Mount Carmel mourns loss of Shiflett
Popular student athlete passed away Sunday
On Monday, the students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School arrived to learn
of the sudden death of sophomore student-athlete Zack Shiflett. Zack passed away
Sunday night after spending the day at home with family and friends. A member of
the Mount Carmel community since pre-kindergarten, Zack has always been involved
in the parish and school’s athletic department. Zack began playing soccer in the
parish Athletic Association, a program he has returned to the last three fall
seasons to serve as a coach in the under-six and eight program. "Zack was a true
role model for our youngest people, not only did he teach them soccer basics,
but he played with them and made them smile," said Mount Carmel athletic
director Mike Naunton. Jim Gernhart whose two sons played for Zack referred to
him as, "the young man you’d hope your son’s would grow up to be." Zack’s
playing career went from our middle school team to earning a starting midfield
position on the junior varsity team his freshmen year. This fall, Zack traded in
his soccer cleats, and earned a starting position on the Cougars' varsity
volleyball team, for which he was elected captain. This past spring, Zack was a
member of the school’s lacrosse program. As a freshman, Zack earned a place on
the varsity team, where he ran with the second midfield. Cougar lacrosse coach
Don DiBlasi said that, "Zack always had a terrific attitude, doing whatever you
asked; he had the natural ability for a very hard shot." Teammate Robby O’Neill
referred to Zack as, "a leader on the field and he didn’t even realize it. He
was the funny guy on the team who would make you laugh, he made sports fun."
Zack is survived by his parents Brian and Carolyn Shiflett, and sister Stacey,
who graduated as a student athlete in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel class of
2008.
