Almeta Kyger Hensley, 91, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Oct. 18, 2018, in
Harrisonburg. Mrs. Hensley was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Martinsburg, W.Va., to the
late Leonard R. and Maggie Jane McDaniel Kyger. Mrs. Hensley enjoyed the fall
colors and summers at Lake Anna, where she loved to water ski and enjoyed
bowling. She was a member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church, where
she was a greeter and cooked and served meals for church functions. Her carrot
cake will be missed by many. She retired from Owens Brockway and Duplan. Her
husband, Floyd K. "Tiny" Hensley, preceded her in death. Besides her husband and
parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, James Kyger, Thelma Shifflett,
Austin Kyger, Sylvester Kyger and Mary Kirtley. Mrs. Hensley is survived by a
daughter, Linda Hamilton of Harrisonburg; sisters, Enda Cannonelle of Florida
and Gurnie Kyger of Harrisonburg; grandson, Kenneth Davis (Skip);
great-granddaughter, Kendra St. Clair (Lee); great-great-grandchildren, Max St.
Clair and Mason St. Clair; step-grandchildren, Darlene Wiseman (G.W.), Diane
Grant (Robin), Clyde Hamilton, Walter Hamilton and Mark Hamilton; special
step-great-grandchildren, Caitlin Grant, Jessica Grant and Matthew Grant; and
four step-great-grandchildren. Pastors Wayne Wright and Jim Wingert will conduct
the funeral service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at the Kyger Funeral
Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in

Arnold Freemont Kyger, 52, 1304 Country Club Court, Harrisonburg, died
Wednesday, September 29, 1999, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Kyger was
born July 18, 1947 in Rockingham County, and is a son of Edna Shifflett Kyger
and the late David Kyger. He graduated from Montevideo High School, and was
employed in the maintenance department at Motel 6, in Harrisonburg. Surviving in
addition to his mother are a companion, Liz Dean; twin-daughters, Ellen Kyger
and JoAnn Shifflet, both of McGaheysville; two sons, David Kyger, Fairfax, and
Cody Dean, Harrisonburg; six sisters, Edna Lee Mowbray and Lula Evelyn Kyger,
both of McGaheysville, Hilda Mae Lam, Odessa Harlow, Lethia Kyger, all of
Harrisonburg, and his twin, Ruth Alice Shifflett, Elkton; a brother, Chris
Kyger, Harrisonburg; two granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. The
Rev. Samuel Sponaugle will conduct the funeral at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the
Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery
in McGaheysville. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at

Christopher Columbus Kyger, 79, of Harrisonburg, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14,
2013, at his home. Mr. Kyger was born in Rockingham County on Sept. 23, 1934,
and was the son of the late David Grimm Kyger and the late Edna Virginia
Shifflett Kyger. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1962 and was stationed
in Germany. He worked many years in poultry houses, and also drilled wells for
Burners. He drove a truck for Smith’s Trucking. In 1971, he started driving for
Mortons Food and retired in 1989, when it was ConAgra. On Nov. 14, 1962, he
married the former Shirley Ann Burkett, who preceded him death on Dec. 28, 1997.
He is survived by one son, Christopher Allen Kyger and companion, Resa
Rodriquez, of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Vickie Shifflett and husband, E.G.,
of Harrisonburg, and Debbie Huffman and husband, Rowdy, of Port Republic; one
son-in-law, Charlie Shifflett and companion, Sharon Michaels; six
granddaughters, April Kite and husband, Chris, of Elkton, Tabatha Shifflett and
fiancé, Allen James, of Harrisonburg, Ashley Huffman and boyfriend, Wesley
Young, of Stanley, Brandi Shifflett and boyfriend, Josh Fitzwater, of
Harrisonburg, Samantha Shifflett of Harrisonburg, Amber Kyger and boyfriend, Ian
Rivera, of Craigsville; one grandson, Danny Wayne Shifflett of Grottoes; three
great-granddaughters, Tamera, Chloe and Hayleigh; two great-grandsons, Jaxon and
Landon; three sisters, Edna Moubray and her late husband, Herbert, of
Harrisonburg, Hilda Lam and husband, Clifton, of Harrisonburg, and Ruth
Shifflett and husband, Delmas, of Elkton; three brothers-in-law, Donald Burkett
and wife, Virginia, Robert Burkett and his late wife, Bernice, William Burkett
and wife, Betty, all of Harrisonburg; and several nieces and nephews, and many
friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammie Jo; three brothers,
Wilford, Oliver, and Arnold Kyger; three sisters, Odessa Harlow, Lula Kyger, and
Lethia Kyger; grandmother, Lula Shifflett; and in-laws, Jake and Myrtal Burkett.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was known
to all as “Pops” and PawPaw to all the children he knew. He enjoyed telling
jokes and talking about the old days. He loved football; the Redskins were his
team, and scratching lottery tickets was his favorite pastime. He enjoyed
playing cards, fishing, and NASCAR. But his biggest joy was help watching his
great-grandbabies. He was loved by all and will be missed by many. The funeral
service will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2013, at the Kyger
Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with Pastor Jimmy Kite officiating. Burial
will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville with military rites. The

KYGER
Danny Keith "Peanut" Kyger, 63, of Amherst, Va., formerly of
McGaheysville, passed away Dec. 21, 2021. He was born July 5, 1958, in
Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Lee Austin and Evrea Morris Kyger. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Hockman
Kyger, and a half brother, Calvin Wyant. Danny loved working on cars and
listening to country music. He was an automotive technician for most of his
working career. He was a loving husband and companion. He is survived by special
friend, Chrysann Rogers; son, Preston Kyger; stepsons, Ralph and R.J. Mace;
stepdaughter, Jennifer Thomas; brothers, Steve Kyger and companion, Julie
Eppard, and Jerry Kyger. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday,
Dec. 27, 2021, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Carter Dean
officiating. Burial to follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, McGaheysville. Visitation
will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, at the funeral home.

Port Republic -- Debbie Sue Kyger Huffman, 50, of Port Republic, passed away
unexpectedly Tuesday, July 12, 2016. A daughter of the late Christopher Columbus
and Shirley Ann Burkett Kyger, she was born December 5, 1965 in Harrisonburg.
Debbie was a graduate of Turner Ashby High School. She worked at LDA Creations
at the Silver Lake Mill and recently as an equipment operator at B&S
Contracting. In her free time, Debbie enjoyed writing poems, crocheting, cooking
and spending time with her dog Zoey. She treasured her time with her
granddaughter, great nieces and great-nephews, who affectionately called her
Grams. She will be missed by her loving family and many friends. On April 12,
1985, she married, Robert "Rowdy" G. Huffman who survives. Also surviving are
her daughter, Ashley N. Huffman and companion, Wesley Young of Port Republic;
brother, Christopher A. Kyger and companion, Cindy of Harrisonburg; sister,
Vickie Shifflett and husband, E.G. of Harrisonburg; granddaughter, Aubree Young;
mother-in-law, Betty Huffman of McGaheysville; brothers-in-law, Charlie
Shifflett and companion, Sharon, Rocky Huffman and Ricky Huffman and wife,

Elmer O. Kyger, 68, of 631 N. Main St., Harrisonburg died Sunday
afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient five days.
He was born Oct. 22, 1903 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late George
and Katherine Shifflett Kyger. Surviving are his wife, the former Lillie Lam;
four daughters, Mrs. Della Eggers, Mrs. Loraine M. Thomas, Mrs. Edna May Finley
and Mrs. Betty Jane Medford, all of Baltimore Md.; four sons, William A.
Franklin D., Jessie G. and Elmer O. Kyger Jr.. all of Biltmore, Md. a sister,
Mrs. Harry Warble of Penn Laird; three brothers, C. T. Kyger of Port Republic
Leonard Kyger of McGaheysville and William Kyger of Georgia, and 23
grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 am. Wednesday at the Grottoes
Pentecostal Church by the Rev. John Morris. Burial will be in the Mt Olivet
Cemetery at McGaheysville. The family will receive friends 7 -- 8 p.m. Tuesday

EVA FLORENCE
LAM KYGER
Eva Florence Lam Kyger, 88, of Mount Crawford, passed away Monday, Sept. 18,
2017, at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born May 15, 1929, in
Elkton, Va., and was a daughter of the late Cletus and Pauline Cubbage Lam. On
April 13, 1946, she married James Edward Kyger, who preceded her in death. They
had 68 wonderful years together. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in
death by an infant daughter, Judith Elaine Kyger, and a sister, Cathaline
Hensley. She was a founding member of the Elkton Seventh-day Adventist Church,
where she remained a faithful member until the present. She lived in Elkton and
McGaheysville before moving to Mount Crawford 13 years ago. While living in
Elkton, she and her husband, James Edward Kyger, owned and operated a store in
Newtown and another store on U.S. 340 (The Rock Store). She worked for several
businesses before her retirement. Eva was an avid gardener and loved her
flowers. She is survived by a son, Charles Kyger and wife, Virginia; a daughter,
Carol Morral and husband, Anthony Scott; three grandchildren, Kenny Kyger and
wife, Erica, Mark Kyger and Rhonda Kyger; two great-grandchildren, who loved her
dearly, Bryan Kyger and Meygan Kyger, all of Mount Crawford, Va.; and a sister,
Julia Merica of McGaheysville, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8
p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton.

Frances Marie Kyger Davis, 81, of Mount Crawford, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1,
2013, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Frances was born in Rockingham County on
March 27, 1932, and was a daughter of the late Chastine and Mary Shifflett
Kyger. Frances graduated from Montevideo High School in 1951 and was employed
with JMU Housekeeping for several years. She married John Ervin Davis, who
survives, on Jan. 4, 1952. In addition to her husband, Frances is survived by
her two sisters, Clearine Gleason and husband, Lawrence, and Helen Hoover, all
of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended Davis and Kyger
families and special nieces, Gloria H. Houle and husband, Bruce, of Staunton and
Deborah Pruitt and husband, Darrell, of Weyers Cave. She is preceded in death by
two brothers, George Kyger and Marshall Kyger, and sister, Ernestine Kyger. A
private graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Danny Herring at
Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. There will not be a formal visitation. However,
friends may call the home of the family at any time. In lieu of flowers,

The funeral for George Arbury Kyger, 73, Port Republic, will be at 11 am. Friday
at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The Revs. Roger Hart and
Doyle Payne will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial
Gardens in Harrisonburg. Mr. Kyger died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where he had been a patient since April 21.
He had been seriously ill since October. He was born Aug. 28, 1924, in
Martinsburg, W.Va., and was the son of the late Chastine and Mary Shifflett
Kyger. He served in the Navy during World War II on the destroyer USS Bristol
with the 5th Fleet. He was a member of the Grottoes Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 4698 and operated George’s 66 in Harrisonburg before retiring. On Feb. 23,
1946, he married the former Mildred H. Dorman, who survives. Also surviving are
one son, Larry E. Kyger, Port Republic one daughter, Deborah Pruitt, Weyers
Cave; three sisters, Clearine Gleason and Helen Hoover, both of Cocoa, Fla., and
Frances Davis, Mount Crawford; and two granddaughters. The family will receive
friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial

James Edward Kyger, 90, of Mount Crawford, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014
at his home. He was born July 23, 1924 in Martinsburg, West Virginia and was the
eldest child to the late Leonard Russell and Maggie Jane McDaniel Kyger. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Lee Austin Kyger
and Sylvester Kyger; sister, Mary Elizabeth Kirtley; and an infant daughter
Judith Elaine Kyger. James was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran of World War II,
and he was a member of the Elkton Seventh Day Adventist Church. He and his wife
owned and operated three businesses in Elkton, one store in Newtown, the other
on US 340 South (the Rock Store), and a dump truck business. He retired from
Burner Well Drilling in McGaheysville. He is survived by his loving and devoted
wife of 68 years, Eva Lam Kyger, whom he married April 13, 1946. Also surviving
is a son Charles Kyger and wife Virginia; a daughter Carol Jean Morral and
husband Scott all of Mount Crawford, VA; three grandchildren Kenny Kyger and
wife Erica, Mark Kyger, and Rhonda Kyger; two great grandchildren who meant the
world to him and whom he dearly loved, Bryan Kyger and Meygan Kyger; sisters
Almeta Hensley, Gurnie Kyger, and Thelma Shifflett all of Harrisonburg, VA, and
Edna Cannella of Port Richie, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will

The funeral for Joseph Reid Kyger, 68, of Forrestville, Md., will be conducted
at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Harrisonburg by the
Rev. Jon S. Stewart. Burial will be in Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Mr. Kyger
died Sunday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., where
he had been a patient since Jan. 2. He was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Elkton and
was the son of the late Roy Lee and Lucy Jane Dean Kyger. Mr. Kyger served with
the National Guard and was a member of the Methodist Church. He retired as a
streetcar driver for D.C. Transit and was a member of Local 689. On Nov. 26,
1948, he married the former Beatrice Shifflett, who survives. Also surviving are
two sons, Russel Kyger of Forrestville, Md., and Danny Kyger of Baltimore; two
brothers, Howard Lee Kyger of Springfield and William Holmes Kyger of
Timberville; and two sisters, Anna Held Rhine of West Point and Dora Jenkins of

McGAHEYSVILLE - The funeral for L. Wilford Kyger, 64, of McGaheysville will be

at McGaheysville. Mr. Kyger, who had worked for Bond Lumber Co., died Saturday
morning. He was born Sept. 19, 1921, in McGaheysville and was a son of Edna

McGaheysville United Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are
two brothers, Arnold Kyger of McGaheysville and Chris Kyger of Harrisonburg, and

Shifflett of Elkton. A brother, Oliver Kyger, drowned in the flood on Nov. 5,

Louise Rebecca Morris Kyger, 83, of Shenandoah, passed away at her home on
Sunday, October 23, 2016. She was born on July 23, 1933, in Harrisonburg and was
a daughter of the late Lonzo Lee and Myrl Reubush Morris. Louise graduated from
Port Republic High School, attended Madison College and retired from Nations
Bank after 28 years of service. She was a member of Christ United Methodist
Church in Shenandoah, where she served on various committees and was a former
Sunday school teacher; she was also a life member of the Shenandoah Volunteer
Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and was treasurer until 2015. Louise also
formerly served as a board member for the Page County Department of Social
Services. She had a deep love for animals, especially her cats. She is survived
by a son, Roger Stepp of Elkton; a daughter, Jennifer Stepp Foltz of Shenandoah;
a brother, Byron Morris and a sister, Jean Hogshead, both of Bridgewater; and a
number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jennings
Morris. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016,
at Christ United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m.
Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Larry Aikens

RAPHINE - Lyle Harding Kyger, 60, of Raphine died of cancer Saturday morning at
King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton. Mr. Kyger had been ill nine months and
was admitted to the hospital Friday. He was born April 17, 1921, at Port
Republic and was a son of Zetta Shifflett Kyger of Grottoes and the late Charles
William Kyger. He worked 35 years for du Pont in Waynesboro and retired July 1,
1978. Mr. Kyger was a member of Port Republic United Methodist Church and was a
veteran of World War II. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife,
Audrey Ann Davis Kyger of Raphine; two sons, Donald Keith Kyger of Raphine and
Sidney Davis Kyger of Staunton; two brothers, Charles William Kyger Jr. of
Williamsburg and Robert Lee Kyger of Elkton; two sisters, Ruby Hess of
Lancaster, Pa., and Mary Morris of Grottoes; and five grandchildren. A graveside
service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church
cemetery by the Rev. Russell B. Fleming. The body is at the Henry Funeral Home

McGAHEYSVILLE — The funeral for Mary Elizabeth Kirtley, 48, of McGaheysville

Olivet Cemetery at McGaheysville. Mrs. Kirtley died late Friday at her home. She
was born July 22, 1941, in McGaheysville and was a daughter of Maggie Jane
McDaniel Kyger and the late Leonard R. Kyger of McGaheysville. She lived the
majority of her life in McGaheysville and was a member of the United Methodist
Church. In addition to her husband, Ben. jam Franklin Kirtley, and her mother,
she is survived by one daughter, Linda Marie Kirtley of McGaheysville; three
sons, Jeff Kirtley of Harrisonburg, Douglas Kirtley of Broadway and Frank
Kirtley of Elkton; two brothers, James E. and Sylvester Kyger, both of
McGaheysville; four sisters, Almeta Hensley of Mineral, Edna Cannella of

Kyger Funeral
McGAHEYSVILLE - The funeral for Oliver Kyger, 48, a farmer from McGaheysville,
will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. The service
will be conducted by the Rev. Johnny Hensley. Burial will be in Mount Olivet
Cemetery. Mr. Kyger drowned Tuesday afternoon apparently as he attempted to walk
across the U.S. 340 at Verbena Bridge after his car stalled. He was born in
McGaheysville May 9, 1937, and was a son of Edna Shifflett Kyger of
McGaheysville and the late David G. Kyger. Besides his mother, he is survived by
three brothers, Wilford and Arnold Kyger, both of McGaheysville, and Chris Kyger
of Harrisonburg; and six sisters, Evelyn Kyger and Edna Lee Mowbray, both of
McGaheysville, Hilda Lam, Odessa Harlow and Lethia Kyger, all of Harrisonburg,
and Ruth Alice Shifflett of Elkton. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30
p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Arnold Kyger at other times.

RUBY
LORRAINE KYGER
Ruby Lorraine Kyger, 89, of Shenandoah, passed away Wednesday,
Jan. 18, 2023, at Skyview Springs Rehab and Nursing Center in Luray. She was
born Dec. 8, 1933, in Rockingham County to the late John and Bessie Shifflett
Morris. On Aug. 19, 1950, she married Robert Lee Kyger, who preceded her in
death in April of 1990. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded
in death by her daughter, Debra Plum and numerous brothers and sisters. Ruby had
a longstanding career working as a seamstress at Sleepware then proudly going on
to work as a CNA at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home, where she later
retired from. In her spare time, she loved cooking, family dinners, gardening
and especially spending time with her family. She was a devoted Christian woman
and she attended Bible Holiness Church of Elkton. She is survived by sons,
Robbie Kyger and wife, Sandra, of Shenandoah and Gary Kyger and wife, Sarah, of
Elkton; brother, Kenny Morris of Berkley Springs, W.Va.; sisters, Donna Cubbage
of Berkley Springs, W.Va., and Elvarene Vanorsdale of Hancock, Md.; eight
grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. A
funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, at Shenandoah
Assembly of God in Shenandoah with Pastor Carter Dean officiating. Burial to
follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg. The family will receive
friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
RUSSELL ARCHIE KYGER

Russell Archie Kyger, 53, of Bloomer Springs Road in McGaheysville, died Friday,
Nov. 18, 2005, at his home of cancer. Mr. Kyger was born Nov. 27, 1951, in
Harrisonburg, and was the son of Beatrice Virginia Shifflett Kyger of
McGaheysville and the late Joseph Reid Kyger. He grew up in the Washington, D.C.
and Maryland area. He helped Quatum Link (Q-Link) get started in 1984, which
later turned into AOL. He worked for the Capitol Center, where he set up for
games and concerts. He was a guitar player, who wrote and composed music and
played with several musicians at the Capitol Center, both rock and blues. Mr.
Kyger worked on genealogy for 25 years with Ellis Worth Kyger and later with
Maggie Kyger. He returned to the Shenandoah Valley in 1999. In addition to his
mother, he is survived by his wife, Mary Marie Dove Kyger, whom he married Nov.
21, 1980; a daughter, Michelle Elvanda Virginia Kyger at home; and a brother,
Daniel Michael Kyger of New Carlton, Md. Pastor Roland Good will conduct the
funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at
Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 this evening at
the funeral home.
