CARL ROACH
ALBEMARLE MAN LOSES HIS LIFE UNDER TRUCK
Violent death took Carl Roach, young countryman of Albemarle, in the very middle
of a laugh Sunday night. He was jesting with friends aboard a ton and a half
truck being driven by Lewis Garth at Longwood church near Earlysville, when a
rear dual wheel caught one dangling foot and threw him beneath. His head and
body were crushed as the wheel passed across him lengthwise and he was dead
before he could be carried a mile toward the hospital. Two of his companions on
the truck told Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Robert E. Taylor that Roach was
in good spirits and laughing and joking with them when he was pulled off the
flatbed truck body by the wheel. Riding with him were Prince, Fannie, Bessie,
Reva, Wilance, Ella and Tommy Shiflett and Edgar Garth.
