The Daily Progress, Charlottesville, VA, May 4, 1933
Octave Nelson Shiflett died Saturday night, April 29, 1933 at his home near Shelby. He was paralyzed April 21 while about his farm duties. At times he seemed to rally temporarily from the stroke, and there was hope of his recovery, as he was conscious and cheerful, until Saturday morning when he took a turn for the worst and lapsed into unconsciousness and passed away about 9 o'clock. All the children were at his bedside except his son, Herbert, who is a patient in Walter Reed hospital, Washington. Mr. Shiflett was a leading farmer of Madison County. He was active and industrious, a good manager and in independent of circumstances. He had an equitable temperment which permitted him to accept conditions as they arose. He never complained when yields were poor or prices low. He was intensely devoted to his family and fond of home and farm life. He was hospitable to a high degree and those who came under his rooftree were welcome with warmth which will always be with them. Unassuming he occupied a strong position within Madison Citizenry. he was good hearted and loyal to his family and his friends. Worthy trails of character predominated with him. Mr. Shiflett was a helpful member of Bethel Methodist church, Rochelle, for many years. Mr. Shiflett was born Feb. 7, 1859 and was therefore 74 years ? months and 22 days old. He was a son of the late Jared Shiflett. He was born in Rockingham county. His parents moved to Madison when he was 8 or 10 years old, on the farm now owned by his brother. Surviving him are his widow (nee Lucy R. Price) and these children. E. A. Shiflett, Shelby; N. W. Shiflett, Washington; Mrs. W. J. Collier, River Spring, Md.; W. H. Shiflett, at home; Mrs. C. G. His funeral Monday afternoon drew together a tremendous concourse from not only Madison and Greene, but adjourning counties as well. It was held at Bethel church. While the funeral cortege leaving the home was long already a great crowd had gathered at the church. This testified to the great esteem in which Mr. Shiflett was held in life. ODIE O. SHIFFLETT
The Daily Progress, Charlottesville, VA, Wed, May 28, 2014

Odie O. Shifflett October 2, 1925 - May 25, 2014 Pictured here with his wife, Mattie B. Shifflett, deceased 2 years ago. Odie joined the Marine Corp. at age 17. His father had to sign giving his permission. I asked him years later why did he enlist. He said his brother and many friends were overseas and he wanted to do his part. When he came home he learned the Plumbing and Heating trade under the G. I. bill. Later he went in business for himself. He had many of the same customers for 40 years. He thought of his customers as good friends. After doing one job for them no one ever asked how long it would take or how much it would cost, because they had found an honest man. After retiring many of them would invite him to have dinner with them. When his friends were ill, he would put a bathroom on the main floor, so they didn't have to climb the stairs, and would not accept any pay. He leaves three sons, Carroll W. Shifflett and his wife, Helen, Steve Shifflett and his wife, Peggy, and Glenn Shifflett and his wife, Irene. I had the privilege of knowing my father for 68 years, and he never said anything bad about anyone. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. There will be no funeral.
