AUBREY CALVIN RAYNES
Aubrey Calvin "Cal" Raynes, 78, of New Carrollton, Md., died Monday, March 7,
2005, at his home. Mr. Raynes was born July 23, 1926, in the Lynnwood community
of Rockingham County, and was a son of the late E. Lester and Eva Mobray Raynes.
He was a sales manager for B&B Automotive and was a Navy veteran of World War
II. In June 1950, he married Janet Marie McCallister, who survives. In addition
to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Raynes of New Carrollton;
three sons, Gregory Calvin Raynes of Riverdale, Md., Henry Clay Raynes of Deale,
Md., and Timothy Lee Raynes of Greenbelt, Md.; two sisters, Laura Mathis of New
Market and Salley Jensen of Grottoes; two brothers, Daniel Raynes of
Charlottesville and Luther "Pat" Raynes of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren. The Rev. Jason Raynes will conduct the funeral 1 p.m.
Friday at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, where the family will receive
friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will follow at the Mount Olivet
Cemetery in McGaheysville. Memorial contributions may be made to Capital

GERALDINE VIRGINIA RAYNES
Geraldine Virginia Raynes, 91, of Grottoes, passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2021,
at her home. Geraldine was born in Waynesboro on June 6, 1930, a daughter of the
late Gertrude (Raynes) and Herman Harris. She worked as a seamstress at Compton
in Waynesboro for over 20 years. She later worked for Rocco in Harrisonburg for
over 15 years, but most would remember her from the Grottoes Salvation Army as
well as her time spent at the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department volunteering
and playing Bingo. She was united in marriage to Claude Everette Raynes, who
preceded her in death in 1993. Geraldine is survived by sons, Richard Everette
Raines and wife, Sally, of Stuarts Draft and Michael "Steve" Raines and wife,
Kathy, of Grottoes; sisters, Mary Meeks of Dooms, Arlene Meeks and husband,
Butch, of Dooms, Peggy Shifflett and husband, Herbert, of Crimora and Doris
Damern and husband, Ray, of Waynesboro; brothers, Ronnie Harris and wife, Wendi,
of Waynesboro and Sonny Harris and wife, Kathleen, of Waynesboro; five
grandchildren, Amy Raines, Amanda Sheets and husband, Patrick, Amber McDaniel
and husband, Steven, Kevin Raines and wife, Kristy, and Kimberly Eutsler and
husband, Bobby; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby
Harris. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29,
2021, at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. A funeral service will be
conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home in Grottoes with
Pastors Ronnie Harris and Kevin Harris officiating. Burial will follow at
Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

REPUBLIC - Goldie Morris Raynes, 72, of Port Republic died Monday morning at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since May 4. Mrs.
Raynes was born Dec. 10, 1908 at Lynnwood and was a daughter of the late Richard
and Sophronia Sipe Morris. She was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church
at Lynnwood. On Sept, 7, 1925, she married William H. Raynes, who survives. Also
surviving are a son, Robert L. Raynes of Port Republic; four sisters, Nellie
Edwards, Beulah Royer and Addie Gibson, all of Port Republic, and Veda Gibson of
Grottoes; three brothers, Alfred B., Berryman R., and Hunter C. Morris, all of
Port Republic; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral
will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church by the
Rev. Louis Breidenback. Burial will be in Port Republic Cemetery. The family
will receive friends at the Raynes home. The body is at the W. H. Kyger Funeral
home, where friends may call.

JAMES EDWARD RAYNES
PORT REPUBLIC - James Edward Raynes, 78, a
retired farmer and state highway employee, died unexpectedly at his home at Port
Republic early Thursday morning (April 28, 1966). Mr. Raynes was a son of the
late Zachariah and Alice (Roadcap) Raynes and was born June 5, 1887 at Port
Republic, where he spent his entire life. He was a member of Grace Memorial
Episcopal Church. On Jan. 13, 1915, he married the former Julia Ann Shifflett
who survives. Besides his widow, he is survived by four sons, James E. Jr. of
Astutula, Fla., Howard Lee of Lancaster, Pa., and Luther V., and Morris J.
Raynes both of Port Republic; four daughters, Mrs. Kyle Duvall of Astutula,
Fla., Mrs. Robert Brown of Lancaster, Pa., Mrs. Herbert Via of Baltimore and
Mrs. Charles Smith of Grottoes; 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Etta Raynes of Port Republic, Mrs. James
Murray of Mt. Crawford, Mrs. Myrtle Morris and Mrs. Nora Morris, both of
Grottoes and Mrs. Alice Morris of Staunton, and a brother, Morris J. Raynes of
Hershey, Pa. The body was moved from the W. H. Kyger Funeral Home to the Raynes
home this afternoon to remain until 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The funeral will be
conducted at three p.m. Sunday at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church by the Rev.
Richard J. Sander Jr. Burial will be in Port Republic Cemetery. The family will
meet at the Raynes home at 2:30 pm. Sunday. Pallbearers will be Gordon
Alexander, George Harnsberger, Grover Pittman, William Dinsmore, Bowman Rexrode,
Thomas Craig, John Jay and Silas Nicholas

JETTA HAMMER RAYNES
Jetta Hammer Raynes passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020, at Harrisonburg Health
and Rehab. She was born July 17, 1923, to Jesse Edward and Rosa Dean Hammer.
Jetta was the oldest of 18 children. On Nov. 16, 1946, she was united in
marriage to Robert H. Raynes, who preceded her in death in June 2000. Also
preceding her in death were her sisters, Janet Roach, Mareta Marshall, Doris
Helfrich and Rosalyn Pryce and her brothers, Wampler, John, Bernard, Owen,
Rodney, William (Billy) and Doug. Her surviving family members are daughters,
Jacinta Weaver (Jim) and Lynn-Dell Raynes; a son, R.H. Raynes Jr. (Donna); three
granddaughters, Tiffany Haugen (Kalen), Brittany Knight (Brad), and Tina Raynes;
nine great-grandchildren, Jaden Shifflett, Brooklen Shifflett, Jared Knight,
Kaitlen Knight, Tristin Sawyer, Dustin Sawyer, Emmi Haugen, Hanna Haugen and
Hina Haugen; sisters, Wanda Comer and Margie Mayes (Ronnie) and brothers,
Roland, Mensel (Dorothy), Larry (Sandy) and Randy (Bonnie). Honoring Jetta's
request, there will not be a formal viewing or funeral service. Burial will be

JOHN WILLIAM RAYNES JR.
John William Raynes Jr., 59, of 7565 Dunston Drive, Hayes, Va., died
unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, April 5, 2006, at his home. John was born
Sept. 15, 1946, in Rockingham County, Va., the son of John William Sr. and
Bertha Morris Raynes. After serving four years with the U.S. Navy as a dental
technician, he attended James Madison University receiving a B.S. Degree with
concentrations in English and Dramatic Arts. In 1973, he began his career at
Gloucester High School as an English teacher. In 1975, he became the director of
the Drama Department at Gloucester High School. He taught for over 32 years in
that position and was the Chairman of the Gloucester High School Fine Arts
Department at the time of his death. John was very active in the community
having helped organize the Middle Peninsula Community Concert Association and
served as their staging and technical director for 27 years. He was also a
member of the Peninsula Community Theatre Board of Directors for over 25 years
and served as the Secretary of the Board for over 15 years. During John’s
30-year affiliation with PCT, he directed over 30 productions, served as the
Lighting Chair for over 20 years. He was instrumental in the re-organization of
PCT. He designed and oversaw the renovations of the Village Theatre, PCT’S
current home. John was the Co-Chair of the Season Membership Committee and
served as the Co-Chair of the Children’s Theatre Wing of PCT. John was preceded
in death by his father, John W. Raynes Sr. and is survived by his mother, Bertha
M. Raynes, a resident of Loyalton of Harrisonburg, 2101 Dreyerle Ave.,
Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. He is also survived by long time friend, Howard L.
Hollingsworth, several aunts, uncles, cousins, loving friends and a host of
former students. A private interment will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens
in Harrsionburg, Va. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

JOHN WILLIAM RAYNES SR.
John William Raynes Sr., 85, formerly of Port Republic, died Thursday, June 16,
2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, where he had been a
patient for the past week. Mr. Raynes was born Nov. 13, 1919, in Port Republic,
and was the son of the late Jacob Franklin and Gertie Morris Raynes. He served
in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American
Legion. He was a member of Mill Creek Church of the Brethren and retired from
Reynolds Metal in Grottoes as a safety engineer. Survivors include his wife,
Bertha Mae Morris Raynes of Loyalton of Harrisonburg; a son, John William Raynes
Jr. of Gloucester; and a brother, Douglas F. Raynes of Harrisonburg. The Rev. A.
Lee Kinsey will conduct a private graveside service today at Eastlawn Memorial
Gardens. Arrangements are by the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Judy R. Raynes, 76, of Grottoes, passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at Sentara
RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg. Judy was born in Harrisonburg on March 16,
1943, a daughter of the late Merle Morris Raines. Judy was a member of Grace
Memorial Episcopal Church, where she was involved in various activities
including the Altar Guild, playing the piano, organ and singing in the choir.
She enjoyed the companionship of family and friends and never missed an
opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren. She is survived by two
daughters, Jessica Preston and husband, Christopher, of Mount Crawford and
Annette Dofflemyer and husband, Timothy, of Port Republic; four grandchildren,
William Preston and wife, Brittany, Matthew Dofflemyer, Alexander Preston and
fiancée, Tomi Hensley, and Elizabeth Dofflemyer. She was preceded in death by
her brother, Gregory "Bud" Raines. Burial will be private. The family will
receive friends Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Grace Memorial

Julia "Kathleen" Raynes Via, 74, of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Port
Republic, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Manicure Ruxton Nursing Home in
Towson, Md. Mrs. Via was born Feb. 28, 1928, in Port Republic, and was a
daughter of the late James and Julia Shifflett Raynes. She graduated from Port
Republic High School and was a homemaker. She lived her early life in Port
Republic and had lived in Baltimore, Md. since 1950. In May 1947, she married
Herbert H. Via of Grottoes, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Larry
Via, Randy Via, and Ricky Via, all of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Donna Gross of
Hampstead, Md.; two sisters, Edith Brown of Lancaster, Pa., and Betty Smith of
Grottoes; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews. Mrs. Rosa Lee Weaver will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Wednesday
at the Port Republic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 this
evening at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home.

Mrs. Julie Shifflett Raynes, 67, of Port Republic, died Saturday at Baltimore
City Hospital. She had been visiting her daughter in Baltimore when she became
ill and was hospitalized July 24. Mrs. Raynes was the daughter of the late James
F. and Mary Smith Shifflett and was born Oct. 13, 1896 in Smithfield, N.C. She
had spent the majority of her life in Port Republic. She was a member of Port
Republic Methodist Church. On Jan 13, 1915 she married James Edward Raynes, who
died April 28, 1966. She is survived by four sons, James E. Raynes of Astutula,
Fla., Howard Lee Raynes of Lancaster, Pa., and Luther Vernon, and Morris Jarrels
Raynes both of Port Republic; four daughters, Mrs. Kyle Duvall of Astutula,
Fla., Mrs. Robert J. Brown of Lancaster, Pa., Mrs. Herbert Via of Baltimore and
Mrs. Charles Smith of Grottoes; 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers, James F. Shifflett of Waynesboro and Robert
Shifflett of Grottoes, and five sisters, Mrs. Zetta Kyger of Port Republic, Mrs.
Martha Crawford of Grottoes, Mrs. Ethel Rimel of Littletown, Pa., and Mrs. Edith
Poole and Mrs. Margaret Snell of Harrisonburg. The funeral will be conducted 11
a.m. Tuesday at Port Republic Methodist Church by the Rev. Huron G. Collins.
Burial will be in Port Republic Cemetery. Relatives will meet 10:30 a.m. Tuesday

Kenneth Wayne Raynes, 53, of Elkton, died July 13, 2005, at the University of
Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Raynes was born December 4,
1951, in Elkton, and was the son of Minnie Jerleen Shifflett Raynes of Elkton,
and the late Lewis Randolph Raynes. He was a 1970 graduate of Montevideo High
School and was self-employed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid
NASCAR fan. On July 11, 1971, he married Teresa Campbell Raynes, who survives.
Besides his mother and wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth W. Raynes Jr.,
Elkton; a brother, Lewis R. (Randy) Raynes Jr., Elkton; a sister, Wanda Weaver,
Mount Crawford; two grandchildren, Natalie P. Raynes, Lillian C. Raynes. Mr.
Raynes was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Lee Raynes. The family will
receive friends tonight (Friday) 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in

LAURA MAE RAYNES MATHIAS
Laura Raynes Mathias, 84, of New Market died Thursday, Feb. 28 at Rockingham
Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mathias was born March 16, 1923, in Lynnwood, Va., and
was the daughter of the late Lester Lee and Eva Mowbray Raynes. She graduated
from Port Republic High School in 1940 and enrolled in Rockingham Memorial
Hospital's School of Nursing, where she was a member of the Nurses' Cadet Corps
during World War II and a member of the RMH Class of 1945. She worked as a
Registered Nurse (RN) at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Garfield Memorial in
Washington, D.C. She retired to raise her children and in later years, she
worked as an RN at Sunnyside and as an office nurse for Dr. A.W. Graves in Lacey
Springs, Va. On Aug. 16, 1946, she married Charles E. Mathias, who preceded her
in death on Jan. 23, 1986. She is survived by four daughters, Susan Mathias
Smith, Cheryl Long (Ron), Deborah Kipps (Douglas), Barbara Kipps (Dwight); six
grandchildren, Kristine Long Amidon, Katrina Long Gerald (Vu), Angela Kipps
Shifflett (James), Lee Kipps, Alisha Kipps, Ashton Kipps; two
great-grandchildren, Sabrina Gerald and Russell Gerald and one brother, Luther
"Pat" Raynes. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Calvin Raynes, Danny
Raynes, and Tom Tyler Raynes; and a sister, Sally Jensen. She became a member of
Manor Memorial United Methodist Church in New Market, Va., in 1946 and served as
a Sunday school teacher, was a member of the Women Society of Christian Service,
and sang in the choir, She had many varied interests which included reading,
taking care of her pets, going to church, and especially spending time with her
family. She and her late husband often vacationed with extended family to the
beach, and they gathered together every Sunday after church for lunch. She was
an excellent cook who kept the kitchen full of candy for the kids and no one
made more buttery mashed potatoes, better gravy, or sweeter iced tea. Family
visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 7 to 8:00 p.m. at the Theis
Funeral Home in New Market, Virginia. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on
Sunday, March 2, at the Manor Memorial United Methodist Church in New Market.
The Rev. Keith Mottley will officiate. Burial will follow at the Emmanuel
Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call any time of the home of Ron and Cherie

Lewis Randolph Raynes, 77, Elkton, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at his home
after battling cancer for two years. Mr. Raynes was born June 7, 1926, near
Lynwood in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Jacob Franklin and
Grace Randall Raynes. He retired from Hollister, Inc., in Stuarts Draft and was
a member of the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. His wife, Minnie Jerleen

Lewis Randolph “Randy” Raynes Jr., 51, of Elkton, died Nov. 26, 2008, at
Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Randy was born Aug. 4, 1957, in Harrisonburg, and
was the son of Minnie (Jerleen) Shifflett Raynes of Elkton, and the late Lewis
R. Raynes. Randy was a 1975 graduate of Montevideo High School and was a big
sports fan; the football Redskins, the baseball Cardinals and NASCAR’s Mark
Martin were his favorites. Besides his mother, Randy is survived by a daughter,
Amanda Morris, Elkton; a sister, Wanda Weaver and husband, Buddy, Mount
Crawford; sister-in-law, Teresa Raynes; a nephew, Kenny Raynes and wife,
Jennifer; great-nieces, Natalie and Lilly Raynes; special friends, Richard Shank
and wife, Sharon, Hobart Cressler, Gaither Hurt, all of Elkton. He was preceded
in death by two brothers, Kenneth Wayne Raynes, Donnie Lee Raynes. A funeral
service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home
in Elkton. The Rev. Stuart Wood, the Rev. Clyde Plum and Dan Breeden will

V "Sammy" Raynes, 63, of Grottoes died Sunday at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Raynes was born Jan. 13, 1925 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late
James E. and Julia Shifflett Raynes. Mr. Raynes had lived his entire life in
Port Republic and Grottoes. Surviving are three sisters, Edith R. Brown of
Lancaster, Pa., J. Kathleen Via of Baltimore and Betty J. Smith of Grottoes. A
graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday in Port Republic Cemetery

Warren David Raines, 31, of Route 1, Ruckersville, died June 7, 1991, at the
University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Mr. Raines was born
Jan. 26, 1960, and was a son of Lola Shifflett Raines of Ruckersville and the
late Edward Raines. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four sisters,
Madeline Shifflett and Doris Jean Deane, both of Stanardsville, Juraine
Shifflett of Earlysville and Wilma Bartley of Staunton; five brothers, Edward,
Judgie and Michael Raines, all of Ruckersville, Wayne Raines of Stanardsville
and Wesley Raines of Waynesboro. The Rev. Edwin “Buzzy” Deane will conduct the
funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque. Burial will be at
Ruckersville Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the
funeral home.

WILLIAM HENRY RAYNES
PORT REPUBLIC - William H. Raynes, 83, of Port Republic
died Tuesday evening at Camelot Hall Nursing Home in Harrisonburg where he had
been a patient since Oct. 31. Mr. Raynes had been a Rockingham County school bus
driver and custodian at Port Republic Elementary School. He was born near
Lynnwood April 3, 1903, and was a son of the late William H. and Francis
Shifflett Raynes. He was a member and former lay reader at Grace Memorial
Episcopal Church at Lynnwood. On Sept. 7 1926, he married the former Goldie
Morris. who died May 11, 1981. Surviving are a son, Robert L. Raynes of Port
Republic; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be
conducted 2 p. m. Thursday at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church by the Rev. Louis
Breitenbach. Burial will be in Port Republic Cemetery. The family will receive
friends at Robert Raynes' home at any time. The body is at the Kyger Pence
Funeral Home, where friends also may call. In lieu of flowers, the family has
asked that donations be made to the Grottoes Rescue Squad.

WILLIAM LARRY RAYNES
William Larry "Larry" Raynes, 65, of Lynnwood, died Sunday morning, Feb. 8,
2004, in his home. He was born Oct. 23, 1938, in Rockingham County, and was a
son of the late John Franklin and Aretta Morris Raynes. He was employed as a
mechanic at Rule VW for about 10 years, owned and operated Larry’s VW and
Foreign Car Repair in Grottoes, and was lastly employed by Weyers Cave Mobil. On
April 21, 1959, he married the former Irene Myers, who survives. In addition to
his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Larry "W.L."
and Sally Raynes Jr. of Harrisonburg and Jonathan Ellis and Donna Raynes of Port
Republic; two daughters and one son-in-law, Penny Elizabeth Raynes of Weyers
Cave and Tonya R. and Tommy Thompson of Grottoes; five granddaughters, Nicole,
Rachel, Katherine "Lainey", Chase, and Jordan; one grandson, Preston; and one
sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Sidney A. Morris Sr. of Grottoes. A number
of nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews also survive. He was preceded
in death by one brother, Earl Franklin Raynes, who died Nov. 19, 1965. Funeral
services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Mount
Olive Brethren Church in Pineville by the Rev. Fredric G. Miller. Burial will be
in the Port Republic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening
from 7 to 8 at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home near McGaheysville. Memorial
contributions may be made to either the Grottoes Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1187,
Grottoes, Va. 24441 or to the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 67,
Grottoes, Va. 24441.
