Mordecai Shiflet was a veteran of the War of 1812 and on April 6, 1878 filed for a service pension from Louisa County. His address at that time was listed as Gordonsville, Virginia. The following information about Mordecai was extracted from his pension file at the National Archives: He volunteered at Orange County Courthouse on July 31, 1814. He had blue eyes, fair complexion, and was 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Mrs. Lucy Josephine Crawford, about 104, died at her home at Somerset, Wednesday, July 28, 1948. Funeral services were held from Preddy Funeral Home July 30 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. R. Stuart Grizzard, pastor of Orange Baptist Church, followed by burial in Graham Cemetery. ORANGE - Empire Bertley Morris, 92, a retired farmer died yesterday in a Gordonsville hospital. His wife is Mrs. Dora Brookman Morris of Orange. He was born Feb. 14, 1875, in Louisa County, Mr. Morris was a member of the Union Grove Christian Church of Eheart. Surviving are nine daughters, Mrs. Charles Bishop, Mrs. William Hensley of Charlottesville, Mrs. Luther Beam of Culpeper, Mrs. Tommie Southard of Montpelier Station, Mrs. Elvin Breeden, Mrs. Richard May, Mrs. Myrtle McGhee, Mrs. Hunter Corbin, and Mrs. Luther Racer all of Orange; a half brother, Frank Morris of Orange, 31 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren. MAE MORRIS MAY
Mae Morris May, 96, of Constitution Highway, Orange, Virginia, died Monday, September 3, 2007, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born September 26, 1910, in Madison County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Empire B. Morris and Dora Brookman Morris. She was also predeceased by her husband, R.E. "Dick" May; one son, Marvin D. "Billy" May; one granddaughter, Judi M. Johnson; one great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Payne; one brother, Carl Morris; and seven sisters, Mamie Bishop, Ethel Breeden, Cornellia Corbin, Nina Beahm, Frances Hensley, Ellen Southard and Myrtle Garton. She was a member of the North Pamunkey Baptist Church and was the retired owner and operator of May's Service Station. She is survived by two sons, Robert L. May and R.E. May Jr., both of Orange; eight grandchildren, Joan M. Wayland of Orange, Jane M. Eppard of Orange, Julia M. Elmore of Fredericksburg, Robert May II of Orange, Gloria M. Williams of Gordonsville, Billy May Jr. of Orange, Bruce May of Orange, and Brenda May of Lynchburg; 20 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Violet M. Racer of Orange. Funeral services will be held graveside at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the North Pamunkey Baptist Church Cemetery of Lahore, Virginia. The Reverend Henry Styron will officiate. The family will receive friends at their home anytime. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Pamunkey Baptist Church, 15109 Pamunkey Lane, Orange, VA 22960. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is in charge of arrangements.

FRANCES FAY MORRIS HENSLEY
Frances Fay Morris Hensley, 88, of Charlottesville died on Sunday, April 09, 2006, in a local care facility. Born March 7, 1918, in Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Empire B. Morris and Dora Brookman Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William H. Hensley; a daughter-in-law, Anne Hensley; seven sisters, Ellen Southard, Myrtle Garton, Mamie Bishop, Ethel Breeden, Cornelia Corbin, Estelle Morris, and Nina Beahm; and one brother, Carl Morris. Frances was a lifetime member of Monticello Wesleyan Church where she had served on the Church Board. She retired in 1979 from Sperry Marine after 19 years of service. Surviving her are a daughter, Marian H. Haden and her husband, Sonny, of Charlottesville; three sons, William L. Hensley of Gordonsville, Bobby C. Hensley and his wife, Mary, of Shallotte, North Carolina, and Harold E. Hensley and his wife, Sarah, of Charlottesville; two sisters, Mae May of Orange County and Violet Racer of Orange County; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Monticello Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Jim Moretz officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Monticello Wesleyan Church, 2001 Earlysville Road, Earlysville, VA 22936.

Katherine Brookman Chewning, 86, of Unionville, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Madison. She was born on April 4, 1914, in Orange County. She was a former employee of the Orange Silk Mill, a charter member of Mine Run Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Antioch Baptist Church of Orange. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lafayette James Chewning. She is survived by three daughters, Della Dodson of Unionville, Joyce L. Hudson of Front Royal and Anne C. Shifflet of Stanardsville; three sons, Thomas K. Chewning of Locust Grove, Alvin L. Chewning and Wayne J. Chewning, both of Unionville; two sisters, Cornelia Proffitt of Scottsville and Martha Harp of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; and 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home in Locust Grove, with the Rev. Terry Green officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Orange County. Pallbearers are Dwayne Chewning, Ray Brookman, Ross Hughes, Willie McDaniel, Wayne Miller and Ray Breeden. Mrs. Lillie Morris Berry, 84, of Orange, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Orange County Nursing Home. She was born August 22, 1924, in Orange County, a daughter of the late Bibb Morris and Elizabeth Brookman Morris. She was the wife of the late Lewis E. Berry. Mrs. Berry is survived by a daughter, Patricia Altman and her husband, Reese, of Orange; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Powell, Johnnie Powell, three brothers, Floyd Morris, Wallace Morris, and Ollie Morris; and two sisters, Grace Atkins and Frances Snow. Brown, Gordon N. Brown, Richard A. Brown, John B. Brown and Robert T. Brown. She is survived by her daughter Edith M. Brittain of Maryland; son George Richard Darnell Jr. and his wife Linda of Alabama; one brother, Guy E. Brown Held in Fatal Shooting
John Basil Brown, 36, is charged with the fatal shooting of an employee, Lawrence Geer, 56, late Friday night at the Brown home near Lydia. According to reports, Brown said Geer came to his home about 11:30 that night cursing him and threatening to kill him, armed with a .20 gauge shotgun. Brown fired twice with a .22 pistol. Then Geer fired a shot, Brown said, and went away. Sheriff W.D. Deane said that Brown reported he was not aware Geer was dead until about 6:30 Saturday morning when Brown's brother-in-law Robert Morris who lives near by, came to tell him Geer was lying dead in the road. Brown is free on $5,000 bond pending hearing.

Her husband was the late James O. Hughes. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Carolyn and Sidney Harlow of Orlando, Fla., Janice and Stanley Morris of Dyke and James and Tara Shifflett of Ruckersville; two brothers, Robert Morris and Fred Morris of Stanardsville; one sister, Mamie Estes of Stanardsville; 11 grandchildren, Mitch and Glenn Harlow, Bobbie Scott of Orlando, Fla., Tony Morris of Ruckersville, Annette Shifflett of Crozet, Rhonda, Julie and Brian Morris of Dyke, Dawn, Jim and Mary Ann Shifflett of Ruckersville; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Steve Edward Roach Executed January 13, 2000 by Lethal Injection in Virginia
Summary:
70 year old Mary Ann Hughes was found dead December 3, 1993, in the doorway of her home outside Stanardsville. Roach was a friend of Hughes' sister, Mamie Estes, and frequently helped the elderly woman by chopping wood and cutting the grass. He even visited Hughes to play Yahtzee. She was a sweet old lady whose door was open to everyone. But that didn't stop Roach from killing her. Hughes was standing in the front door of her home, and was killed by a single shotgun blast to the cheek. Her body was discovered the next day. Several weeks before the murder, Roach and two of his friends had been firing a shotgun at his home. When Hughes was shot, Roach took her car, a 1981 Buick Regal, and fled the state, traveling to North and South Carolina. Police say that on Dec. 4, 1993, Roach attempted to use the dead woman's bank card at an automated teller machine in North Carolina. A videotape taken at the ATM was introduced as evidence. On Dec. 5, 1993, South Carolina highway patrolmen spotted the Buick speeding and attempted to stop the car, but the driver escaped into the woods. After turning himself in on Dec. 6, 1993, Roach gave an audiotaped confession in which he stated that he shot Hughes and took her car and purse. Roach, who was 17 at the time, said he didn't know why he killed Hughes.

Mrs. Izetta C. Brookman, 78, a native of Orange, died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was the daughter of Robert and Josephine Morris Crawford. Surviving are her husband, James S. Brookman Sr., of Charlottesville; two daughters, Mrs. Mary J. Morris and Mrs. Roberta Morris of Charlottesville; five sons, Henry B. Brookman, Robert Brookman and James Brookman, of Charlottesville, Frank Brookman of Newport News, and Lindsay Brookman, of Baltimore; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Mowbry and Mrs. Murphy Mowbry, of Gordonsville, and a brother, James Crawford, of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Preddy's Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. I.B. Hall, pastor of the University Baptist Church, will officiate.

CROZET - James Samuel Brookman, 98, died Tuesday at his home in Crozet. He was the son of the late Henry and Vertie Melton Brookman. He was married to the late Mrs. Izetta Crawford Brookman. He is survived by five sons, Frank Brookman of Louisa, Robert Brookman and Henry Brookman, both of Charlottesville; Lindsay Brookman of Woodridge and James Brookman of Richmond; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Morris and Mrs. Mary Morris, both of Charlottesville, and 15 grandchildren. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. yesterday in Oakwood Cemetery in Charlottesville. The name was given incorrectly as Brookland in yesterday paper.

Mary Brookman Morris, 95, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in a local hospital. She was born Dec. 5, 1904, in Orange County, daughter of the late James Samuel and Izetta Crawford Brookman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Camilous Jasper Morris; a sister, Roberta B. Morris; and five brothers, James, Henry, Frank, Lindsay and Robert Brookman. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Survivors include a daughter, Hattie McDaniel and her husband, Justin N., of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Kelvin D. McDaniel and his wife, Deborah, and Gary N. McDaniel and his wife, Linda; three great-grandsons, Michael, Christopher and Evan McDaniel; two devoted nieces, Ida Bishop and Ruth Napier; and a devoted nephew, Lawrence Morris. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends form 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Beverly Lee Crawford, 88, of Orange died Monday, June 12, 1995, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born March 9, 1907, in Louisa County, he was the son of the late Zebedee Crawford and Carrie Layton Crawford. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Crawford and Ollie Crawford. Mr. Crawford was retired from Virginia Department of Highway and a member of North Pamunkey Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Rena Moubray Crawford; two sons, Lee Crawford and his wife, Lois, of Gordonsville, and John E. Crawford and his wife, Reeth, of Waynesboro; a daughter, Barbara Crawford Barden and her husband, Roy, of Barboursville; a sister, Gracie C. Williams and her husband, Buford, of Gordonsville; twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m. She was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Greene County and was a daughter of the late James Lewis Moubray and Myrtle Crawford Moubray. She was married to the late, Charlie Newton Moubray and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greene County. Mrs. Moubray is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Boardman and her husband, Gerald, of Gordonsville; two sons, Delma Moubray and his wife, Audrey, of Orange and Charles "Wilson" Moubray and his wife, Rosamond, of Gordonsville; son-in-law, Kenneth Hahn, of Orange; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four brothers; Kays Moubray, Eugene Moubray, Cary Moubray, and Floyd Moubray; and four sisters, Mary Jane Brookman, Rena Crawford, Minnie Fincham and Madie Brookman. Beverly Lee Crawford, 88, of Orange died Monday, June 12, 1995, at the Orange County Nursing Home. Born March 9, 1907, in Louisa County, he was the son of the late Zebedee Crawford and Carrie Layton Crawford. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Crawford and Ollie Crawford. Mr. Crawford was retired from Virginia Department of Highway and a member of North Pamunkey Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Rena Moubray Crawford; two sons, Lee Crawford and his wife, Lois, of Gordonsville, and John E. Crawford and his wife, Reeth, of Waynesboro; a daughter, Barbara Crawford Barden and her husband, Roy, of Barboursville; a sister, Gracie C. Williams and her husband, Buford, of Gordonsville; twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m. Thursday, June 15, 1995, at Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment at the North Pamunkey Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Hatfield and the Rev. Russ Barb will be officiating. George Valentine Moubray, of Richmond and formerly of Orange County, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond. He was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Orange County, son of the late George and Sadie Moubray. Mr. Moubray served in World War II in the Army Infantry Division, and was a retired heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He was married to the late Nora Elizabeth Moubray. Mr. Moubray is survived by one daughter, Shirley Jean Rouse of Fredericksburg; three grandchildren, Cheryl Hattorf of Montpelier, Frankie "Cookie" Armstrong of Ashland, and William Rouse of Fredericksburg; and four great-grandchildren, Sara and Travis Hattorf, and Amy and Taylor Armstrong. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, with interment in Emmanuel Episcopal Cemetery in Rapidan. The Rev.
