James Monroe Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia To all to whom these presents shall Come Greeting Know Ye: That by virtue of two warrents, "to wit" one hundred and fifty five acres by Exchanged Warrant Number eight hundred and one [801] issued the ninth day of June Seventeen hundred and ninety seven, and fifty acres by Land Office Treasury Warrant Number nine thousand and Eleven [9011] issued the twenty first of November one thousand seven hundred and eighty one, There is Granted by the said Commonwealth unto John Shiflett A Certain tract or parcel of land Containing two hundred and five acres by Survey bearing date the fourth day of March one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight, lying and being in the County of Albemarle and Orange, one hundred and eighty four acres in the former, and twenty one acres in the latter County, and bounded as followeth to wit, beginning at a poplar corner to Francis Coward, then on his lines, South eighty six degrees East forty two poles to three poplars, in the County line, corner to said Coward and Huckstep, then on Hucksteps line, north thirty five degrees West one hundred poles to a white oak in said line, thence new lines South forty eight degrees West forty four poles to a Chesnut thence North Seventy five degrees West twenty four poles to pointers, thence South fifty degrees West fifteen poles to a Chesnut oak, thence north eight six degrees West ninety two poles to a Chesnut, then South sixty five degrees West Seventy four poles to a Chesnut on a ridge thence north forty five degrees West ninety four poles to a Chesnut, thence North Seventy two degrees West fifty three poles to a chesnut thence north thirty five degrees west forty poles to a Chesnut oak, thence South forty four degrees west seventeen poles to a Chesnut oak, thence South fifteen degrees East thirty seven poles to a pointer corner to David Eppeson, then on his line north sixty four degrees East twenty six poles to a Chesnut South fifty one degrees East thirty poles to a Chesnut South sixteen degrees East fifty one poles to a Chesnut South fifty degrees West thirty two poles to a hickory Stump South fifty seven degrees West twelve poles to a forked Chesnut South fifty two degrees East eighty poles to a Chesnut oak thence new lines, north eighty eight degrees East ninety eight poles to a hiccory sapling and spanish oak, South thirty two degrees East forty four poles to pointers corner to Jonathan Tyse?,then on his line north fifty nine degrees east one hundred and thirty seven poles to a Chesnut corner, to Francis Coward, thence on his line, north eighty degrees East sixty poles to the beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its apputenances to the said John Shiflett and his heirs for ever. In Witness whereof the said James Monroe Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia hath hereunto set his hand and caused the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond, on the nineteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and of the Commonwealth the twenty fourth.

This Indenture Made this Seventh day of September in the year one thousand Eight hundred and one. Between Joice Shiflet and Mary Cox of the County of Albemarle and State of Virginia of the one part, and Claudius Buster Junr. of the State and County aforesaid of the Other part. Witnesseth that the said Joice Shiflett and Mary Cox for and in Consideration of the Sum of One hundred and Seventy pounds to them in hand paid by the said Claudius Buster Junr. the reicept whereof they do hereby acknowledge hat granted bargained sold and delivered unto said Claudius Buster Junr. One Certain Tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Albemarle which said Land Willed to us by our husband and father John Shiflett Containing One hundred and fifteen Acres more or Less, which said Buster lets them have one acre their life time and fire wood, not to make use of any kind of Timber. They are to have it at the Lower Corner next to Bland Ballard, said Land bounds as follows, adjoining Thomas Buster, Bland Ballard, John T. Hawkins and Elizabeth Obryan. To have and to hold the said Tract of Land with all its appurtenances [to Claudius Buster. . .] and his heirs forever, and the said Joice Shiftlett and Mary Cox for themselves, their heirs etc. do Covenant and agree with the said Claudius Buster Junr and his heirs etc. to forever warrant and defend the said Tract of Land with its appurtenances unto the said Claudius Buster Junr. and his heirs forever from the claim or claims of any person or persons Whatsoever In Witness whereof they have hereto set the hands and seals this day and date above written.

Articles of Agreement: Joel Shiflett and George Poindexter

Articles of Agreement made and entered into this 6th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two Between Joel Shiflett of the town of Milton of the one part and Geo Poindexter of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Shiflett hath bargained and sold to the said George Poindexter the lott of Land on which he now lives lying and being in the said town of Milton, having thereon one dwelling house in which the said Shiflett now lives, a Kitchen, Black Smith's Shop and other out houses Which said Lot of land is known and distingquished in the plan of said town by No at present unknown. Now the said Joel shiflett for and in consideration of the sum of Nine hundred Dollars, which he acknowledges to have received of the said George Poindexter binds himself his Heirs, Executors, Administrators, to deliver to the said George Poindexter lawful possession of the said Lott of Land on or before the twenty fifth day of December next well enclosed, And also to deliver the house hereon standing unimpaired, the Black Smiths Shop to be in good order for working one set of Black Smith's tools. And the said Shiflet doth hereby oblige himself his Heirs Executors and Admors to make good any injury the said house may sustain previous to there being delivered to the said Geo Poindexter and that if he the said Joel Shiflett should remove out of said house prior to the said 25th day of December next in that Case the said Geo Poindexter shall be entitled to take possesson thereof immediately the removal of said Shiflett & furthermore the said Joel Shiflett doth oblige himself his Heirs etc. to Make and execute to the said Geo Poindexter this Heirs or Assigns Whenever possession is delivered a good and sufficient Deed of conveyance in fee Simple to the aforesaid Lott of land and its Appurtenances In Testimony whereof the said Joel Shiflett hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first within written.

This Indenture made this Seventh day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two, Between George Poindexter of the County of Albemarle of the one part and Joel Shiflett of the same County of the other part Witnesseth, that the said George Poindexter for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred Dollars to him in hand paid by the said Joel Shiflett before the sealing and Delivery of these presents, the receipt of which he doth hereby confess, Hath given, granted, Bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant Bargain and sell unto the said Joel Shiflett his Heirs and assigns forever one certain half acre Lot? of Land, lying and being in the town of Milton, Known & distinguished on the Plan of said town by Number Fifty four And the said Geo. Poindexter doth hereby covenant and agree with the said Shiflett that he will warrant and forever defend a good and sufficient title in fee Simple to the aforesaid Lott of Land free and clear . . . In Testimony whereof the said Geo. Poindexter hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and Year first written above.

This Indenture made this twentyeighth day of November one thousand eight hundred and two between Bazel Guest and Rachael his Wife of the one part of Orange county, and Richard Shiflett of said county of the other part -- Witnesseth that the said Bazel Guest and Rachael his Wife hath for and in consideration of the sum of seventy pounds current money to them in hand paid, before the sealing and delivery bargained and sold unto the said Richard Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of Land whereon the said Bazel Guest now lives and including with it the said Guest's survey of eleven acres adjoining said tract in Orange County containing with the eleven acres added to it eightythree acres and one quarter be the same more or less and bounded as followeth to Wit -- Beginning at a hickory and two poplars on the bank of Linches river, thence south fifty degrees west twenty eight poles to a dead Oak, thence south thirty one degrees west ninety two poles to two chesnuts on the top of the mountain, thence north eighty degrees west thirty six poles to a chesnut on a ridge, thence north seventy two degrees west twenty five poles to a gum on a ridge, thence north forty five degrees west, fifty poles to two pins on a ridge thence north sixty two degrees east eleven poles to a large pine on the said of county line mountain, thence north fifty two degrees east, one hundred and fifty poles to an oak and hickory on the bank of Linche's river, thence down the different meanders of the said River to the beginning. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of Land unto the said Richard Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever, with its appurtenances etc. and the said Bazel Guest and Rachael his wife as will and shall for themselves their heirs and assigns forever warrant defend and maintain a good and lawful right in fee simple in the said land and premises unto the said Richard Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever. This Indenture made this 28th day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and two Between Joel Shiflett and Sally his wife of the County of Albemarle & Town of Milton of the one part and George Poindexter ---- of the said County and Town of the other part Witnesseth that the said Joel Shiflett & Sally his wife for and in consideration of the sum of nine hundred dollars to him the said Joel Shiflett to hand paid the receipt of which is doth hereby acknowledged Hath given granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said George Poindexter his heirs assigns ---- one certain Lott of Land lying and being in the said town of Milton having thereon one Dwelling house in which the said Shiflett now lives a Kitchen Blacksmiths shop his other out houses which said Lott of Land is known and distinguished in the plan of said Town by No. [blank] and the said Joel Shiflett and Sally his wife doth by these presents covenent and agree with the said George Poindexter that they will Warrant and forever Defend and good and sufficient title in fee Simple to the said Lot . . . This Indenture made the twenty first day of February in the year one thousand eight hundred three between Peter Johnson and Mary his wife of Prince Edward county of the one part and Joel Shiflett of Albemarle County of the other part, Witnesseth, that the said Peter and Mary for and in consideration of of the Sum of three hundred and eighty Pounds to them in hand paid The receipt is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained and sold and by these presents bargain, sell, and confirm to the said Joel Shiflett, his heirs and Assigns a certain tract or parcel of Land, lying on Buck Island Creek in the County of Albemarle containing by estimation two hundred and two acres more or less and bounded as follows, that is to say, beginning on the North side of Buck Island Creek at pointer on the said Creek, and running thence --- --- Thirty eight degrees West one hundred and eighty poles to pointers, ---- South Forty six degrees East, one hundred and forty six poles to pointers, thence South thirty eight degrees East two hundred and fifty poles to pointer on the North Side of Buck Island Creek, thence with the said Creek, as it meanders to the place of beginning, ---- that ------- of a tract of Land late the property of Valentine Wood, who died intestate, which, on the distribution thereof was allotted to the said Peter Johnson and Mary his Wife in right of the said Mary, one of the Sisters of Valentine Wood deceased, and which is described by the commisioners ----- by the Court of Albemarle County to divide the tract of Land aforesaid amongst the legal representatives of the said deceassed, in their report on that subject as Number four, of the allotments by them made, with all the appurtenances thereto. To have and to hold the said two hundred and two Acres of Land more or less, to the said Joel Shiflett his heirs and Assigns forever. And the said Peter Johnson and Mary his wife for themselves and their Heirs the --- of land with all and singular the appurtenances unto the said Joel Shiflett his heirs, and Assigns, free from the claim or claims of them the said Peter Johnson and Mary his Wife or either of them, their or either of their heirs and of all and every person or persons whatsoever, shall, will and ----- and forever defend by these presents. This Indenture made this Eight day April in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and three. Between Joel Shiflett and Salley his wife of the County of Albemarle of the one part and John Fagg of the county aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that he said Joel Shiflett and Salley his wife, for and in consideration of the Sum of Four hundred Dollars to them in hand paid by the said John Fagg before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt of which they hereby confess hath given granted Bargained and Sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said John Fagg his heirs and assigns forever one certain half acer lot of land lying and being in the Town of Milton. Know and distinguished in the place of said town number Fifty four and the said Joel Shiflett and Salley his wife doth hereby Covenant and agree with the said John Fagg that they will warrent & forever defend a good and Sufficient title in fee simple to the aforesaid lot of Land free and Clear from the Claim or Claims of all & every person or persons whatsoever. . . .by virture of a Land Office Treasury Warrant number fifteen thousand one hundred and seven [15107] issued the fourteenth day of Februrary one thousand seven hundred and eighty three [1783], There is Granted by the said Commonwealth unto Bazel Guest a Certain tract or parcel of land Containing eleven acres by survey bearing date the twenty third day of December seventeen hundred and ninety nine, lying and being in the County of Orange, on the south side of Linches river and bounded as followeth "to wit" beginning at a large chesnut, oak corner to William Crew and John Huckstep thence S45W6 poles to a chesnut Oak in said Crew's line S24W60 poles to three small chesnuts in Shiflets line with his line to a chesnut and chesnut oak ona ridge in said Shiflets new line with the same N49E39 poles to a white oak corner to said Shiflet in the said Hucksteps line thence with the same N40W44 poles to the beginning. . . in Richmond on the twenty fifth day of March in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and three. . . This Indenture made this twenty-third day of April One thousand eight hundred and three, Between John Shiflett, Tho. son and Susanna his Wife of Orange County of the one part, and John Snow of the County aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that the said John Shifflett and his wife, hath for and in consideration of the sum of sixty Dollars to them in hand paid by the same John Snow before the sealing and delivering of these presents, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, hath bargained, sold, assigned, enfeoffed and confirmed unto the said John Snow, his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Orange containing by estimation ninety eight and quarter acres be the same more or less and bounded as followeth, Towit _Beginning at two sycamores, Whence South twenty one and half degrees west, ninety pole to a Spanish Oak, thence north seventy three degrees West, one hundred pole, thence north eighty six degrees West, forty two pole to a Chesnut on the top of a mountain, thence north twenty one and half degrees east, One hundred and sixteen poles to a maple joined at the river then down the river to the Beginning. This Indenture made this twenty first day of November in the year [unreadable] Between Jacob Martin of the County of Albemarle of the one part and Wm. McGehee of the County aforesaid. Witnesseth that the said Martin inorder [to] secure the payment of seven thousand pounds of nett inspected Tobacco ---- the said Martin do do hereby acknowledge to be justly owing from [him the] said Martin to him the said McGehee hat made over in trust unto Alexander Garrett for the benefit of him the said William McGehee and in order to effectually secure the payment of the aforesaid quantity of seven thousand pounds of nett inspected Tobacco to him the said William McGehee, hath bargained, given, granted, and made over unto the said Alexander Garrett one certain tract or parcel of Land lying in the said County of Albemarle at the foot of the mountain on Kids Creek containing [one] hundred and twenty four Acres be the same more or less it being the tract of Land that the said Martin purchased of the said McGehee, together with all that appurtaines or in any wise belongs to the same. And it is [ex]pressly agreed by each of the parties aforesaid that if the said Martin [his] heirs etc. does not well and truly pay unto the said McGehee his heirs etc. the full and just quantity of seven thousand pounds of nett inspected Tobacco, on or before the twenty fifth day of December in the year 1813 that the said Alexander Garrett, shall immediately proceed to sell for ready money the aforesaid tract of Land and pay to the said McGehee all and any part of the aforesaid seven thousand pounds of nett inspected Tobacco with all the Interest due thereon, and Cost of selling the same and the balance of any to the said Martin. But the said Alexander Garrett is to give at least ten days notice of the time and place of such Sale by advertising the same on Court day at the Courthouse Door of the said County and at one or more of the most public places in the neighbourhood, where the land lies. This Indenture made this 24th day of April one thousand eight hundred and twenty between Lewis Shiflett and Sally his wife of the county of Orange of the one part and John Shiflett of the said county of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Lewis Shiflett and Sally his wife for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which they have and bear to the said John Shiflett their son and of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid by the said John Shiflett the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge have given granted bargained and sold and by these presents do give grant bargain and sell unto the said John Shiflett and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Orange containing one hundred and twenty six acres be the same more or less and bounded as followeth Beginning at a gum at the mouth of a branch on the bank of Lynches river thence S 30 degrees W 170 poles to a corner spanish oak thence N 48 degrees W 80 poles to corner chesnut on the mountain thence N 5 degrees W one hundred and seventy poles to three chesnut oaks thence new line Viz. N 5 E 68 poles to a beech and gum at the mouth of Lynches river then down the river to the beginning. The said Lewis reserves nevertheless for himself and his said wife Sally the right of getting and taking from the said land any timber which they may choose and also of getting fruit from the orchard on the said land for and during their lives and the life of the longest liver which land was conveyed to the said Lewis Shiflett by James Early and wife by their Indenture bearing date the twenty seventh day of February 1819 To have and to hold the said land with the reservations aforesaid to him the said John Shiflett his heirs and assigns forever. Witnesseth that the said John Snow hath for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he bears his son Early Snow and for the further consideration of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said Early Snow before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath given bargained sold enfoffed delivered and confirmed unto the said Early Snow his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Orange Containing by estimation fifty acres bet he same more or less and bounded as follows towit Beginning at two sycamores thence south twenty one and half degrees west ten poles to a persimmon tree corner to Hailey Snow thence up the branch with said Hailey Snow line to a chestnut on the top of a mountain thence north twenty one and a half degrees east one hundred and sixteen poles to a maple joining the river thence down the river to the beginning. This Indenture made this twenty second of April eighteen hundred and twenty two by and between John Snow of the county of Orange and state of Virginia of the one part and Merry Shiflett of the county and state aforesd of the other part. Will that the sd. John Snow and Nancy his wife [Note: the standard interpretation of this name by Snow researchers is Mary, however the name Mery or Merry appears 5 times in this deed and in each case the r and y are connected the same way. With this wife's name the letter connection is totally different and there is a c there--the name is most probably Nancy or Marcy.] doth will and shall forever for the consideration of the sum of twelve shillings the sum in hand paid by the sd. Mery Shiflett before the signing sealing and delivering of these presnts. The said John Snow hath bargained and sold to the said Mery Shiflett and his heirs forever a certain Tract or parcel of land and bounded as followeth Beginning at a maypole running thence north up a ----- branch to Henry Snows line on a poplar thence south to Roaches river a line of Henry Snows and Augustine Snows a sycamore on the bank of the river thence down the river to the beginning and the sd. Mery Shiflett to have and to hold the sd land with all appurtances clear of all claims of the sd John Snow or heirs or any person or persons whatsoever thereto claiming and the sd John Snow doth stand bound to protect the same.
