These are the ruins of what is historically known as "The Shiflett Mill".
It has been said that this mill was owned by the John Shiflett who married Joice
Powell prior to 1764. In Chester's investigation into the estate settlement
of John Shifflett, however, there can be found no reference to any mill, mill
stones, milling equipment, stock piled grain, or anything else that might be
construed as belonging to a mill. These assets should have been listed somewhere
if he was the owner. We have found however, references to a mill in the will
of Lewis Shiflett, son of John and Joice. When dividing his land among his children,
Lewis refers to "the new ford above the shop due north twenty paces till
we come against the mill canal keeping this side the canal twenty paces".
The mill probably belonged to Lewis and Sally Haselrig Shiflett.
Also, Norm Addington stopped and spoke with the current owner of the land a few months ago (Fall 1997). The owner said the mill stones seen in the photo were moved to this location by him from the Ballard mill. According to an 1866 map of Albemarle, Ballard's mill was located on Moormans River. One of the original mill stones belonging to this mill is partially buried in the ground (see photo on right). According to Norm, "the mill is located near Buck Mountain Creek and there is a mill race of several hundred yards to feed the water from the creek to the mill. A good part of the mill race is still intact. " Because of the mill stones, we know this was a grist mill, not a saw mill. |
