  • Thomas Hannah's heirs vs. Henry V. Bingham
    John Shiflet deposes, 1815, the ford on South River was called Thompson's Ford 50 years ago.

    Jacob Scott deposes, at his home in Rockingham, he is 70 years old. When he was 20 years old he recalls that his half-brother lived then in a cabin on land now owned by Jno. Mohler on South River, near a cave then called Hannah's Cave, since known as Madison's Cave; present saltpeter works on the land; Mathias Amond lived near the ford; James Lamb and his son, James Lamb. The cave was also called Weyer's or Amond's Cave.

    Alexr. Hannah deposes, in Augusta, 1814, is 70 years of age; he was 14 years old when his father moved to the plantation where heirs of Thos. Hannah now live; Alexr. was son of Joseph; the Hannah's got Ocher out of the Cave; there was a schoolhouse near the mouth of the cave:

  • 6 May 1817 At a Court Summoned and held at the Courthouse of Augusta County on Tuesday the 6th day of May 1817 for the examination of Silas Shiflett (or a man who calls himslf by that name) late of the County of Augusta, who stands charged with feloniously stealing and pair of Overalls the property of Richard Bows the value of Six dollars, and also and pair of Overalls the property of Henry Miller of the value of four dollars.

    Present Alexander StClair, Joseph? Bel---, Andrew -ultew, John C. Sewers and Samuel Blackwood, Gent. Justices

    The prisoner was led to the bar in custody of the Sheriff of the county, and being thereof arrainged plead Not Guilty; Whereupon sundry witnesses being sworn and examined to --ing the prisoner and the prisoner heard in his own defense it is the opinon of this Court that the prisoner Guilty of Grand Larceny, and that he ought to be tried for the same at the next superior Court of law to be held for this County whereupon the prisoner is remanded to jail. p. 207

    Richard Bows, Henry Miller and Robert Groomes, persally appeared in Court and acknowledged themselves severally indebted to James P. Preston Esq. governor of this Commonwealth and his successors in the sum of One Hundred dollars each to be levied of their goods and Chattles, Lands and tenements and to the said Govenor or his successors, rendered for the case of the Commonwelath upon condition that if the said Richard Bows, Henry Miller and Robert Groomes shall personally appear before the judge of the Superior Court of law to be holden for Augusta County at the Courthouse on the first day of September term next, then and there to give evidnece in behalf of the Commonwealth, against Silas Shiflett, who stands [no more submitted] p. 208

  • 24 Jul 1820 William Shiflet orphan of James Shiflet deceased being above the age of 14 years appeared in Court and with the approbations of this Court made choice of Willis Herrin as his Guardian who thereupon together Samuel Fiskes his security entered into and making their ---- in this penalty of $200 conditioned as the law directs -----. p. 62
