Legion Post 222. He loved Elkton and was a member of Elkton Area
United Services, as well as being the author of A History of Elkton in 2004.
Welty was a long-time member of Elkton United Methodist Church. An active
supporter, he was a past member of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the
Administrative Council, and coordinated the major 1960s renovation of the
historical church. He also belonged to the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge, Elkton
Masonic Lodge No. 74 A.F.&A.M., and ACCA Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Richmond. In
July of 2007, Welty and Alice celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He is
survived by his wife, Alice Mae Rion; son, Winston Kern Hensley and wife, Carol;
two granddaughters, Amy Allen and husband, Charles, of Crofton, Md., and Joy
George and husband, Stuart, of Buena Vista, Va.; two great-grandsons, John
Joseph Allen and Alexander Kai George. Welty lived a very happy, proud, and full
life. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. His loved
ones are rejoicing that he is now in Heaven, celebrating with God in endless
peace, and that he is finally free of pain. We appreciate all your visits,
thoughts, and prayers during this sad, but blessed time. Friends and family will
be received at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton Saturday, Jan. 5, from 3 to 5 or
anytime at 406 N. Stuart Avenue in Elkton. A funeral service will be held at 2

William L. Hensley, Sr., known as "Bill" to many, departed this life on Friday, June 12, 2015, surrounded by
loved ones. Bill had complications from pneumonia and a heart attack. Bill was born September 22, 1933, to
William H. and Frances M. Hensley in Orange County, Virginia. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by
his wife, Ann Marie Garrison Hensley. Bill was a proud father of six children, Amanda Mills, Pamela Johnson,
Venna Wiest, Bill Hensley, Jr., Nena Brackett and Patricia Spradlin. He was also a grandfather and
great-grandfather to many. Two brothers and a sister also survive him. His children would like to thank the
staff and nurses at the Orange Dialysis Center and the doctors and staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for
their wonderful kindness and care giving shown to our dad. Bill wore many hats in his days, letter carrier for
the U.S. Postal Service, owner and operator of several small grocery stores, but his true passion in life was
antiques. His many bookshelves are filled with books about antiques and even at the age of 81, he would be
seen getting out of his car with his cane at a yard sale still hunting for treasures. Bill departs this life
with many, many treasured memories from his time spent at the Gordonsville Hardees. His children would like to
express their gratitude to all of the employees, friends and members of the "Hardees Breakfast Club". A
celebration of life will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the Preddy Funeral Home
Chapel in Gordonsville with a memorial service at 7:00 p.m.

WM FARREL HENSLEY
Wm. Farrel Hensley, 78, of McGaheysville, died Monday evening, December 11, 2006
at his home. Farrel was born on April 26, 1928 in Rockingham County, and was the
son of the late Reese and Lottie Sipe Hensley. He graduated Valedictorian of his
class of 1945 from McGaheysville High School and attended Randolph Macon College
of Richmond. He owned and operated his own tile business and set tile for over
55 years. Many of the area schools, hospitals, businesses and homes still have
tile Farrel set in them. He was known to be a quiet man with few words, but had
a strong drive to work hard. He loved to garden, grow fruit and flowers, feeding
and watching his wild birds and squirrels. He was a member of the Mt. Olivet
Christian Church. Surviving are his previous wives; Rosie Phillips Hensley of
Penn Laird and Ellen Life Hensley of McGaheysville. Also surviving are two
daughters; Jacklyn Hensley Skinner and husband, Eddie of Port Republic, Rosetta
Hensley Shifflett of Elkton, two stepdaughters; Donna Freedman and husband, Sam
of Richmond, Connie Martinez and husband, Tom of Richmond; a brother, Jack
Hensley, Harrisonburg; a sister, Phyllis Leap and husband, Tom, McGaheysville;
three grandchildren; Tim Skinner and wife, Tammy of Crozet, Roseanne Skinner of
Grottoes, Dansby Skinner of Port Republic, three step-grandchildren; Ginell
Davis of Charlottesville, Cheryl Fitzgerald of South Carolina, John Freedman of
West Point, two great-grandchildren; Tyler and Sara Skinner of Lacey Spring, one
step-great-grandson, Jonathan Dance of Crozet. Pastor Wayne Wright will conduct
the funeral service 2:00 p.m. Sunday December 17, 2006 at the Kyger Funeral Home
Chapel in Elkton. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in
McGaheysville. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, before
the funeral at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a local
charity of the donor’s choice. The casket will remain closed.
