FRANKLIN DOUGLAS MERICA
Franklin Douglas "Doug" Merica, 75, of Elkton, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at
his home. Mr. Merica was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Rockingham County, and was the
son of the late Nellie Merica Breeden. He attended school in Elkton and served
in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of Woodman of the
World and retired from McQuay-Westinghouse as a machine operator. Survivors
include his wife, Peggy Hensley Merica, whom he married June 16, 1956; a son,
Steve Merica of Elkton; a daughter, Teresa Shifflett of Elkton; a sister, Margie
Collier of Ruckersville; two grandchildren and one great-grandson. The Rev.
Wayne Wright will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Mount Olivet
Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in
McGaheysville. The family will receive friends from 7-8 this evening at the
Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Merica home at any

HILDA VIRGINIA MERICA
Hilda Virginia Merica, 78, of Luray and formerly of Stanley, died Thursday,
Sept. 25, 2008, at MontVue Nursing Home in Luray. Mrs. Merica was born Jan. 24,
1930, in Shenandoah and was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Willie
Vernel Breeden Sampson. She had worked as a textile worker at Luray Textile. She
was a member of Newport Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Noah Calvin Merica. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Sue Taylor of
Stanley and Linda Lou Adkins of Shenandoah; a son, Edward Calvin Merica of
Stanley; four sisters, Mary Charlotte Weeks of Grottoes, Rebecca Ann Hudson of
Grottoes, Carrie Moyers of Harrisonburg and Eleanor May of Elkton; four
brothers, James Sampson of Shenandoah, Harry T. Sampson of Shenandoah, Franklin
Sampson of Harrisonburg and Johnnie Sampson of Penn Laird; three grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren. The Rev. Walter E. Lundblad will conduct the
funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will be in
the Newport Christian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
today at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the home of the daughters

HOWARD HUNTER MERICA
Howard Hunter Merica, 89, of McGaheysville, Va., passed away on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at his home. He was
born in Page County on Dec. 13, 1925, and was the son of the late Harvey Hunter Merica and Nora Lee Breeden
Merica. Howard was in the armed services during World War II. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years,
Julia Lam Merica, whom he married on May 25, 1946. He lived in Maryland for 40 years and retired from the
University of Maryland. He was an active member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed playing the
harmonica and traveling. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five brothers, Noah Merica,
Floyd Merica, James Merica, Carl Merica and Lynwood Merica; and one sister, Frances Turner. He is survived by
a brother, Melvin Merica and wife, Mildred, of College Park, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Blanche Merica of
College Park, Cathaline Hensley of Elkton, and Eva Kyger of Mount Crawford; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2015, at the Elkton Pentecostal Church with Pastor
Travis Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends
Sunday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Memorial gifts may be made to the Elkton

JOHN LEON MERICA
John Leon Merica, 72, of Elkton, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Aug. 24,
2008. He was born in Page County on Nov. 1, 1935, and was the son of the late
John Henry and Jessie Lee Meadows Merica. He was also preceded in death by one
son, Andy Clinton Merica Sr., and one grandson, Timothy Gaylon-Leon Warner. Leon
retired in January 2008 as a crane operator for Shirley Contracting Co., LLC in
Lorton, Va., but worked 45 years for Moore Brother’s Construction in Verona and
Richard Stepp Salvage Yard part time for a number of years. He was a member of
Avis O. Comer VFW Post 8613, Shenandoah Moose Lodge 2176, Elkton Eagles, N.R.A.,
Elkton Jr. Order 1190, Furnace United Methodist Church Congregation and F.U.M.C.
Men’s Group and sang in the Choir. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was devoted to
his wife, children and family. Leon loved to fellowship with family and friends
and never met a stranger. He was proud of his heritage and always bragged on his
numerous grandchildren. On June 15, 1960, he married Marie Katherine Meadows,
who survives. He is also survived by four daughters, Teresa “Terry” Merica and
fiancé, Jeff Morris, Frances “Sissy” Hensley and husband, Neil, Jaime Shifflett
and husband, Shannon, all of Elkton, and Tina Warner and husband, Doug, of
Grottoes; two sons, Keith Merica and wife, Terri, and Calvin “C.J.” Merica and
wife, Tanya, both of Elkton; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Eugene Kenneth Merica, Melvin Ray
Merica, Roy Dale (Buddy) Merica, all of Elkton; five sisters, JoAnn (Judy)
Dovel, Margie Lee Dean, Phyllis Jean (Dee) Breeden, Linda Faye Eppard, Delores
Juanita (Debbie) Hensley, all of Elkton. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the Furnace United Methodist Church near Elkton with
the Rev. Nona F. Allen and the Rev. Michael Plasters officiating. Burial will
follow in the Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. The family will receive friends 6 to 8
p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the

MARY ANN MERICA
The funeral for Mary Ann Merica, 88, Route
1, Elkton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bear Lithia Baptist Church in
Elkton. Pastor Mark Leatherman will conduct the service. Burial will follow at
the Koontz family cemetery near Elkton. Mrs. Merica died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998,
at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where she had been a patient
since February 15. She was born Nov. 9, 1909, in Rockingham County and was a
daughter of the late Alexander J. and Fanny Knight Williams. She was a lifetime
member of Bear Lithia Baptist Church. Earlier in her life, she worked as a
seamstress for the Casey Jones Factory, formerly in Elkton. On Jan. 27, 1930,
she married Reginald M. "Tucker" Merica, who died Feb. 6,1981. Surviving are one
son, Alvah R. Merica, Elkton; one sister, Martha Shifflett, Elkton; two
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and six
great-great-stepgrandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-8 this
evening at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home in Elkton. Memorial contributions

MARY MABEL MERICA
Mary Mabel Hardesty Merica, 85, formerly of Elkton, died Thursday, Feb. 19,
2004, at the Evergreen Nursing Care Center in Stanardsville. Mrs. Merica was
born May 26, 1918, in Picaway County, Ohio, and was the daughter of the late
Newton and Myrtle Weast Hardesty. She later moved to the Rockingham County area,
where she spent most of her life. She was a member of the Furnace United
Methodist Church, where she attended in her earlier years. She was employed at
Swift’s Poultry Plant and Sunset Pastry Shop, both in Harrisonburg. On July 13,
1934, she married Talley Morrison Merica, who preceded her in death in 1966.
Surviving are a son, John Newton Merica of France; two daughters, Betty Lou
Robson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Hester Louise "Sue" LaMont of Keymar, Md.; six
grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Johnny Hensley will conduct a
graveside funeral 11 a.m. Saturday in the Koontz Family Cemetery in the Naked
Creek area of Page County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

MILLARD MARTIN MERICA
Millard Martin Merica, 68, formerly of Elkton, died Jan. 7, 2006, in Temple
Hills, Md. Mr. Merica was born June 26, 1937, in Rockingham County, and was the
son of the late Roy O. and Edna K. Offenbacker Merica. He graduated from Elkton
High School and was a self-employed housepainter. Mr. Merica was preceded in
death by his wife, Peggy Ann Dean Merica, and two brothers, Leroy W. Merica and
Emory O. Merica. Survivors are two sisters, Darlene Merica of Bowie, Md., Janet
Moon of Edgewater, Md., and numerous nephews and nieces. A graveside service
will be conducted 12:00 noon Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the Mount Olivet
Cemetery in McGaheysville, Va. with the Rev. Curtis Hensley officiating.

SCOTT CARMELINO MERICA
Scott Carmelino Matacia, 36, of Keswick, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, as result
of an automobile accident. Born July 25, 1969, in Charlottesville, he was the
son of Alfred C. Matacia of Charlottesville and Barbara Lynch Matacia of
Virginia Beach. Scott was a graduate of Albemarle County High School and
Lynchburg College. He is married to Karen Roudabush Matacia, who also died in
the accident. Scott is survived by his mother and father; a sister, Synora
"Sandy" Gale Matacia of Rhode Island; a niece, Michelle L. Cote of Virginia
Beach; and three uncles, William A. Lynch, Clyde W. Lynch and Kenneth W. Lynch,
all of Charlottesville. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1,
2006, at Cherry Avenue Christian Church with Mr. Harv Ayers officiating.
Interment will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens. The family will receive
friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2006, at Cherry Avenue
Christian Church. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions
be made to a local S.P.C.A. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of

On November 19, 1970, Tallie C., of Seminole, Fla., formerly of Ellicott City,
Md., beloved husband of Stell Merica (nee Shifflett) and devoted father of

Howard J., Clarence W., and Everett E. Merica, brother of Mrs. Buelah F. Stull.
