Tales From Bacon Hollow
In memory of Granny Morris
Submitted by: Shelly Seay shelly@mail.tqci.net

“If you ever go to Bacon Hollow, you will notice a culture all of its own. It's almost like going back in time 100 years. Part of this culture is the belief in Witches and Gypsies and spells. Following is a writing of some of the stories I've heard from Granny, up in the mountains.” -Shelly

The Witch

One night Granny and her mom were in bed when they saw a witch in the room. She had long fingernails and was so scary, that neither one of them ever stepped foot in that room again. (HONEST)

That same night the man down the street woke up and the Witch was in bed with him. The next morning the man had claw marks all up and down his back.
and in a related vein:
This story may have been an alcohol induced hallucination. -------- told everyone she woke up and there was a man in her bed with a pig's snoot and cloven feet. She swore it was the devil.

The Gypsy

There used to be a gypsy man, who would go from house to house and stay with the people inside of them. No one dared turn the man away for fear of a spell put on them. One day the man was staying at Granny and Pops, and as he was taking his bath, he asked Granny to scrub his back. Granny, who was pregnant at the time, replied, "Scrub your own scaley Ass." The gyspy man said, "Woo, that baby will be born with scales and eyes like a fish." Lo, and behold, when the baby was born it had scaly skin and fish-like eyes.

Spell Castin'

--------- mother-in-law's name was Annie. Annie had a spat with the man down the road. Annie got so mad (Granny said) that Annie took a canning jar and filled it with milk and set it on top of her stove and got a stick and chanted some spells. The next morning the man woke up black and blue. It looked like he'd been beat.

Moonshine, Stills, and the “Revenuers”

I also heard about one of the [relatives] who ran a still. This man buried the pipe under a stream, so the smoke would come up out of the water about two miles down stream. This would throw the revenuers off track.
Another story I heard was that as children, my [relative] and her sister were playing making moonshine and they filled the canning jars with water and put them under the sink. The revenuers did come and they really thought they found something, They were really surprised it was water.
