9 Oct 1783 Ordered that Thomas Carr, Bernard Carter, John Shifflett, William Clarkson, John Newcomb, Joshua Gradey, Richard Phillips, Stephen Phillips, George Gray, Joseph Burnett, and Joseph Harlow with their male labouring titheables, do assist in opening and keep in repair the road leading from Charlottesville to the broad mossing place, under William Johnson with his own male laboring titheables.

On the petition of John Harvie it is ordered that John Rodes, David Rodes, Charles Goodman, and John Marks Gentlemen, or any three of them do view the way proposed from the said Harvie's Mill to the road by Shiffletts, according to law, and report to the next Court, the conveniences and inconveniences attending the same, letting those have notice whose land may be affected by the said view.
11 Aug 1785 Ordered that Robert Davis, William Mitchie, Frost Snow, and Charles Goodman or any three of them do view the way from Thomas Johnsons to John Shiffletts and make report to the next court the most convenient way for a road and the conveniences and inconveniences attending the same.
10 Nov 1785 Ordered that William Garrison gang & George Twyman's Gang be added to the Gang under Robert Davis to open & clear the new road & that Joshua Grady, Stephen Phillips, Joseph Burnett, Rollin Horsley, Robert Maurey, John Shifflet, Bernard Carter, William Carter and Mr. White with their male labouring titheables be added to George Twymans gang.

Thomas Garth gentleman, made a report of the overseers of the roads in the following words In compliance with an order of March court directing the report to be made to June court of the Surveyor of Roads with such male labouring titheables as ought to work on said roads I have made out a list of such as appears to be in my hundred. Micajah Via, Senr, Surveyor of the road from the fork of Moorman's River about 6 or 700 yards above Robert McCullock's mill to the fork of Meachams River below John Rode's about 2 1/2 miles distance - a bad road to keep in repair - hands to work under him are his own male labouring tithables, John Rodes home house ditto Benjamin Clark and his mother's ditto Micajah Via Jr. ditto Henry Mills ditto Daniel Maupin (Gabriel's son) do Wade Via ditto Maryan Turners ditto George Turner ditto William Owen ditto in all about 14 hands John Slaughter Surveyor of the Road from Mechams River below John Rode's to the upper end of Thomas Garth junr field on Rodes road, hand to work under him are his own male labouring Titheables Colonel John Harvie's and John Sneed's male labouring Tithables at the Old Barracks Thomas Garth Senr ditto Richard Gaine's ditto in all about 15 hands the said road is about 3 1/2 miles distance. George Wayt surveyor of the road from the upper end of Thomas Garth junr field on Rode's road to where said road intersects with the Three Choped Road at Lewi's Old Tavern about 4 miles distance hands to work on said road are his own male labouring tithables Waddy Thompsons do Nelson Thompsons ditto Richard Bunches ditto Thomas Whitlow ditto Achilles Rogers ditto Thomas Garth junr ditto and William Shepherd Do in all about 19 hands. Mary Lewis, Micajah Clark, Benjamin Defoe, William Sharp, Joseph Shepherd, Thomas Chin, Nathan Hall, John Hall, John ---- and his male laboring [unreadable] Davis Carroll, William Carroll, Richard Mooney, Thomas K[unreadable-could this be Kincaid or Kimborough?], Thomas Carter, William Leah, and his male laboring [unreadable] Charles Huckstep, John Spencer, William Robertson, John Watson, Robert [Sisson or Jackson?], Edward Butler, Joel Shifflett, Nathan Crawford and T? Backson to be added to James Hucksteps for opening the road from Milton to Hammocks Gap.

Joseph Goodman is appointed a surveyor of the road leading by the barracks from John Shifletts to the river with the following male laboring titheables to keep same in repair to wit, William Michie's, John Shiflett's, Joel Shifletts, Joshua Grady and his son Joseph Burnet Champion Poindexter, Shadrick Battels Charles Cruther James Epperson and his son Charles Goodman William Owens Robert Maury Thomas Burton Lewis Shiflett Rowland Horsley William Pritt Martin Philips William Harris John Obrien Nathan Spradling Horsely Goodman Titheables and the male titheables of the said Joseph Goodman.

On the Petition of Kemp Catlett for an alteration of the road leading from Charlottesville to Blenheim Richard Price, John Watson, David Anderson and Joel Shiflett or any three of them being first sworn are appointed to view the proposed alteration and make a report to this court of the conveniences and inconveniences as well public and private that will attend the same

Isaac Miller, Brightberry Brown, John T. Hawkins, Joel Harris and John Mullins, Junr., the persons appointed by a former order of this court to view the road petitioned for by Elijah Garth and others made a report in the following words and figures to wit "In pursuance of an order of Albemarle Court to us directed, we the subscribers being sworn have viewed the way petitioned for by Elijah Garth and others and are of opinion that a road to run as follows to leave the road which crosses Ivy Creek below George Divers' mill about hundred yard from the upper corder of Elijah Garth's fence running through a field belonging to said Garth so as to wind round a small valley in the same to a branch, thence ascending a small in the most convenient way until it intersects the line between Richard Burch and said Garth thence on the land of the said Burch about one hundred yards in the most convenient way to the said Burch, thence North side of a small mountain through the land of Lewis Shifflett and ----- Wade, passing Wade's Spring thence down the said Spring branch through the lands of said Wade and Benjamin Brown to the line between said Brown and John Allphin thence along and near the said line for about ---- yards, thence leaving the Browns fence and running through the land of John Allphin the most convenient way to an old plant patch on Meadow Creek, thence crossing the creek, through the lands of Isaac Miller and a small corner of William Garner's lands into the Barrack road; will be of general utility and public convenience, being a nearer way considerably and passing over much firmer ground than the present way; provided the road petitioned for by Isaac Miller and others from the said Barrack road into Charlottesville should be established and rendered a good road for loaded wagons and we are of the opinion that the public would be benefitted by opening the road petitioned for by said Garth, provided the said road petitioned for by Isaac Miller and others is made a good as the roads in the country generally are no public inconvenience in our opinion will result from opening the said road and the private inconveniences will be only those of running through the lands of the persons above mentioned" And on the motion of the said Elijah Garth, a summons is awarded him commanding Lewis Shiflett and John Goodman , agent for ----- Wade to appear here on the first Monday in September next to shew cause if any they have or can say why the said road should not be established agreeable to the report aforesaid. George Bruce being in open court at the time the report aforesaid was returned and entering himself a party opposer of the said road.

Joshua Shiflett is by the court appointed surveyor of the road in the room of Bartlett Davis with the usual gang to keep the same in good repair.

On the petition of John Rogers for the change of a road called Brymmers road, Benjamin Lacey, Reubin Mansfield, Joel Shiflett and Charles Lacey or any three of them being first sworn are appointed to view the proposed change and make report thereof to this court.

William Goodman is appointed surveyor of the road that runs by the barracks to William Michie's from John Shiflett's old place to the river in the room of Crenshaw Fretwell with the following male labouring tithables to wit, Charles Goodman's Horsley Goodman, Gideon Carr, Augustine Goodman, Joshua Johnson, Thomas Crenshaw, William Fretwell's estate, Philip Philips, Nathan Spradling, Jessee Grady, James Robinson, William Robinson, Joseph Bennett, James Carter, William Michie's hands (at the horse shoe) and said Crenshaw Fretwell to keep the same in good repair.

On the motion of Richard Bruce, it is ordered by the court that the hands under Joshua Shiflett clear the road from Kid's creek to the Orange Line.

The Commonwealth of Virginia against Lewis Shiflett, Surveyor Road -- Presentment -- This day came the defendant by his attorney, who being heard, it is considered by the court then the Presentment be dismissed.
