Know all men by these presents that I William Shiflett of the County of Greene and State of Virginia am held and firmly bound to John Shiflett in the sum of four hundred & fifty Dollars current money of this commonwealth for the true payment whereof I bind myself my heirs etc. firmly by these presents sealed with my seal and dated this 20th day of January 1844.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said William Shiflett hath this day bargained and sold unto the said John Shiflett a certain parcel of land lying in Greene and Rockingham Counties and situated near the top of the Blue Ridge where Richard Lamb formerly lived for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred twenty five dollars and bounded as follows beginning at Thomas Shifletts corner to where a small piece of the land belongs in Bledsoes line then on with the said Bledsoes line to the corner, thence to two chestnut oaks, then to some ash Saplings, thence to two chestnut oaks, from thence to William Smith's corner, thence to Bledsoe's second corner, thence to Bledsoes beginning Corner, thence with William Lambs line to the Hickory corner, thence to the beginning.

Now I the said William Shiflett bind myself as above to make or cause to be made a good general warranty deed now if the deed Shall be made agreeably to this agreement then this obligation shall be void otherwise to remain in full force.

Pemberton Shiflett and Nancy his wife, to Lemuel I. Yager

This Indenture made this the 8th day of April eighteen hundred and forty four between Pemberton Shiflett and Nancy his wife of the County of Greene and State of Va. of the one part and Lemuel I. Yager of the other part of the same County and State, whereas the sd. Pemberton Shiflett is indebted to Jeremiah McMullan in the sum thirty six dollars and thirty cents, the same being for the purchase of a horse for which the sd. Jeremiah McMullan has ----- and actually ----- current money of Va. the payment of which sum with lawful interest ----- from this day the sd. P.Shiflet & his wife Nancy Shiflet are willing and desirous effectively to assume and secure to the sd. Jeremiah McMullan.

This Indenture therefore witnesseth that the sd. P. Shiflet and Nancy his wife as well, in consideration of the premises aforesaid as of one dollar to then in hand paid by the sd. Lemuel I. Yager the receipt whereof the sd. P. Shiflet and his wife do hereby acknowledge, hath granted, bargained, sold and conveyed and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the sd. Lemuel I. Yager his heirs and assigns, two equal ninth parts of the land and tenements of the lands formerly owned by James Beazley, one ninth be ---- legacy and the other ninth the same bought of Benjamin R. G. Walker and Sarah his wife lying and being in the County of Greene and Rockingham and State of Virginia with all and singular the houses, buildings, and all things pertaining unto with all the rights and title and estate of the said Pemberton Shiflet and Nancy his wife, and also the ------ -------, rents and profits thereof to have and to hold ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ shall on or before the 15th of Nov. 1844 truly pay to the sd. Jeremiah McMullan the above named sum of thirty six dollars and thirty cents, This Indenture to become void but if the sd. Pemberton Shiflet and Nancy his wife fail to pay the above named sum of thirty six dollars and thirty cents then the sd. Lemuel I. Yager may, and shall despose at public auction the sd. lands having given ten days notice by advertising the same in Stanardsville, Greene County, Va. for ready money at Stanardsville or on the premises or at New erection as may best suit the said Shiflets and the proceeds of such sale shall be applied to the payment of the debts specified and such other debts as shall attend deed, also such other debts as the sd. P. Shiflet and Nancy his wife may be due sd. McMullan at the time of sale and in further trust the sd. Shiflet --- keep the lands in possession until the day of sale and the sd. P. Shiflet and Nancy his wife do for themselves, heirs, or assigns, do hereby agree to warrant and defend the sd. lands to the sd. L. I. Yager against all other persons what ever claiming right or title to the same and do promise and agree to execute all such deeds as shall be required to give the purchaser full possession and lawful right to said lands and tenements In witness whereof we subscribe our names and affix our seals this the day and date above written.

We Oliver Finks and Joel Jarrell, Justices of the peace in the county aforesaid in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that Pemberton Shiflett a party to a certain deed bearing date on the 8th day of April 1844 and hereto annexed, personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the clerks of the County Court of Greene in order that the said deed may be recorded. This Indenture made and entered into this the twenty eight day of Feby one thousand eight hundred forty four, Between Absalon Shifflett of the first part, William G Dunn Trustee of the second part James Shifflett Harden Shiflett MA Dunn & Co Solomon & Loudon Herring James Michie George Martin Richd Dopsey? Elijah K Davis Henry Conrad & Joseph Murry of the third part. Witnesseth that the said Absalom Shiflett for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said Wm G Dunn the receipt whereof is hereby ackd hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Wm G Dunn one tract of land containing two hundred and seventy eight acres in Albemarle County adjoining the Lands of Thomas Hall Mathew P. Walton & others Also crop Tobacco & corn to have & to hold the said Land unto him the said William G Dunn his heirs and assigns forever free from the claim or claims of All and every person or persons whatsoever upon the following conditions whereas the said Absalom Shifflett is justly indebted to James Shifflett the sum of one hundred and sixty three dollars four cents due by note thereof --- Feby 1843 Further more the said Absalon Shifflett is justly indebted to Hardin Shifflett the sum of two hundred & fifty dollars sixteen cents due by note this day Furthermore the said Absalon Shifflett is Justly indebted to M.A. Dunn & Co in the sum of thirty dollars due by note 1 Jany one thousand eight hundred & forty three also due M.A. Dunn in accounts to be settled by their books 1st Jany one thousand eight hundred & forty the said Shifflett to pay of an Executor's Dunn & Co. ---- ---- out of Tobacco, Further more the said Absalom Shifflett is Justly due Solomon Herring, London Herring each the sum of two hundred fifty Dollars due by note this day Furthermore the said Absalom Shifflett is justly indebted to James Michie the sum of thirty dollars due the 1st Feb 1843. Furthermore the said Abslon Shifflett is justly indebted George Martin the sum of one hundred Dollars due by note the 25 Dec 1843. Furthermore the said Absalom Shifflett is justly indebted to Richard Dopey? the sum of forty dollars due by note this day. Furthermore the said Absalom Shifflett is justly indebted to Elijah K Davis the sum of forty dollars due by note the said Abslaom Shiflett is justly indebted to Henry Coward the sum of fifty dollars due by note. Also the said Absalom Shifflett is justly indebted to Joseph Maury the sum of seventy dollars due by note to settle by said note, Now the true meaning and intent of this conveyance is such that should the said Absalon Shifflett well and truly pay the debts above named to the above named individuals on or before the 1st day of Jany one thousand eight hundred & fifty four then this indenture to be of no further use for or effect Whatever. Also provided that the said Absalon Shifflett should die before the 1st day ofJanuary 1854 then if the heirs of Winney Herring should pay the above named debts then the said named land to belong to them should the said Absalom Shifflett fail or the heirs of Winey Herring fail to pay the above named debts on or before the 1st day of Jany one thousand eight hundred & fifty four then the said William G Dunn upon request of the third parties above named is hereby authorized to sell the above named land giving sufficient notice thereof to the highest bidder for ready money and after paying the above mentioned debts with legal interest & cost attending the same the ballance if any to be paid to said Absalon Shifflett or his legal representatives. This Indenture made and entered into this the 15 September 1845, Between Nathaniel Shiflett and Elizabeth his wife of the first part and Lewis Shiflett of the second part., all of the county of Albemarle and state of Virginia. Witnesseth, that for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Lewis Shiflett, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted bargained and sold to the said Lewis Shiflett and his heirs forever, one tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Albemarle and bounded as follows, Beginning on the line of Zachariah Wood Sr, at the forks of the creek, and bounded by said Woods line and the line of Fountain Richards Sr and John Shiflett To the beginning, supposed to be ninety seven acres more or less, To have and to hold the above tract or parcel of land to him the said Lewis Shiflett, his heirs and assigns forever, free from the claim or claims of all or any persons whatsoever, In testimony whereof, the said Nathaniel Shiflett, and Elizabeth his wife have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and date above written.

This Indenture made and entered unto this 28th day of Oct 1845: Between Isaack Shiflett and Susan his wife of the first part, and George Martin of the second part, all of the county of Albemarle and state of Virginia, witnesseth: that for and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars to them in hand paid by the said George Martin the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, they the said Isaack Shiflett and Susan his wife, have granted bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant bargain and sell all their title to and interest in the following tracts or parcels of land, one tract known as the Humane tract of land sold to them as two hundred acres more or less being on the north side of the road on the headwaters of Buck Mountain Creek in Bruces Hollow reserving to themselves seventeen acres of said tract which is on the south side of said river, also one tract adjoining the above land containing forty eight acres more or less known as the Rocky ----- tract of land, to have and to hold the said tracts of land which adjoin the line of Davis Wood Nelson Barksdale, and others, to him the said George Martin and his heirs, free from all claim set ---- by us or our heirs forever, In testimony whereof the said Isaack Shiflett & Susan his wife have hereunto set our hands and affirmed our seals the year and day above written

Isaack Shiflett and Susan his wife, Deed of Trust to James L. Dunn & George Martin

This article of agreement made and entered unto the 28th day of Oct 1845 Between Isaack Shiflett and Susan his wife of the 1 part, James L. Dunn of the second part and George Martin of the 3rd part all of the county of Albemarle and state of Va witnesseth: that the said Isaack Shiflett and Susan his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted and bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell to the said James L. Dunn ninety acres of Land joining the land on which the said Shiflett now resides and known as the Davis tract of land to have & to hold the above land to him the said James L. Dunn and his heirs forever, free from the claim or claims of all or any person whatsoever, now whereas there is a suit at Law against the said Isaack Shiflett by the Orange Humane Society for a certain sum of money and whereas the said George Martin has assumed seven hundred and fifty dollars in said suit and whereas the said Shiflett in an article of agreement with said Martin have joined themselves for one half of any amount over the seven hundred and fifty dollars, which said Martin may be damaged and one half of the cost thereof at the same time reserving to themselves one half of any amount should said Martin succeed against said "Orange Humane Society." Now the true intent and meaning of this conveyance is such that should said George Martin be cast in said suit more than seven hundred and fifty dollars then upon request of said Martin or his attorney the said James L. Dunn shall proceed to sell the other ninety acres of Land, according to law and pay said Martin the one half of debt and cost, as above described and after paying said Martin as before described and the legal costs of recording deed &sale & --- residue if any to pay to said Isaack Shiflet and Susan his wife. But should said George Martin not be cast in said suit more than the seven hundred and fifty dollars then this Indenture is of no further force or effect. In testimony whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year last above written.

This Indenture made this Thirty first day of October the Year eighteen hundred & forty five, between Joel W. Shiflett of the one part, and Sarah Shiflett of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said Joel W. Shiflett in Consideration of one hundred thiry one dollars of Lawful money of the commonwealth to him in hand paid by the said Sarah Shiflett at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the reciept whereof is hereby acknowledged. Have bargained and Sold and by these presents do and each of them doth bargain and sell unto the said Sarah Shiflett, her heirs and assigns a certain tract of Land called (Rubys or Kerbys or Rerbys) containing one hundred and thirty six acres more or less of which certain tract of land the said Joel W. Shiflett came into possession of in the devision of his fathers' (Anderson R. Shiflett) estate Together with all and singular the appurtenances, and the said Joel W. Shiflett for himself and his heirs the said tract of land and all the singular the premises and appurtenances before mentioned and the said Sarah Shiflett, and his heirs and of all and every person or persons whatsoever shall will and do ------ and forever defend by these presents In witness where of the said Joel W. An Indenture made this 6th day of April in the year eighteen hundred and forty seven. Between Isaac Shiflett of the first part, James L. Dunn of the second part Whereas the said Isaac Shiflett is jointly indebted to Valentine W. Southall in the sum of thirty dollars by note bearing date about May 1846 with interest from about the date. To Brightberry B. Garth five dollars upon an open account since about April 1846. To Benjamin T. Brown in the sum of thirty dollars due by note --- in December 1844. To Thomas R. Dunn in the sum of thirty dollars due by note Feb 1846. To Medusa? Cave in the sum of sevety five dollars due by open A/c on or about March 1846. To Early B. Jordan, in the sum of seven hundred and ninety six dollars & 76 cents due by bond, bearing date on or about the 12?th of April 1845. To Edmund Davis on open account of about $10 due in 1845. To William Jordan in the sum of $50 due by note payable on demand, bearing date in November 1846. Dunn his heirs the tracts and parcels of land to wit: A certain tract or parcel of land situated in the County of Albemarle, being the tract of land whereon I reside, commonly called Langford Tract, containing about 66 acres. Also a certain other Tract adjoining the above named containing 9 acres, be the same more or less, which last tract is commonly called the Davis Tract. Also all ------- title and interest in and to a tract of land of about one hundred and fifty acres, that may be called "Humane Society Tract" bounded and described as in deed of the Orange Humane Society, bearing date on or about the 4th July 1839 which deed is of record in Clerks Office of the County Court of Albemarle and the said Isaac Shiflett do hereby upon the consideration above expressed, the provisions herein before stated to secure the payment of the debts before expressed grant, sell & convey to the following personal property subject only to the conditions of this trust to wit two horses, three head of cattle, two sows, eleven -----, four beds & bed steads, two cupboards, one bureau, two dining tables, two chairs?, two sets of knives and forks, my stock of tableware, & all my household and kitchen furniture. To have & to hold the above granted ------ -------- and the above named personal property to him the said James Dunn his heirs and assigns forever, together with all the privileges and appurtenances to the said land in any one appartaining of belonging. And the said Isaac Shiflett for himself his heirs, exec., & admin. does convenant with the said James L. Dunn his heirs and assigns that he the said Isaac Shiflett is lawfully seized in fee of the above granted Langford & Davis tracts and that he will and his heirs, exec. and admins. shall forever warrant & defend the same to the said James L. Dunn his heirs and assigns forever to the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever. Upon Trust ----- that the said James L. Dunn his heirs and assigns shall permit the said Isaac Shiflett to remain in quiet and peaceable possession of the said tracts of land, and of the said personal property until default be made in the judgement of the above recited sum of money to the above named creditor on or after the 1st day January 1849 either in whole or in part and then upon ----- further trust that the said James L. Dunn shall & will ------ after the happening of such default of payment as he shall be required by all or any one of the said Isaac Shiflett's creditors whose debts are herein secured, their exec. admin., or assigns, so to do, sell the said tracts of land & their appurtenances and the said personal property or such part thereof as shall be sufficient for the payment of the debts herein secured with the interest to the highest bidder. The personal property for ready money, the said lands upon a credit of six, twelve, and 18 months after having fixed the time and place of sale at his own discretion and given four weeks notice at one or more Public places in the neighborhood by written advertisements, and out of the proceeds of sale shall after satisfying the necessary expense of executing the trust, pay to the said Valentine W. Southall, Brightberry B. Garth, Benjamin T. Brown, Medusa Cave, E. B. Jordan, William Jordan, Richard Dopey, Edmund Davis, Thomas Dunn, the estate of James Michie Jr decd & Marshall D. Elliott their executors, advisors or assigns, the respective ------ and the balance, if any, shall pay to the said Isaac Shiflett his heirs, exec., admin. and assigns. But if the whole of the said debts & accounts & interest shall be fully paid off and discharged on or by the first day of January 1849, so that no default of payment is made then this Indenture shall be void or else remain in full force. In testimony whereof, the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands & affixed their seals the day & year first before written.

This indenture made and entered into this fifth day of June 1847 between Henry B. Shifflett and Morton Shifflett of the one part and Candace Shifflett of the second part, all of Albemarle County & State of Virginia Witnesseth that the said Henry B. Shifflett and Morton Shifflett received from the said Candace Shifflett a deed bearing date on or about the14th day of January 1845 conveying Fifty acres of land in one tract and one other lot of ten acres and -------- all bonds due the said Candace Shifflett at the date of said deed to them the said Henry B. Shifflett and Morton Shifflett. Now the said Henry B. Shifflett and Morton Shifflett for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to them in hand paid by the said Candace Shifflett the receipt wherefore is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained assigned ------ and by these presents do ------- and release to the said Candace Shifflett and her heirs forever all the right title and interest which they have ---- the said deed of 14th Jany 1845 both in the land therein named and also in the Bonds in testimony whereof they the said Henry B. This Indenture made this the 13th August 1847 between Larkin Shiflette of the 1st part, James Chapman of the 2nd part and Elizabeth Shiflette, Overstreet Shiflette, Polly Jarrell, Thornton Mooney, & Parrotte Elliott, of the 3rd part, the said Larkin, and the last mentioned parties of the County of Greene & James Chapman of the County of Albemarle. Whereas the said Larkin Shiflette is justly indebted to the said Elizabeth Shiflette in the sum of Eighty dollars for four years services, & to Overstreet Shiflette in the sum of one hundred & twentyfive dollars for five years services, & to Polly Garrell in the sum of twenty dollars & to Thornton Mooney in the sum of ten dollars & 50, & to Parrotte Elliot, to be paid to the said parties severally on or before the 1st day of August 1853, now which debts the said Larkin Shiflette is willing and desirous to secure. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that for and in consideration of one dollar of lawful money of Va. to the said Larkin Shiflette in hand paid by the said James Chapman at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Larkin Shiflette has given, granted, bargained & sold unto the said James Chapman his heirs and assigns forever; the following property to Wit: One tract of land on which the said Larkin Shiflette now lives on containing one hundred & fifty acres, with its appurtenances thereto belonging, three beads & furniture stids & one corn, one cotton wheel, one flour wheel, 2 pots & 1 oven, 1/2 doz. pewter plates, 1/2 doz. earthen plates, 1/2 doz. cups & saucers, 2 pottle basins, & 2 p--nt basins, 4 kives & six forks, 2 dirt dishes, 4 hilling hoes, 2 axes & one hatchet, two pair of pot hooks, 2 plow hoes, two cows & one calf, 8 head of sheep, one bay mare, 2 pair of pot hooks, 2 plow hoes and one stack, one collar plow, 2 chest, one brueau, 2 old cubboards, and one pullen bar & two locks, 2ssits of plow gurs, 8 chairs, 5 cider barrels, & 2 old hogsheads, and 1/2 dozen earthen boles & 5 jugs; to have and to hold the aforesaid property unto the said James Chapman his heirs and assigns, clear of the said Larkin & his heirs & assigns & all other persons: upon trust ---theless, that the said James Chapman his heirs & assigns, shall permit the said Larkin Shiflette his heirs & assigns, to remain in quiet and peaceable possession of the said property, and take the profits thereof to his own use, until default be made in the payment of the said sums of money, either in the whole or in part. And then upon further trust, the said James Chapman and his heirs or assigns, so soon after the happening of such default of payment as he may think proper, sell the said tract of land and all the aforesaid personal property or sufficient part thereof as may be necessary to pay the said several debts -& such costs as may accrue, attending the execution of this trust, after having fixed the time & place of sale at his own discretion & given 20 days notice thereof; and out of the moneys arising from such sale after sattisfying the charges thereof pay to the said parties their several debts, or in proportions to the proceeds of sales and the balance if any, pay to the said Larkin or his heirs or assigns; but if the whole of said debts be paid of before the time above fixed, then this Indenture to be void, or also to remain in full force and virtue. Whereas the said John Shiflett is just indebted to the said Wm T Earley in the sum of forty dollars due by bond & Whereas the said Wm. T. Early is security for the said John Shiflett in a bond for five hundred dollars bearing date this date, conditioned to assure the appearance of said John Shiflett before the justices of the County court of Albemarle at November term next on the 1st thursday of that month to answer a charge of pergury, the payment which ---- first sums of money the said John Shiflett is desirous to secure to the said Wm. T. Earley as well as to indemnify the said Wm T Early against all possible detriment from the said liability as surety aforesaid -- Now this Indenture Witnesseth for and in consideration of the premises and the further consideration of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said JE Chapman and Wm Thompson the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hat granted bargained, sold and conveyed and doth by these presents grant bargain sell and convey unto the said James E Chapman & Wm Thompson two certain tracts or parcels of land that are lying in the upper part of Browns Cove, in the County of Albemarle being the tract bought by me the said John Shiflett of Mr Kember & Col Givens containing by estimation about 355 acres be the same more or less, the other tract lying in Bemis Holler in Albemarle, adjoining Lewis Shiflett and others, being the tract at present occupied by James A Currier containing about 122 acres be the same more or less - - To Have and to hold the above said premises to the said Jas. E Chapman & Wm Thompson their heirs and assigns forever - Upon trust nevertheless that the said Chapman and Thompson shall permit the said John Shiflett to remain in quiet and peaceable possession of the above granted premises until default of payment of the debt hereby intended to be secured or the said John Shiflett shall fail to comply in whole or in part with the condition of the above obligation above recited to which the said Wm T Earley is security. And in case the said debt is not paid, or the said Wm T. Early shall have to pay or become bound by judgment of Court to pay the said sum of five hundred dollars mentioned in said bond, or any part thereof or any ---- --- of ---- prosecution of the said John Shiflett for purgury, then upon further trust then the said Chapman & Thompson after having advertised the time and place of sale in some news-paper published in the town of Charlottesville for two or more weeks successively and also for the same ---- at two or more public places in the neighborhood of each of the above granted premises, shall empower the same or either of them or so much of either of them as may necessary to satisfy the purpose of this trust, and out of the proceeds of sale, the said trustees, or either of them, shall pay to the said William T. Brown his heirs etc. forever the following property to wit, One Three horse wagon, Three mares, two greys & one Bay & their Increase, all of my wagen harness, plough geer etc., one gun, one Saddle, all of my Crop of Lenn, Oats, Buckwheat & Tobacco, Staves, Shingles etc. & all else that I own: To have and to hold unto the said William W. Witnesseth that the said John Shiflett & his wife for and in consideration of four hundred & fifty - dollars currant money have given granted bargained and sold and by these presents do give grant bargain and sell unto the said Lewis Shiflett and to his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County aforesaid, containing one hundred & twenty four acres be the same more or less, lying on the foot of the Mountains on Kidds creek and bounded as follows to wit. Polly Garrels gives the Register to im----- and that Stclair T. Dean the County Surveyor of Greene County made a Survey on the 4th day of April 1856 for H. B. Shifllett or for Henry B. Shifllett No. of Warrant sent by said surveyor for said H.B. Shifllett is 23595, and number of acres claimed 340 agreeably to the certificate of the said County Surveyor for the said Henry B. Shifllett. To all of which proceedings your undersigned caveator objects, for the following reasons - In the first place she has paid the tax on one hundred acres of it for more than twenty years and on thirty nine acres for a few years, having patent for the last amount of acres, and having been in possession of the same upward of forty years, and she claims the whole tract by the will of Jacob Shifllett who claims under a deed from his father John Shiflett who was in peaceable possession upwards of sixty years being the same land that is now taken up by said Henry B. Shifllett, within your counties boundaries as follows- Beginning on Lynches river at Henry Austin's corner thence with his line to the corner of John Lane's heirs, thence with their line to the corner of Wyatt Mills heirs, thence ------ side of the poison knowles and from thence along the Butter pole hill to the beginning. - You are therefore requested not to open any patent or grant to said Henry B. Shifllett for the reasons above stated and enter this caveat of the undersigned until the matter is determined law. The land within the above boundary has been surveyed by the County Surveyor, and it makes 542 acres, and has been ------ to your caveator. therefore for these reasons she asks the Register of said Land Office to enter this her caveat to the said H. B. Shifllett, as she has the proper evidence and documents to show that the land within said boundaries belongs to her.

Whitesel of the other part both of the County of Augusta and State of Virginia, whereas a marriage is about to be solemnized between the two parties hereto and each of them being possessed of property and estate, which it is desired by them shall not be affected by their marriage, it is hereby mutually agreed between the parties that neither of them shall receive any right, title, or interest whatsoever in the estate, real or personal, of the other by reason of the marriage aforesaid, but that each of them shall retain and at all times have the right to exercise absolute control and ownership over their respective estates in as full and ample manner as if said marriage had never taken place and each had remained sole and unmarried. Shiflett and Elizabeth Shiflett his wife, Melissa Herring, Amanda J. Herring and Polly Shiflett, wife of Stephen Shiflett, Honorias Powell, Wm. L. Powell of the first part and Bland Herring of Albemarle County of the second part, all of the State of Virginia. Witnesseth that in consideration of $150 in hand paid to them the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge being the first above named party in this writing and the heirs of the dec'd Loudon Herring, doth grant, bargain and sell and release unto Bland Herring all their entire right, title and interest in a certain tract of land lying in the County of Albemarle formerly owned by the deceased Loudon Herring and adjoining the lands of Archibald T. Witnesseth, That the said Henry Shifflet has this day bargain and sold to the sd Ahas Shiflett all his interest in the landed estate of his father Merry Shiflett and his Mother Icy Shiflett formally Icy Snow for which a portion of said land came by her Father John Snow decd. which said land is lying in the County of Greene and adjoining the lands of Early Snow, Hardin Shiflett and others for the sum of Twenty dollars to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof is acknowledge for which the said Henry Shiflet binds himself his heirs and assigns to warrant and defend the right and title of said interest in land to the said Ahas Shifflett his heirs and assigns free of all claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever, for which we here unto fix our hands and seals this day and date above written. This Deed made the 15th day of January in the year 1862 Between James M. Lilly & Mary C. his wife & Millissa Shiflett, Witnesseth that in consideration of two hundred & eighteen dollars, the said James M. Lilly & Mary C. his wife do grant unto the said Millissa Shiflett all their right, title, and interest in the following parcel of land reserving the right to all the timber of any description on the west side of the old road passing through said land, to remove the same at their option. The said land supposed to contain ten acres, three roods and twenty-four poles, being the residue of a tract purchased by said Lilly at a sale of Sheffey and Bumbgardner, Beginning at a stone in Husseys & S. W. Mooneys corner S 34 3/4 W 73 1/2 poles to a black oak corner to W. P Tates line to a stake on the boundary line of Husseys line and with the same S 72 E to the beginning. This Deed made the 21th day of June 1862 between Tipton P. Walton and Sally N. his wife of the first part and Albert M. Shiflett of the other part all of the county of Greene and state of Virginia Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and forty nine dollars, the receipt whereof is here by acknowledged the said first named party in this deed does grant unto the said second party a certain lot or parcel of land being a portion of the farm on which the said first named party resides, Bounded by Beginning at a chesnut oak & large rock on the top of a clift in Thornton Mooneys line, and running with the said line N13 1/2 degrees E15 poles to a hickory and rock corner said Mooney thence N8 1/2 E20 poles to a hickory, thence N14 1/2 E48 poles to a dogwood and chesnut on the mountain, thence N60 1/2 E72 poles to chesnut oak saplings on the top of the mountain, thence S17 1/2 degrees E134 poles to a chesnut oak on the side of the mountain, corner with Overton Shiflett, thence East 58 1/2 poles to two chestnut from one stump, thence N68 E24 to a chestnut oak corner with said Shiflett, thence S73 1/2 E10 poles to a hickory and dogwood corner with A. Gentry in said Shifletts line, thence with Gentry's line S58 1/2 degrees W54 poles to a chestnut oak, thence S31 W36 poles to a chesnut chesnut oak and pine corner with said Gentrys, thence a new line N67 3/4 W156 poles to the beginning, containing Eighty three acres and the said Gentrys in this deed hereby released to the said grantee all their claims upon the said land and covenant that they will warrant generally the property hereby conveyed witness the following signatures and seals

Andrew J. Long and William S. Shiflett, Articles of Agreement

This record was filed as exhibit C in the Greene Co. lawsuit, Wm.S. Shiflett vs. Margaret J. Long et al.

Article of agreement made and entered into this 19th day of December, 1862, between Andrew J. Long of the one part, and William S. Shiflett of the other part, witnesseth that the said Andrew J. Long, having this day purchased of James Beazley two parcels of land--one containing one hundred acres, adjoining B.F. Powell, and others on which the said Shiflett now resides, the other, containing fifty acres, adjoining the said 100 acre tract, Henry B. Shiflett and others, on which Stephen Shiflett resides, for which he gave one thousand, seven hundred and eight dollars and twenty-five cents; now the said Andrew J. Long, on his part, agrees to let the said William S. Shiflett have the use and possession of the said parcels of land for five years from this date, on the condiditon of his (the said Shiflett) paying him (the said Long) the interest on the said purchase money ($1,708 and 25 cents) punctually at the end of each year, and at the end of the said five years, if the said Shiflett has paid up punctually said interest as before directed, and will then pay up the whole of the principal sum, he, the said Long, binds himslf to make the said Shiflett a deed of conveyance to said tracts of land in fee simple, such as he gets from James Beazley, Sr., and the said William S. Shiflett, on his part, agrees to take the said parcels of land as set forth above, and to pay up the said interest annually and to take good care of said lands and keep them in as good repair as though they were his own lands. In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals the day and date first above written.

This deed made the fifth of March in the year eighteen hundred and sixty-eight between Christina Shiflett, the widow of Benson Shiflett, deceased, Henry B. Shiflett and his wife Martha J. Shuffled, Joseph Berry and his wife Sarah F., Levi G. and his wife Parthena, Cornelius T. Shiflett and his wife Moria, of the first part and Milton B. Shiflett of the second part and all of Greene. Co. & State of Virginia, Witnesseth that the said Christena Shiflett, the widow of Benson Shiflett, deceased, Henry B. Shiflett and his wife Martha J. Shiflettt, Joseph Berry and his wife Sarah F., Levi J. and his wife Parthena, Cornelius T. Shiflett and his wife Moria, for and in consideration of seventy-five dollars current money of Virginia to them paid in hand by the said Milton B. Shiflett doth convey all our interest in a small lot or parcel of land in the county of Greene Lying on the county line mountain Beginning on a pine and mapil and starting on the south side of Lincues River thence a straight line to the top of the hill corner a chestnut thence a straight line to a corner Hickory thence a straight line to the line of A.J. Longs line, thence with his line to the river and with the River to the Beginning, containing thirty acres be the same more or less and each for himself & heirs does warrant generally to the said Milton B. Shiflett their entire interest in the above mentioned lot or parcel of land, Severally convoyed Witness the following signatures and seals the day and year first above written
