Alman Bruce owned and was buried at Headquarters. The home now called Headquarters was built by Benjamin Brown and was completed in 1769 (Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello wasn't started until 1770). The home was originally named Mountain View and remained in the Brown family, except 1785-1800, until 1875. Alman Bruce brought the home from Thomas H. Brown on 18 June, 1875. The Bruces borrowed the name Headquarters for the home from the home now called Brightberry. Tradition is that the original Headquarters (now called Brightberry) was the headquarters of General Stonewall Jackson as he and his men passed through Brown's Cove in the Spring of 1862. |
