ALISTEEN S. MARSHALL
Alisteen S. (Alice) Marshall, 71, of 65 Morningside Drive in Mount Sidney, was
reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband and Jesus on April 19, 2008. Born
June 18, 1936, in Augusta County, she was a daughter of the late Charles O. and
Carrie (Weaver) Simmons. On September 28, 1957, she was united in marriage to
the love of her life, Boyd H. "Bunk" Marshall, with whom she shared a blessed
union prior to his death on March 3, 2007. Mrs. Marshall was employed for 37
years as a Quality Assurance Inspector by American Safety Razor until her
retirement in 1991. Fondly known as "Nanny" by her family and friends she was a
woman who possessed great strength of faith and was a devoted member of
Crossroads Baptist Church in Fishersville. She loved to cook, collect dolls and
spend time with those who were close to her. She was a loving mother to her only
daughter, Malinda Kaye Eavers and her husband, Michael Thomas (Tommy/Spanky)
Eavers who survive her. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Amber Beth Eavers
and Ashley Lynn Eavers, whom she cherished; a sister, Dorothy Shover of Staunton
and three brothers, Leo Simmons of Maryland, Marvin Simmons of Staunton and
Charles O. Simmons, Jr. of Roanoke; a special niece, Patty Marshall Campbell of
Grottoes and a very special and loving sister-in-law, Vera Lee Bowman of
McGaheysville. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday April
23, 2008 at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg, followed by a Celebration
of Life Service at 11:30 a.m. in Crossroads Baptist Church, 3100 Crossroads
Lane, Fishersville, with Pastor Bill Johnson officiating. Fellowship will
follow. Active pallbearers will be Dude Western, Donnie Halterman, Bob Hanna,
John Eavers, Jeremy Eavers and Jeremy Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be
members of Crossroads Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7:00
to 8:30 P.M., on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds

ANNIE MARSHALL RAINES
PENN LAIRD - Mrs. Annie Marshall Raines, 75, of Penn Laird died Monday morning
at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Friday. She
had been in falling health three years. Mrs. Raines was born March 1, 1900 at
Rocky Bar and was a daughter of the late Charles Henry and Mary Elizabeth Wood
Marshall. She spent most of her life in the Keezletown area and had lived at
Penn Laird 14 years. She was a member of Greenmount Church of the Brethren, but
in recent years attended Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. On Aug. 29, 1919 she
married Charles E. Raines Sr., who died Sept. 22. 1972. Surviving are seven
daughters. Mrs. Maggie R. Williams of Moorefield, W, Va., Mrs. E. J. Morris of
Elkton, Mrs. Harry R. Byrd of Dayton, Mrs. Benny Sepulveda of Hawaii, Mrs.
William G. Blose of Penn Laird, Mrs. Russell G. Smith Jr. of Harrisonburg and
Mrs. Edward A. Garber of Broadway; two sons. Jackson M. Raines of McGaheysville
and Charles E. Raines Jr, of Keezletown; 37 grandchildren, and 11
great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mill
Creek Church of the Brethren by the Rev. S. Earl Mitchell and the Rev. I. J.
Garber. Burial will be in Port Republic Cemetery. The body is at the Lindsey
Harrisonburg Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends' 7:30 - 8:30 p.

ARLINE MARGARET MARSHALL MUNDY
Arline Margaret Marshall Mundy, 94, of Stanardsville, died Sunday, May 18, 2003,
at Evergreene Meadows in Stanardsville. Mrs. Mundy was born Dec. 15, 1908, and
was the daughter of the late Robert Clark and Gertrude Vernon Marshall. She grew
up in Dyke and joined Mount Olivet Christian Church. She graduated from Blue
Ridge School in 1926. She attended Shenandoah College in Dayton for two years
and Bridgewater College for one year. She graduated from Madison College in 1941
and taught in Norton for a year and at Keezletown Elementary School for 30
years. Mrs. Mundy was a member of the Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren
for more than 50 years. On Aug. 8, 1930, she married Theodore Wampler Mundy and
moved to the Shenandoah Valley. She lived in Harrisonburg from 1948 until July
of 1999, when she became a resident of Evergreene Meadows. Survivors include a
daughter, Maxine Mundy Ritchie of Harrisonburg and Yellowstone National Park,
Wyo.; a brother, Robert D. Marshall of Dyke; four grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Mount
Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Ryan Funeral Home in

ATAUNE MARETA HAMMER MARSHALL
Ataune Mareta (Hammer) Marshall, 84, widow of the late Ivan Nathaniel Marshall,
of 225 McBrydge Drive, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, June 8, 2013, at
Augusta Health in Fishersville. Mrs. Marshall was born May 23, 1929, in
Rockingham County, a daughter of the late Jesse E. and Rosa Dean Hammer. Mareta
was a member of Victory Worship Center. She was a great woman of faith and a
Godly example to her family and others around her. She enjoyed traveling, eating
out, working with flowers and spending time with her family. In addition to her
parents and her husband of nearly 66 years, Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death
by two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Bosserman and Holly Newlen; five brothers,
Wampler, John, Bernard, Rodney and Owen Hammer; three sisters, Janet Roach,
Rosalie Pryce, and Doris Ruth Helfrich. Survivors include her daughter, Faye M.
Bosserman and husband Jerry; a son Darrell K. Marshall and his wife Traci all of
Swoope; three sisters, Jetta Raynes and Margie Mayes of Grottoes, and Wanda
Comer of Elkton; six brothers, Roland of Waynesboro, Mensel, Douglas, Larry and
Randy all of Elkton and William Hammer of Shenandoah; five grandchildren, Tony
Bosserman, Julie Coyner and her husband Brian, Brian, Brett, and Brooke
Marshall; five great-grandchildren, Hannah and Abigail Bosserman, Nathan Newlen
and his wife Alicia, Jeremy Newlen, Izabelle and one great-great grandchild,
Bryleigh Newlen. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday,
June 11, 2013 at Victory Worship Center by Pastor Ray Eppard. Burial will follow
in Oak Lawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons. The family

MOUNT JOY-Barbara Ann Rhoads, 64, died Saturday, December 21, 2002 at York
Hospital following an auto accident. She was the wife of the late Lawrence
Rhoads to whom she was married for 42 years. Born in Grottoes, Va., she was the
daughter of the late Franklin and Rena (Shifflett) Marshall. She lived in Mt.
Joy for 24 years, prior to that she lived in Marietta for over 21 years. She

Mrs. Bertie J. Marshall, 85, of Dyke, died Sunday in a Charlottesville hospital.
She was a native of Greene County and a member of the Mt. Olive Christian
Church. She is survived by a foster son, Orvin Shifflett of Earlysville; four
foster daughters, Mrs. Goldie C. Root of Barboursville, Mrs. Nevada S. Starkie
of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Hazel Herring of Dyke and Mrs. Doris Richards of
Ruckersville and 14 grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Mt.
Olive Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery, the Rev. Silas

BLANCHE MARSHALL COOK
Blanche Marshall Cook, 90, passed away peacefully Friday, March 28, 2008. Born
in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 30, 1917, she was the daughter of the
late Cecil Phillips Marshall and Robert Lee Marshall. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Dan H. Cook Sr.; and son, John F. Cook; six brothers; George,
Virgil, Tom, Willie, Lynton and Fulton; and two sisters, Viola and Eva. Blanche
is survived by her son, Dan H. Cook Jr. and his wife, Sandra; her
daughter-in-law, Darlene K. Cook; three grandchildren, Forrest Ray Cook, Karen
Sue Cook and Dan H. Cook III; and three great-grandchildren, Johnathan, Heather
and Bryan. She is also survived by her two sisters, Louise M. North and Lottie
M. Buck; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was retired from the
Charlottesville City School System. The family will receive friends from 7 until
8 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. The funeral

Blanche Taylor Marshall, 82, of Madison passed away Saturday, August 23, 2003,
at a Culpeper Hospital. She was born August 20, 1920, in Madison County,
daughter of the late Willie Guy and Bessie Kirtley Taylor, her husband was the
late Clarence B. Marshall, she was also preceded in death by five brothers and
five sisters. She is survived by a daughter, Maxine Beverly of Bedford, Va.;
three sons, Bobby F. Marshall and wife Mary of Stanardsville, Charles B.
Marshall and wife Alice of Madison, and Edwin Wayne Marshall and wife Pat of
Barboursville; seven grandson, Percy Beverly, Mark Beverly, Keith Beverly,
Charles Marshall, Anthony Marshall, Chris Marshall, and Robbie Marshall, a
granddaughter, Stephanie Anderson, 14 great-grandchildren, two great
great-grandchildren, a sister, Lizzie Taylor of Madison also survives. Funeral
service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Ryan Funeral Chapel in
Quinque, with Pastor Jeffrey Shifflett officiating, interment will be in the

BOYD H. MARSHALL
Boyd H. (Bunk) Marshall, 71, of 13 Loop Circle went to be with Jesus on March 3,
2007 following a brief illness. He was born April 2, 1935 at University of
Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville to the late Melvin and Mae Sampson
Marshall. Mr. Marshall proudly served in the United States Army from October 14,
1954 to October 6, 1956 during the Korean Conflict. He spent the early years of
his life as a truck driver for D. M. Connor in Stuarts Draft. He later retired
to farm, a hobby a he truly enjoyed. He was a member of Central Point Christian
Church in Waynesboro. On September 28, 1957, he married the "love of his life"
Alisteen Simmons, who survives him. He was also a loving father to his only
daughter, Malinda "Kaye" Eavers and son-in-law, Michael Thomas "Tommy" Eavers.
He is also survived by two granddaughters, Amber Beth and Ashley Lynn Eavers who
were the "rays of sunshine in his life". Also surviving is a special loving
sister, Vera Lee Bowman of McGaheysville, a brother, Richard Marshall of
Waynesboro and a special niece Patty Marshall Campbell of Grottoes. He was
preceded in death by his brother and closest friend, Allen Marshall and another
brother, Frank Marshall. A celebration of his life will be conducted at 11:00 AM
Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro by Pastor
James Joyner. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Harrisonburg. Active

BUFORD EARL MELONE MARSHALL
Buford Earl Melone Marshall went to be with the Lord on Nov. 12, 2004, at the
Ruxton Health Care Center at the Village in Fork Union. Buford was born on April
25, 1906, to Lena Cole and Finks Pemberton Melone and was the third of four
children. She was married to John Franklin Marshall from 1925 until his death on
Dec. 18, 1963. She was also preceded in death by her only child, John F.
Marshall, Jr. Survivors are her daughter-in-law, Joy C. Marshall, of
Charlottesville; her grand-daughter, Sharon Lee Marshall Davis, and her husband,
Michael, of Duncan, Oklahoma; her grand-son, Kevin S. Marshall, of
Charlottesville; and two great-grand-daughters, Allison and Catherine Henrietta
of Fluvanna. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and many
friends. A graveside service will be Nov. 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Monticello

CECIL COLE MARSHALL
Cecil Cole Marshall, 65, of Charlottesville died on Tuesday, September 30, 2008,
while working at St. Margaret's Farm in Cobham. Born July 27, 1943, in Suffolk,
Virginia, he was the son of Virginia Cole Marshall of Charlottesville and the
late Harvey Marshall. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby
Marshall and Jimmy Marshall. Cecil was the owner/operator of Marshall and Sons
General Contractors for many years. He loved farming and was a long time member
of Buffalo Trail Riders. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who
would have laid down his life for his family and friends. Surviving him are his
wife of 47 years, Charlotte Ann Marshall of Charlottesville; a daughter, Tammy
Gilmer and her husband, Timothy, of Charlottesville; a son, Jeffery Marshall and
his wife, Margaret, of Charlottesville; five grandchildren, Ashlee Gilmer and
her fianc?, Andy, Meaghan Shifflett and her husband, T. J., Lydia Marshall,
Danielle Marshall, and Jacob Marshall,; three great-grand-children, Caden
Shifflett, Parker Shifflett, and the third coming; two sisters, Nancy Taylor and
her husband, Ron, of Charlottesville and Kay Taylor of Charlottesville; a

MANY PAY TRIBUTE TO LATE CHARLES H. MARSHALL

3 - Funeral services for Charles Henry Marshall, well-known East Rockingham
farmer who was killed last Thursday morning when a Norfolk and Western train
struck his buggy near Island Ford, were held here yesterday from the Methodist
Church. The Rev. C. E. Long officiated. Pallbearers were O. D. Sellers, M. H.
Harrison, W. P. R. Weaver, T. N. Sellers, W. W. Sellers, and J. C. Armstrong.
The church was crowed with sympathetic friends of the family who paid their last
sad tribute to the departed, attesting to the esteem in which he was held. The
body was removed from Brill's Undertaking Parlors at Elkton to the Marshall
home, three miles south of Island Ford, Saturday afternoon.

Rockingham County Man Dies Instantly as
Locomotive Strikes Buggy.
HARRISONBURG, VA., December 30. - Charles Marshall,
60 year-old farmer of East Rockingham was instantly killed at 10 o'clock this
morning when a Norfolk and Western train struck his horse and buggy on a grade
crossing near Island Ford, fifteen miles southeast of here. Marshall, the father
of ten children, was returning home after making his daily shipment of milk at
the railroad station. There is a clear view of the track in either direction at
the point where the accident occurred. The horse also was killed.

Charles Henry Marshall, 85, of Rio Road, died today in a Charlottesville
Hospital. He was the son of the late Fannie Marshall and George F. Marshall. He
was a retired farmer and a member of the Batesville Methodist Church. Surviving
are his wife, Mary Frances Marshall; three sons, Charles Marshall of Hialeah,
Fla., Lewis Marshall of Afton and George Early Marshall of Charlottesville; four
daughters, Mrs. Marshall Tomlin of Faber and Mrs. Gladys Graves. Mrs. Hannah
Gibson and Mrs. Daisy Gibson of Afton; a stepson, George Fitch of
Charlottesville; two half-brothers, Robert E. and Thomas J. Marshall of
Earlysville; five half-sisters, Mrs. Eunice Cox and Mrs. Julia Huff of
Charlottesville, and Mrs. Bertha Connor, Mrs. Catherine Dodd and Mrs. Louise
Funia of Richmond; 26 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. The funeral will
be at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Hawkins Funeral Chapel with burial in Rockgate
Cemetery in Crozet. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tomorrow night
at the funeral home.

CHARLES LEONARD MARSHALL JR.
Charles Leonard Marshall, Jr., 82, of Elkton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6,
2021, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Lenny was born March 18, 1938, in
Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Charles L. Sr. and the Margaret
Lillian Miller Marshall. Lenny was a retired employee of Reynolds Metals in
Grottoes. He attended Mount Olivet Christian Church in McGaheysville. He loved
his horses, hunting, sharing precious memories with family and his grandbabies.
He also enjoyed playing guitar and banjo with family and friends. On March 21,
1959, he married Georgia Selena Shifflett, who passed away June 21, 2016. He is
survived by a son, Michael L. "Mike" Marshall and wife, Sheila; three daughters,
Sonia L. Marshall, Mitzi C. Norris and husband, Travis, and Dana R. Boller and
husband, Charles "Chuck"; siblings, Mary "Buddy" Huntington and husband,
Phillip, and Joyce "Sissy" Wysong and husband, William; seven grandchildren;
fourteen great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and
nephews. Also surviving are the Hisey, Monger, Hensley, Davidson, Robertson and
Rankin families and extended family too numerous to mention, Papaw loved you
all, and his horses, Olé Bill, Butter Cup, and Prissy. In addition to his
parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brother, George K. Marshall;
sister-in-law, Jane Marshall; grandson, Matthew Jason Shifflett; nephew, Derrick
"Sammy" Foster, and father- and mother-in-law, Irvin and Lydia Shifflett. He
lost his dog, Jack, three days before passing. A graveside service, with Pastor
Wayne Wright officiating, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021, at Eastlawn
Memorial Gardens. Facial coverings and social distancing will be required for
the health of others. Family and friends may visit Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton
from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, to pay their last respects.

DAVID HOWARD MARSHALL JR.
David Howard Marshall, Jr., 68, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, died Monday, July
17, 2006. He was born October 15, 1937, in Ruckersville, Virginia, a son of the
late David Howard Marshall and Bertha Roberts Marshall. In addition to his
parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Jane Marshall; and
his brother, John Tavner Marshall. He is survived by three sisters, Eleanor Pace
of Ruckersville, Virginia, Jane Haney of Richmond, Virginia, and Joyce Taylor of
Stanardsville, Virginia. Mr. Marshall served in the United States Army and
worked with gas pipelines for a number of years. He loved sports especially
baseball. Mickey Mantle was one of his favorite players. He was a member of
Spring Hill Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday,
July 20, 2006, at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Carlton
officiating. A viewing will be held from noon until 1 p.m. Thursday, July 20,

Emma Marie Marshall, 77, of Stanardsville went to her eternal home on Tuesday,
December 16, 2008, from her daughter's home with her family around her when she
left. She was born April 23, 1931, in Charlottesville, the daughter of the late
Whitfield Morris and Susie Ellen Shifflett Morris. She was also preceded in
death by her sister, Dorothy Ellen Morris, and three half siblings, Howard,
Louise and Vergie Morris, and her former husband, Elie W. Marshall whom she was
married to for over 40 years. Emma leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter,
Joyce Marshall of Stanardsville; grandchildren, Valerie and Vanessa Thacker; a
special grandson-in-law, Chris Thacker; special great- grandchildren, Derek,
Jenna and Daniel Thacker, Matthew Roach, Heather and Hillary Thacker whom Emma
had a big part in raising; great-great-grandchildren, Andrew Thacker and Landon
Alther; a nephew who was like a son to her, Harold Morris; a great-nephew,
Harold Rodney Morris; a great niece, Ashley Renee Morris; and a brother, David
Morris. Emma will be greatly missed by all her family. The family wants to thank

George Kenneth
Marshall, 62, of Elkton, died Aug. 31, 2002, at his home. Mr. Marshall was born
March 2, 1940, in Rockingham County, and was the son of Margaret Miller Marshall
of Elkton and the late Charles L. Marshall. Mr. Marshall was an electrician at
Dupont for many years before retiring and was a member of the Upper Room Church
at Elkton. He graduated from Montevideo High School and served in the United
States Army during the Vietnam War. On June 14, 1969, he married the former Jane
Riddle, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, George K. Marshall Jr. and
wife, Kara, J. Scott Marshall and wife, Wendy, all of Elkton; a brother, Charles
L. Marshall Jr. and wife, Georgia, Elkton; two sisters, Joyce Wysong and
husband, Bill, Elkton, Mary Huntingdon and husband, John, of Spotsylvania
County; two granddaughters, Kayla Faith Marshall, Abigail Faith Marshall;

Harry Lee Marshall, 72, of Charlottesville, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004,
at Martha Jefferson Hospital following a brief illness. Born October 18, 1931,
in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Joseph Andrew Marshall and Mamie
Herring Marshall. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Willard
Marshall, Gaines A. Marshall and George W. Marshall; and a nephew, Lewis
Marshall. Harry was a graduate of William Monroe High School; he served with the
United States Navy and retired after 30 years of service as a Detective with the
Charlottesville Police Department, and was a partner of Marshall Hairstylists.
He was a Charter member of the Thompson Hall Lodge # 5 FOP where he was a
Past-President; a Life Member of the BPOE #389 and served as a past trustee; he
was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge # 1028 since 1974, a member of
the American Legion Post #74; and a member of the Young Business Men's
Association; and a member of the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church. He is
survived by his wife of 40 years, Sally Franklin Marshall of Charlottesville;
his son, Charles "Chuck" E. Marshall and his wife, Sandie, of Charlottesville;
his daughter, Barbara "Barbi" M. Morris and her husband, Jim, of Palmyra; a
brother Walter L. Marshall and his wife, Marie, of Lexington; four

Herbert Marshall Via, 85, of Harriston, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Via was born May 10, 1918, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late
Oscar and Attor Elizabeth Wood Via. He attended Mount Bethel United Methodist
Church and was a carpenter. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in France
and Germany. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and lived in
Orlando, Fla., and Anchorage, Alaska, for several years. Survivors include a
sister, Eilar Via Humphries of Grottoes, and a number of nieces and nephews. The

HUNTER RAY MARSHALL
Hunter Ray Marshall, 46, went to be with the Lord and the ones that went before
him in the early morning hours of Monday, August 25, 2008, after a short but
tough battle with cancer. Ray was born July 7, 1962, in Charlottesville,
Virginia. He was the Service Director at Jim Price Chevrolet for 14 years. Ray
loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was dedicated to
Tracey, his wife of 18 years and their 15 year old daughter, Brittany. His last
two big adventures were a cruise with his wife to Costa Rica in March and a trip
to Florida in July to watch his daughter fast pitch in a softball world series
at Disney World. Ray was preceded in death by his dear mother, Shirley Batten,
in August 2006. He leaves to cherish his loving memory a large family and
extended family that includes father and stepmother, Hunter and Leanna Marshall,
step-father, Harrison Batten; siblings, David Marshall, Glenda Marshall, Becky
Oakerson, and Darlene Cummings; mother and father- -in-law, John and Anne Klueg,
and their families, as well as many other friends and loved ones. He warmly
touched the lives of many and the family would like to express their gratitude
for the many visits, phone calls, and expressions of love and support over the
past few months. We would also like to thank and express our appreciation for
the medical teams of Dr. Gordon Morris, Dr. John Morris, Dr John McGovern, and
the nursing staff of MJH South 7. Everyone provided excellent loving care and
support as Ray fought the great fight and we are most grateful. The family will

Mr. Marshall was born Feb. 27, 1929, in Augusta County, son of the late William
Henry Marshall and Ethel Pearl (Morris) Marshall Lawson. Ivan was a member of
Victory Worship Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was the owner of
Marshall Construction, from which he retired. He enjoyed traveling, eating out,
racing and time spent with his family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marshall
was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Bosserman and Holly
Newlen; seven sisters, Inez Diehl, Yvonne Shock, Geraldine Ralls, Arbutus

James Franklin Marshall, 82, of 1600 6th Street, died Tuesday, August 11, 1987
in a local nursing home. He was born November 26, 1904 in Charlottesville, son
of the late Wesley L. Marshall and Lula Garrison Marshall. He was the husband of
the late Julia Collins Marshall. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jynetta M.
Thomlin of Gordonsville; one son, Jacob D. Marshall and daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Annie Lee Marshall, both of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Joyce M.
Saunders. Mr. Marshall retired in 1974 from his position as Heating Plant
operator at the University of Virginia after 10 years of service; prior to
joining UVa. he was a loom operator with Charlottesville Woolen Mills and a

James Thomas Marshall, retired Greene County farmer, died yesterday morning in a
local hospital. He was a native of Greene, son of the late William Ernest and
Frances Hensley Marshall, and was 81 years of age. Besides his wife, the former
Miss Lillie Herring, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Helen Armentrout, of
Harrisonburg, and five sons, William and Elmer Marshall of Profit, and Hugh and
Vernie Marshall of this city. There are 15 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. Mr. Marshall also leaves one brother, Joseph A. Marshall, of
this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Courtney, of Centreville, Fairfax
County, and Mrs. Edna Hensley and Mrs. Linda Rittenour, both of Alexandria. The
funeral will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from Chestnut Grove Church,
near Earlysville, the service to be conducted by the Rev. Cecil G. Carter, of
this city. Burial will follow in the churchyard. The remains will lie in state
at the family home near Stanardsville until 1:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

James Vernie Marshall, 86, of Charlottesville died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at
his home. Born October 10, 1921, in Greene County, Virginia, he was the son of
the late James Thomas Marshall and Lillie Herring Marshall. He was also preceded
in death by two sisters, Helen Armentrout and Ethel Haney; and four brothers,
William, Joseph, Hughes, and Elmer Marshall. Mr. Marshall was retired with 30
years of service from the University of Virginia as an Elevator Mechanic then
later Supervisor. He was an avid hunter and camper, previously attended Mt. View
Baptist Church, and had served in WW II in the United States Army during the
Pacific Campaign in the Philippines. Surviving him are his wife of 59 years,
Pearl Marshall of Charlottesville; four daughters, Helen Marshall of
Charlottesville, Ethel Hutchinson and her husband, Bill, of Gordonsville,
Shirley Irving and her husband, Steve, of Gordonsville, and Rachel Collier and
her husband, Tommie, of Crozet; three sons, Jimmy Marshall and his wife, Linda,
of Scottsville, Kenny Marshall of Keswick, and Melvin Marshall and his wife,
Teresa, of Scottsville; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and many
nieces, nephews, and cousins. He loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed his

Jane Riddle Marshall, 68, of Elkton, Va., passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020,
at her home. Mrs. Marshall was born April 23, 1952, in Elkton,Va., and was a
daughter of the late Jennings and Alma Housden Riddle. Jane was a lifelong
resident of Elkton and had previously been employed with Stoney Run Farms and
K&T Services. She loved God, her family, and her flowers. She will be remembered
for her kindness, generosity and known to many as MiMi. On June 14, 1969, she
married George Kenneth Marshall, who preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 2002.
Surviving are her sons, Ken Marshall, Jr. and wife, Kara, and Scott Marshall and
his wife, Wendy, all of Elkton; two sisters, Brenda Crist and Wanda Leavitt and
husband, Charles; a brother, Jimmy Riddle and wife, Amy; four grandchildren,

JIMMIE EDWARD MARSHALL
Jimmie Edward Marshall passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the age of
84 at Willow Estates. Jim was born January 26, 1935, delivered by Dr. Tanner, in
Grottoes, Virginia. He was the son of the late William Henry Marshall and Ethel
Pearl (Morris) Marshall Lawson. Jim joined the U.S. Army and served in the 11th
Airborne. Jim married Joyce Ann (Via) Marshall on June 26, 1953. Joy was the
love of his life and he often referred to her as "Jimmie's Joy." Jim was a gypsy
at heart and wasn't afraid to follow his dream. Initially, he worked at Ford and
GM assembly plants welding oil storage tanks and then owned a service station in
Grottoes that is still in use today. Jim found his true calling building homes
which brought him to Alaska, which he referred to as "the land of milk and
honey." He survived the 1964 earthquake by hanging on to a telephone pole. He
built homes in Alaska, Hawaii, Virginia, and Florida, before finally moving back
to Grottoes. Jim is survived by his two sons and their wives, Larry E. and
Brenna Marshall of Anchorage Alaska and Jeffrey R. and Michele Marshall of
Rigby, Idaho; grandchildren, Matthew Marshall, Savanna Marshall, and Allie
(Marshall) Reece; two great grandchildren, Mia and Asher; and caregiver, cousin
and "bestest" friend, Norma Jean Morris, who loved him dearly. Larry's stepsons,
Ryan, Kristopher, and Alexander Lowe, along with their sister, Savanna Marshall,
loved him and enjoyed watching Walker Texas Ranger with him. There are also many
more nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jimmie was preceded in death by seven

John Tavner Marshall, 70, of Ruckersville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his
home. He was born April 30, 1933, in Ruckersville, a son of the late David
Howard and Bertha Roberts Marshall. He was preceded in death by his son, Tavner
H. Marshall and a granddaughter, Morgan Kendall Shifflett. He leaves to cherish
his memory, his wife of 47 years, Ann Cason Marshall; two daughters, Teresa
Gilbert and her husband, Frank, of Afton, La Verne Shifflette and her husband,
Glen of Stanardsville; one daughter, Jessica Gilbert of Evinton, Va.; two
grandsons, Arron Gilbert of Richmond, Matthew Shifflett of Stanardsville; three
sisters, Joyce Taylor of Stanardsville, Eleanor Pace of Ruckersville and Jane
Haney and her husband, Harol of Richmond; and one brother, David H. Marshall of
Martinsburg, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He
worked for the F.A.A. as a mechanic for 35 years before retiring in 1999. He was
an active cattle farmer and enjoyed farming. A funeral service will be held at 1
p.m. Tuesday, at Spring Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Carlton
officiating. Interment will take place in the church cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ryan Funeral Home. Friends and

John
Wayne Marshall, 73, of Rockingham, VA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior
surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, October 23, 2022. He was born
February 19, 1949, and was the son of the late Rev. Thomas J. (T.J.) Marshall
and Pauline Lilly Marshall Dean. He graduated from Montevideo High School. John
worked as a siding subcontractor for over 30 years at Davenport Insulation as
well as enjoyed full time farming. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Karla
Stoneberger Marshall; two sons, Timothy S. Marshall and wife, Lisa, and Robert
W. Marshall and wife, Teri; one daughter, Tara J. Davidson and husband, Eric;
one brother, Roy L. Lilly; one sister, Sharon E. Gibson and husband, Douglas
(Butch); seven grandchildren, Michaela Marshall, Sarah Beth Marshall, Tyler
Marshall, Abigail Marshall, Amber Hodge, Ashton Hodge, and Kyle Evans; one
great-grandson, Isiah Lee, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition
to his parents, he was proceeded in death by a stepson, Christopher A. Maiden;
brothers, Charles L. Marshall and wife, Lillian, and Thomas J. Marshall, Jr. and
wife, Ruth, and one sister, Mary M. Lam and husband, Owen. John loved spending
time with family and friends telling hunting, fishing, camping, and boating
stories and reminiscing about days gone by. His yearly butchering day was the
second Saturday of December, and he took pride in curing his hams. He was a
member of the National Tractor Pulling Association and achieved National
Championships as The Blue Jay Pulling Team. John was a member of The Upper Room
Church in Elkton, VA and enjoyed participating in church events when he was able
to. He had a strong faith in God and loved fellowship time with his church
family. Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. till 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 26,
2022, at The Upper Room Church in Elkton. The Memorial Service will be at 2
p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2022, at The Upper Room Church, Pastor Barbara

John Z. Marshall, well known farmer of the White Hall section, died at 5 o'clock
this morning at his home, after a brief illness. Mr. Marshall was a native of

(Hensley) Marshall, and was sixty-five years of age. Besides his wife, he is
survived by six children, three sons and three daughters - John Marshall, of
this city; George Marshall, of Richmond; Carl Marshall, of White Hall; Mrs.
Gilbert Mowbray, of Richmond; Mrs. Clarence Wood, of this city, and Miss
Josephine Marshall of White Hall. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday

Ladys Marshall Graves, 94, of Crozet passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at
Winterhaven Assisted Living in Charlottesville, Virginia. Born on August 23,
l913, in Batesville, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Lizzie S,
Marshall. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Leslie Graves Sr.; an
infant daughter; two sons, A. Leslie Graves Jr. and Kenneth C. Graves; two
sisters, Alma Tomlin and Daisy Gibson; and four brothers, Leonard, William,
Gordon, and Lewis Marshall; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is survived
by one daughter, Anne G. Hunter of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one son, Bobby D.
Graves and his wife, Barbara, of Afton; one sister, Hannah Gibson; and one half
brother, George E. Marshall and his wife, Eleanor, both of Charlottesville; two
daughters-in-law, Helen C. Graves of Sanford, North Carolina and Mary P. Graves
of Nellysford; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two
great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews with a special niece that
she called her oldest daughter, Barbara Bradshaw of Crozet. She joined the
Batesville Methodist Church on August 2, 1925. She enjoyed being a homemaker,
but worked outside the home at times, she worked at C. H. Williams, Sears, and
Conagra, and she cared for the elderly at their homes. She had great faith and
was a gentle and caring person. She had a love for her garden and her flowers.
She crocheted beautifully and gave many items to her family and friends. The
family would like to express their appreciation to the Staff at Winterhaven and
Hospice of the Piedmont for their loving care. In lieu of flowers the family
suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Batesville United
Methodist Church, 6959 Plank Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903; or the Hospice of

Lether Lee Shifflett of Penn Laird, wife of Gilbert T. Shifflett, died Saturday
afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Shifflett had been ill for the
past six months and had been a patient in the hospital for 12 days. A daughter
of the late Charlie and Mary Davis Marshall she was born on July 28, 1890 at
Island Ford. She and Mr. Shifflett were married over 50 years ago and have spent
practically their entire married life in the Penn Laird section. She was a
member of the Methodist Church. Beside her husband, an employee at Ford Motor
Co. in Harrisonburg. She is survived by two children, Russell E. Shifflett of
Springfield and Emory Shifflett of Penn Laird; nine grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Charles E. Raines of Penn Laird, Mrs.
Lillie P. Sellers of Shippensburg, Pa., and Mrs. Lee Thompson of Mt. Valley; and
two brothers, T. J. and C. H. Marshall, both of Island Ford. A funeral service
will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home

Lillie Herring Marshall, 101, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1988,
in a local nursing home. She was born March 30, 1887, in Greene County, daughter
of the late Alfred Herring and Alsie Shifflett Herring. She was the wife of the
late James T. Marshall. Surviving are two sons, William Marshall of Baltimore,
Vernie Marshall of Charlottesville; a daughter, Helen Armentrout of
Harrisonburg; a sister, Mamie Marshall of Charlottesville; 19 grandchildren, 41
great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren, and a number of
step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Joseph, Hugh, and

Louis W. "Jack" Marshall, 86, of Elkton, died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 8, 2015, surrounded by his
loving family. Jack was born July 25, 1928, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Charles H. and
Addie L. Marshall. He had previously been employed by North & South Lines and retired from Smith Transfer in
1986 after 20 years of service. He took great joy in his family and grandchildren. He was a lifelong farmer in
the Rocky Bar area and enjoyed gardening, fishing, and taking his dogs for their daily run to the river. On
Oct. 23, 1948, he married Frances McDonaldson, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his
children, Louis W. (Louie) Marshall Jr. and wife, Carolyn (Jamie) of Bridgewater, Sandra K. Smith and husband,

Margaret Ann Marshall, 59, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at
her residence. Born Nov. 3, 1943, in Madison County, she was the daughter of the
late Cicero and Gertie Breeden Taylor. She was a gift from God for so many
people. She loved everyone and if she was able, she would help anyone in need.
She was very loved and will be missed by many. God needed an angel that would
come and help him, so he called on Margaret because he knew she would get the
job done. She has gone to heaven to join her granddaughter, Tiffany Renee
Fisher; her mother, Gertie Breeden Taylor; her father Cicero Taylor; and her
three sisters, Mary Evelyn Taylor, Peggy Ann Taylor and Agnes Louise Rodriquez.
She is survived by three loving daughters, Velda Jean Conley of Charlottesville,
Robin Loretta Bryant of Palmyra, and Ann Marie Marshall of Charlottesville; 11
grandchildren, Melissa, Chrissy, B.J., Jay, Joshua, Roger, Corey, Tyler, Lance,
Henry and Kevin; five great-grandchildren, Keith, Alanna, Dylan, Kierstyn and
Cameron; her nephews and nieces, Glen, James, Chris, Loretta, Darin, Kim, Bo and
Pat; one very special cousin, Mary Ann Ronquest; and a sister, Susan Shifflett

Margaret L. "Lillian" Marshall,
95, of Elkton, passed away Monday, August 22, 2011, at her home. Mrs. Marshall
was born February 1, 1916, in Rockingham County near Elkton, and was the
daughter of the late Silas Joseph and Mollie Carickhoff Miller. In addition to
her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, George Kenneth
Marshall, a grandson, Derrick Marshall Foster, and a brother, Cyrus T. Miller.
Mrs. Marshall attended various churches in the area, including the Upper Room
Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her family and friends, horseback riding
(until her early 80s), sewing, crocheting and gardening. On August 1, 1936, she
married Charles Leonard Marshall Sr., who preceded her in death on November 4,
1985. She is survived by a son, Charles L. Marshall Jr. and wife, Georgia, of
Elkton; two daughters, Joyce Wysong and husband, Bill, of Elkton, Mary
Huntingdon and husband, John P., of Spotsylvania County; daughter-in-law, Jane
Marshall of Elkton; eight grandchildren, Michael Marshall, Sonia Pulley, Mitzi
Norris, Dana Boller, George Kenneth Marshall Jr., J. Scott Marshall, Eric Foster

Pearl M. Marshall, 86, of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the UVA Medical
Center. Born March 28, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lillie Morris Houchens. She was preceded in
death by her husband, James Vernie Marshall; her stepfather, Lawrence Houchens; two sons-in-law and one
grandson. Mrs. Marshall was retired from UVA Medical Center. Along with being a wife, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and homemaker she enjoyed camping, cooking, and most of all
spending time with family. Surviving her are her four daughters, Helen Marshall of Charlottesville, Ethel
Hutchinson and husband, Bill, of Gordonsville, Shirley Irving of Gordonsville, and Rachel Collier of Crozet;
one son, Melvin Marshall and wife, Teresa, of Scottsville; and two stepsons, Jimmy Marshall and wife, Linda,

ROBERT DURRETTE MARSHALL
Robert Durrette Marshall, 87, of Dyke, Virginia, died Thursday, July 13, 2006.
He was born in Dyke, Virginia on May 10, 1919, a son of the late, Robert Clark
Marshall and Gertrude Vernon Marshall. Robert was a simple man who lived a
simple life and was a caring a giving person, who loved his family and friends
dearly. He was a Army veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his
daughters, Nancy Tardiff and her husband, Dan, of Moneta, Barbara McNamara and
her husband, John, of Salem; his grandchildren, MacKenzie McNamara, Jacob
Gilbert, Keeley McNamara, Laura McNamara, all of Salem; a niece, Maxine Ritchie
of Harrisonburg; cousin, Stanley Morris of Stanardsville; special friends, Lois
and Leon Shifflett and Glenda and Mark Shifflett all of Dyke, Virginia. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Arline Mundy. A
memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2006, at Mount
Olivet United Church of Christ with the Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating. A reception
will follow the service at the Dyke Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of
flowers donations may be made to Dyke Volunteer Fire Department, Dyke, VA 22935

ROBERTA MARSHALL SULLIVAN
Roberta "Mom" Marshall Sullivan, 81, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Jan. 28,
2002, at a local hospital. Born Sept. 9, 1920, in Albemarle County, she was the
daughter of the late William A. and Mary Beddows Marshall. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Homer Sullivan, a daughter, Gretchen, and a son, John
L. Sullivan. She was retired from the University of Virginia Hospital, where she
was an environmental health specialist. She is survived by her children, Robert
Garrison and his wife, Patty, of Leesville, S.C., Wesley Sullivan, Kathy
Frazier, Debbie Wade and her husband, Charlie, Donna Hoy and her husband,
Ronnie, and Sandra Sullivan, all of Charlottesville; 12 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren; and a special son, "Bo" Shaffer. A funeral service will be
held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hill & Wood Chapel, with Chaplain Suzanne
Hilton-Smith officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive
friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. The family would like

Susie Powell Marshall, 78, of Dyke passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2007.
She was born in Dyke, Virginia, on April 5, 1928, a daughter of the late
Benjamin Carroll Powell and Gracie Anne Morris Powell. Susie was also preceded
in death by her husband, Charles Lewis Marshall; and two brothers, Roy Powell
and Ashby Powell. She is survived by two sons, Charles D. Marshall, Donnie C.
Marshall and his wife, Patricia, all of Dyke; three brothers, Frank Powell and
his wife, Delores, of Boonesville, Cecil Powell and his wife, Lonney, of Stuarts
Draft, Ben Powell and his wife, Barbara, of Charlottesville; one sister, Irene
Carver and her husband, Gene, also of Charlottesville; three grandchildren,
Tyler Marshall, Samantha Marshall and Jason Marshall. Susie was employed for
many years with Frank IX and Sons. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend
Jim Jinks officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church

ELKTON -
The Rev. Thomas John Marshall, 79, a retired evangelist of Rt. 2, Elkton died of
an apparent heart attack Sunday morning. He was stricken at his home and was
dead on arrival at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Marshall was born Oct. 18,
1894 at Island Ford and was a son of the late Charles Henry and Mary Jane Wood
Marshall. He lived most of his life in the Island Ford-Elkton area. Mr. Marshall
retired 13 years ago as a minister and evangelist with the Church of God. He
also was a veteran of World War I. On Aug. 29, 1947, he married Pauline Kincaid
Lilly, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles Leonard and John Wayne
Marshall, both of Rt. 2, Elkton; two daughters, Mrs. Owen Lam of Rt. 2, Elkton
and Mrs. Douglas Gibson of Grottoes; a step-son, Roy L. Lilly of Harrisonburg;
three sisters, Mrs. Charles Raines of Penn Laird, Mrs. Mart sellers of
Chambersburg, Pa. and Mrs. Lee Thompson of Keezletown; a brother, Charles H.
Marshall Jr. of Rt. 2, Elkton; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The
funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral
Home by the Rev. Lillard Gentry and the Rev. Albert Hargis. Burial will be in
East Lawn Memorial Gardens. The body is at the Lindsey Funeral Home, where the
family will receive friends 7:30 -- 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Timothy I. Marshall, 38, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, September 11,

Mrs. John Z. Marshall
RICHMOND - Mrs. Victoria Shifflett Marshall, 83, widow of John Z. Marshall, died
at her home in Richmond yesterday. Born April 28, 1881, in Albemarle County, she
was the daughter of the late Givens and Partheni Gardner Shifflett. She is
survived by three sons, John W. Marshall, both of White Hall, George E. Marshall
and Carl L. Marshall, both of Richmond; three daughters, Mrs. Gilbert Mowbray,
Mrs. Pearl Wood, and Mrs. J.H. Whittaker, all of Richmond; six grandchildren and
12 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mt.
Moriah Methodist Church at White Hall, with burial in the church cemetery.

Virgie Lee Marshall, known to all who loved her as "Vee", 84, passed into
eternal peace on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at Hospice House of the Piedmont.
Born on February 15, 1936, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late
Broadus Marshall and Rebecca Morris Marshall. She was also preceded in death by
her five brothers, William B. Marshall, Charles Marshall, Bruce Marshall,
Franklin Marshall, and Jimmy Marshall; and three sisters, Mary Belle Collier,
Clarice Arnold, and Teenie Johnson. Vee enjoyed spending time with family and
friends, listening to music, collecting dolls and stuffed animals, shopping and
having her hair styled by Codie Burruss. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews,
other family members and friends to cherish her memory. A special thank you to
her devoted caregivers Michael Marshall, Kimberly Cashwell and Blue Ridge PACE.
The family also thanks All Points Christian Ministries, Midway Manor and Hospice
of the Piedmont for their continuous and loving support. A graveside celebration
of life service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2021, at the Riverview

VIRGINIA C. MARSHALL
Virginia C. Marshall "Mee-Ma", 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her
home on Park Street, Wednesday, February 4, 2009. She was born on June 8, 1914,
to the late Onslo and Katie Byrd Petty Cole in Halifax County, Virginia. She is
the widow of Harvey G. Marshall. She was also preceded in death by her three
sons, James F. "Jimmy", Robert H. "Bob", and Cecil Cole Marshall; and
granddaughter, Laura Kay Taylor. Mee-Ma lived a long and fulfilling life with
her family and friends. She touched the lives of many adults and children
through her Kiddie Corner Day Care and preschool that was operated for 35 years.
She was loved and respected by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived
by siblings, Jim Cole, Byrdie Gimbert; daughters, Kay Taylor, Nancy and her
husband, Ron Taylor; and a daughter-in-law, Charlotte Marshall. Also surviving
are grandchildren, Becky and her husband, Brad, Robbie, Mike, Kim and her
husband, Tony, Jeff and his wife, Margaret, Tammy and her husband, Tim, Ron and
his wife, Kerry, Brian and his wife, Shannon; great-grandchildren, Barbie,
Chris, Cory, Lydia, Danielle, Jacob, Ashlee, Meaghan, Brandon, Kevin, Shelby,
Brynn, Towler, Marshall, and Brooke; and two great great-grandchildren Caden and
Parker. The family thanks the wonderful staff at JABA Day Care for all of their
loving care for the past six years. Their staff and service is a true blessing
to this community. A special thank you to Linda Washington for her loving and
capable in home care, sometimes on very short notice. Services will be held 11
a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home chapel, with

VIRGINIA GARNETT MARSHALL
Mrs. Virginia Garnett Marshall, 84, of Barboursville, died Monday, June 27,
2005, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born March 25, 1921, in Charlottesville
Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert M. Garnett and Lenora Bledsoe
Garnett. Her husband was the late Simon S. Marshall. She was also preceded in
death by an infant daughter, Helen Louise Marshall; four sisters; and four
brothers. Mrs. Marshall was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and
retired from Blue Bell and Clarostat. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and loved to do for others. Her talent for cooking was
greatly admired by all. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret M. Crews and
her husband, Jerry, of Barboursville, Linda A. Matheny of Waynesboro; two sons,
Robert L. Marshall and his wife, Peggy, of Stanardsville, Randolph M. Marshall
and his wife, Irene, of Ruckersville; one sister, Dorothy G. Redmon and her
husband, Andrew, of Orange; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2005, in
the Graham cemetery, in Orange, conducted by Pastor David Kinghton. In lieu of

WAIDE HENRY MARSHALL SR.
STAUNTON — Waide Henry Marshall Sr., 73, husband of Catherine (Shifflett)
Marshall of 1808 First St. passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at Augusta
Health. He was born on April 8, 1938, in Churchville, a son of the late Samuel
Marshall and Nora (Back) Marshall. Mr. Marshall was a lifelong resident of the
Staunton area. He was employed with Herndon House Furnishings as a delivery
driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary
Martin and six brothers, Roscoe, Roy, George, Briscoe, Eugene and Clyde
Marshall. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Waide H. Marshall Jr.
and Donald Lynn Marshall both of Staunton; two daughters, Peggy Marshall and
Debbie Ayers both of Staunton; a stepson, Robert Lee Shifflett of Staunton; a
brother, Jessie Marshall of Waynesboro; eight grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren also survive. A graveside service will be conducted at 11
a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens by Pastor
Merle Dodson. The family will receive friends in the Mausoleum one hour prior to

WALTER LEWIS MARSHALL
Walter Lewis Marshall, 80, of Lexington, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at his home
following a short illness. Mr. Marshall was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Greene
County, and was a son of the late Joseph Andrew Marshall and Mamie Virginia
Herring Marshall. He was a graduate of Charlottesville High School and the
Jefferson School of Commerce in Charlottesville. A veteran of World War II, Mr.
Marshall served in the US Navy with the Merchant Marines throughout Europe, the
Mediterranean, the Near and Far East, and Russia. He was a 50-year member and
deacon at Manly Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington. Mr. Marshall opened
Rockbridge Auto Parts, Inc, in 1954, and retired in 2004. He was a 50 year
member and past president of the Lexington Lions Club, charter member and past
president of the Virginia Automotive Wholesale Association (VAWA), member and
past president of the Virginia Carolina Automotive Wholesale Association (VCAWA)
and a member of the Mountain City Masonic lodge No. 67 A.F. & A.M. for nearly 50
years. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved to golf and hunt. In addition
to his parents, Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by four brothers, Willard
Marshall, Gaines A. Marshall, George W. Marshall and Harry L. Marshall.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rose Marie Puckett Marshall of
Lexington; daughter & son-in-law, Donna and Bert Mabry of Lexington, daughter,
Sandra Roberts DeVito of WinstonSalem, N.C.; grandson, Jonathan W. Mabry of
Charlottesville; granddaughter, Ashley Slawter and her husband, Mark; and one
great-granddaughter, Aubrey Slawter all of Wake Forest, N.C. Funeral services
will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at the Manly Memorial
Baptist Church with Dr. J. Michael Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in
the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial

WESLEY L. MARSHALL
Wesley L. Marshall of West Street died at an early hour this morning at the
University Hospital, following an illness of two weeks. He was a native of
Greene County, son of the late Benjamin F. and Fannie Detamore Marshall, and was
66 years of age. He was twice married, first to Miss Lula Garrison of this city.
Of that union, five children survive – Richard T. Marshall of Richmond, Mrs.
Fannie Craig, of Schuyler, and Samuel E., James F. and Robert L. Marshall all of
this city. There are 13 grandchildren. Mr. Marshall’s second wife, who was Miss
Mary Estes of Greene County died on February 18, 1942. Mr. Marshall also leaves
one brother, Benjamin L. Marshall, of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Eva
Harlowe of Stanardsville, Miss Lizzie Marshall and Mrs. Mary Watson, both
residents of Greene, and Mrs. Bessie Avery of Wakefield. Funeral arrangements
have not been completed.

GROTTOES. Nov. 30 — Funeral services for William Henry Marshall, 55, will be
held from the Pentecostal Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. John W.
Morris officiating. The body will be taken to the church an hour before the
service. Burial will be in the Port Republic cemetery. He died unexpectedly at
his home at 6:45 Monday night. He was a son of James K. and Georgia Shiflett
Marshall. His first with, the former Myrtle Shifflett, preceded him in death. He
is survived by his second wife the former Ethel Morris, and ten children: Mrs.
Geraldine Ralls, Rosedale, Pa.: Mrs. Inez M. Diehl, Grottoes; Mrs. Yvonne Shook,
Miami, Fla.: Mrs. Gladys Via, of Dooms: Mrs. Earl Lowman, Annapolis, Md.: Ivan
and James Marshall, Chester, Pa.: Delmar Marshall, Waynesboro; Sylvester
Marshall, Charlottesville. He also leaves a half-brother, Christopher Shifflett,
of Nortonsville. The body is now at the L. M. Koontz funeral home and will be
moved to the Marshall residence Wednesday at two o'clock. Pallbearers and flower
bearers are asked to meet at the church at two o'clock, and relatives are asked
to meet at the Marshall home at two o'clock. The pallbearers will be: Thomas
Mosie ,Leon Allen, Charles Good, Newton Jenkins, Floyd Trobaugh and Leggeth
Dean. Flower bearers will be Hester Via, Joan Baber, Betty Via, Janet Roach and
Delores Kesner.

William Marshall Shifflett, Sr., 60, of Prince Frederick, died September 15,
1983 at Calvert memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife Mary E. Shifflett;
three sons, William M. Shifflett Jr., Michael A. Shifflett and Donald E.
Shifflett; three brothers, James Shifflett, Everett Shifflett and Robert
Shifflett; five sisters, Louise Dalrymple, Loraine McKnew, Virginia Halterman,
Mary Halterman and Betty Morris; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were
Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at Full Gospel Assembly of Good Church with Pastor William
Davis officiating. Interment was at Southern memorial Gardens with military
honors. Active pallbearers were Percy Lee Grieson, Ben Cochrane, James Robinson,
Glenwood Carroll, Thomas Outman and Williams Weems. Honorary pallbearers were
Veteran of Foreign war members, Gene Wood, Junior Stafford, Robert Buck, Frank
Johnson, Floyd Bowley, Robert Anderson and William Hooper. Arrangements were by

ZEAN MARSHALL SHIFFLETT
Zean Marshall Shifflett, 87, Elkton, died November 18, 1994, at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. He had been ill for several months. Mr.
Shifflett was born March 6, 1907, in Greene County and was the son of the late
Andrew Jackson and Laura Morris Shifflett. He had been employed in the
maintenance department for the Town of Elkton until his retirement. He attended
the Shenandoah Baptist Church. In 1926, he married the former Nellie Ann
Meadows, who died March 22, 1970. Surviving are three sons, Harvey L., Alva L.,
and Bobby A. Shifflett, all of Elkton; 15 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren. The Rev. Hudson Nuckols will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m.
Monday at the Shenandoah Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Jollets Cemetery,
Page County. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral
Home in Elkton, where the family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday. Friends
may also call at the homes of his children at any time. Memorial contributions
