Thomas Sr. met a tragic death by being thrown from a spirited horse near his home. Thomas and his wife Jincy are buried on a knoll between the house site and the river. Their graves are marked with walled-in granite slabs. These graves are perfectly carved in the shape of coffins. Some of this work probably was done by slave labor. WILLIAM HENRY BAILEY
W. Henry Bailey, 83, for many yrs a resident of Anderson, died at his home 41 R. St. at 8 am yesterday following an illness of about four weeks. Mr. Bailey a retired textile wqorker, was a native of Hart Co., GA, but had made his home in Anderson since 1927. He was born 23 Aug 1874, a son of the late William T. & Judy McCurley Bailey, both of Hart Co. families. Since coming to Anderson he had been a faithful member of the Oakwood Bapt. Church where he was active as long as health permitted. He & Mrs. Bailey observed their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov 22 last year. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Myrtice Gurley Bailey of the home; 5sons: William Eber Bailey-Hartwell, GA, Denver C. Bailey, Sidney M. Bailey, H. Gerald Bailey & Farris O. Mr. Bailey, a farmer by ocupation had been in declining health for 10 years but critically ill only one day. J. S. McCURLEY, 83, DIES SATURDAY; COKESBURY BURIAL
Mr. James Sanford McCurley, aged 83 years, one of Hart County's leading
citizens, died Saturday, May 1st, 1943 from a heart attack; he had been ill for
one week. Funeral services were held from the Cokesbury Methodist church on Monday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. B. Todd. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Laura Snow; a daughter, Mrs. Flora Evans, of Elberton; five sons, Messrs. R. I. McCurley, of Atlanta, M. W. McCurley and P. B. McCurley, of Elberton, Beno McCurley, of Hart County, and Julian McCurley of Greenville, S.C.; four sisters, Mrs. J. R. Charping, of Greenville, S.C., Mrs. Sallie Jordan, of Pelzer, S.C., Mrs. John Shiflet of Anderson, S.C. and Mrs. Ada Evans, of Elberton, and one brother Mr. R. E. McCurley, of Hartwell. Mr. McCurley, who was a member of the Beulah Church, and highly respected by everyone, was born in Hart County, June 20, 1859, being a son of the late Lewis McCurley and Nancy Shiflet McCurley. The death of this good man is deplored on every hand; he will be greatly missed. The sympathy of a host of friends is extended the bereaved family. A large assembly was present at the funeral Monday afternoon. Interment was in the Cokesbury cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. Albert Page, Frank Mauldin, A. B. Brown, Henry Ethridge, Chas. H. Richardson, Clinton McCall and Will Evans. Honorary pallbearers included A. N. Alford, Sr., J. G. Richardson, J. W. Baker, A. S. Johnson, J. W. Herndon, T. L. Matheson, T. O. Herndon, Lindsey T. Hall, Judge A. E. Etrzberger and L. H. Cobb. Funeral director W. C. Page was in charge.

AMOS DAVID MCCURLEY
Easley -- Amos David McCurley, 65, of the Dacusville section near Easley and a former resident of Anderson, died at his home at 8;20 a.m. Monday following an illness of six weeks. Mr. McCurley, a native of Elbert County, Ga., was a son of the late Gaines W. Mattie Charping McCurley. For 37 years he made his home in Anderson where he was employed in the cloth room at Gluck Mill. He later lived in Florida for 16 years, and before his retirement he was a furniture finisher. For the past two years he had resided in the Dacusville community, Rt. 5 Easley. He was a member of the South side Baptist Church at Wellington Mill, Anderson. Survivors: widow, Mrs. Alice Caudell McCurley; five sisters, Mrs. H. W. Moore, Mrs. G. G. Teasley and Mrs. J. A. Tiller of Anderson, Mrs. Ligon McCurley of Hartwell and Mrs. Dewey Ellison of Armuchee, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Old Silver Brook Cemetery at Anderson. Born in Habersham County, Georgia., she was a daughter of the late John David and Jane Ferguson Caudell. She was a former employee of Oakmont Nursing Center, Greenville, and a member of the Followers of Christ. Surviving are sister, Miss Fannie Caudell of Norris; Several nieces; several nephews. Mrs. Donie Irene McCurley Shiflet, 87, widow of John E. Shiflet of 511 Hill Street, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday at her home following two years of declining health and two days critical illness. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Shiflet was the daughter of the late Lewis and Nancy Shiflet McCurley. She was a member of the Homeland Park Church of God. She had been a resident of Anderson since 1924, moving here from Iva. Her husband died Oct. 2, 1932. Survivors: four sons, Frank Shiflet, Calhoun Falls, Denver Shiflet, Porter Shiflet and Mack Shiflet, all of Anderson; four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Fain, Leesburg, Fla., Mrs. John Henry Jones, Mrs. Charles Patterson with who she made her home, Mrs. Paul Fowler, both of Anderson; 31 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Homeland Park Church of God, the Revs. D. M. Cobb, Roy Allen and R. E. Cason officiating. Burial will be in Silver Brook Cemetery. Pallbearers: Roy Shiflet, Hubert Shiflet, Buddy Williams, Jack Suttles, Donnie Roy Vickery and George Shiflet. The Ladies of Homeland Park Church of God will form the escort of honor. The body, at the McDougald Funeral Home, will be place in the church at 2:30 P.M. Thursday. The family is at the residence. They will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Following an illness of about one year, J. E. Shiflet, of Riley Street died at his home shortly after ? O®clock yesterday morning. He was 60 years old. The deceased, a native of Hart County, Ga., had been living in Anderson 12 years. Surviving Mr. Shiflet in addition to his widow who was Miss Monnie McCurley, are four sons and four daughters as follows: F. L. Shiflet, of Georgia; F. D., J. P., M. A. Shiflet, of Anderson: Mrs. Nellie Fain, of Georgia, and Mrs. Susie Jones, Mrs. Lucile Patterson and Mrs. Bessie Fowler, all of Anderson. A brother, Claude Shiflet, of Georgia, and a sister, Mrs. Salie Sharpton, of Anderson, also survive. Funeral services will be held from the Coakesberry (Georgia) church Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock by the Rev. Mr. Burton, of Piedmont, officiating, and internment will be made in the Coaksberry cemetery with G. F. Tally and Son. Funeral directors, in charge. Jeff Porter Shiflet, 65, died Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Hospital after three weeks of illness. Born in Elbert County, Ga., he was the son of the late J. E. and Donie Irene Shiflet. He attended Centerville Church of God and was a retired textile employee. Surviving are widow, Mrs. Georgia Alexander Shiflet of the home; sons, Billy Joe Shiflet of Anderson and George Shiflet of the home; daughter, Mrs. Shelby Jean Alexander of Commerce, Ga.; brothers Mack and Denver Shiflet of Anderson, Frank Shiflet of Calhoun Falls; sister, Mrs. Bessie Fowler, Mrs. Susie Jones and Mrs. Lucille Patterson of Anderson; five grandchildren. Services at 2 p.m. Thursday at McDougalds North Chapel by the Revs. Doyle Cobb, Hubert Orvin, and Claudie Wilson. Burial in Old Silverbrook Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. The family is at the residence, 2928 Plainview Road.

Georgia Alexander Shiflet, age 95, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Exalted Health and Rehab of Iva. Born in Piedmont, SC she was the daughter of the late George Washington Alexander and the late Mattie Ward Alexander. She retired from Ryobi after many years of service. Georgia was a faithful member of Centerville Church of God where she attended the Adult Sunday School Class. She is survived by her children, George Shiflet, of Anderson, SC, and Jean Montrose, of Social Circle, GA; seven grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 expected great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; her brother, Fred Alexander, of Piedmont, SC; a close and special friend, Frances Maness; and her little companion, her dog, Chico. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Porter Shiflet; her step-mother, Ceily McGinnis Alexander; her son, Billy Shiflet; her daughter, Mary Shiflet; 2 brothers and 4 sisters. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Terry Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Old Silver Brook. The family will be at the home of her son, George Shiflet, 15 Jonathan's Joy Circle, Anderson, SC, and will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, February 24, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Flowers are optional. Born in Hart County, Ga., she was a spinner at Wellington Mill and was a member of the Wellington Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are son, Charles Ervin Fowler of Florida; daughter, Mildred Louise Roach of California; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was the widow of Paul Fowler and the daughter of the late John Edward Shiflet and Donnie McCurley Shiflet. She was preceded in death by brothers Mack S. Shiflet, Frank Shiflet, Porter Shiflet, and Denver Shiflet; and sisters, Nellie Fain, Lucille Patterson and Susie Jones. ANDERSON - Mack Alvin Shiflet, 90, of 311 Simpson Road died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Anderson Place Health Center. Born in Hart County, Ga., he was a retired watchmaker and a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a member of High Praises Church of God and a former member of McDuffie Street Church of God, where he was a Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years. Surviving is sister, Bessie Fowler of Anderson. He was the widower of Annie Elizabeth Lollis Shiflet and the son of the late John Edward Shiflet and Donnie Irene McCurley Shiflet. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Susie Jones and Lucille Patterson. Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Chris Sustar; entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Anderson. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
