Shiflets and the Civil War: "Border Guards" Co. D 46th Reg. Infantry


Organization

INFANTRYMEN were foot soldiers. They traveled from place to place by marching, in all types of weather. Each infantryman carried his own weapon - a rifled musket and bayonet - along with personal belongings and equipment, and food for several days. Most soldiers were in the infantry.   1. Pvt. Co. D2, Enl 6-15-61 Charlottesville, C rank, 1yr. captured at Roanoke 2-8-62 paroled Elizabeth City, N.C. 2-21 did not report back to 46th VA after exch, KIA at Brandy Station 6-9-63 while with Co. A, 35 Bn., Va Cav.
  2. Chapman B. Shiflett, Border Guards, Co. D, 46th Va. Reg. Infantry, transferred to Calvary, Co. A, 35th Battalion VA Calvary, where source #1 says he was KIA. The Shiflet book lists only one Chapman Shiflett, b. 1813, s/o Stephen Shiflett; Chapman m. 29 Jan 1837, Christean Shiflett, had 12 children with her between 1837 - 1856. Chapman d. before 2 May 1868, when the heirs of Stephen Shiflett deed land; Christean is called the "widow of Chapman".

  2. F.M. Shiflet- There is a Francis M. Shiflet listed on the 1850 & 1860 Greene Co. Census. He was b. c. 1844 and is the son of Burton and Nancy E. "Winny" Frazier Shiflet. This may be the same F.M. Shiflet listed above. No further information is given for a marriage or children.

    1) John T. Shifflett b.c. 1842, listed on the 1870 Madison Co., VA census as the Head of Household/Shoemaker. He is also listed in the household of George W. Shifflett, b. 1858.
    2)John Turner Shiflet, b. 15 Oct 1840, Greene Co., d. 19 Apr 1918, bur. Prize Hill Cemetery; s/o Gatewood and Lucinda Shiflet; m. 1) 17 Oct 1861 Rockingham Co. Harriet C. Shiflett, b.c. 1840, d/o Felix and Phoebe Shiflett; had four children; m. 2) 1 May 1887 Maducia A. Herring b. 12 Jan 1860, d. 21 Sep 1936, d/o Kennel and Elva Herring; had three children.

Lee's amnesty order 2-6-65: paroled at Apptx.

Leake b.c. 1844, d. Dec 1879. Spouse: Eliza Jane Johnson, d. 23 Apr 1925, d/o Robert & Frances Ann Johnson. Had 4 children w/Eliza from 1872 - 78.

  2. Border Guards, Co. D, 46th Va. Reg. Infantry. There are two Lindsay Shiflets, each of whom might be the one who served with the 46th:
    1) Lindsay Shifflett b.c. 1831, son of Howard Shiflet. He is on the 1870 Rockingham Co. census, living w/ Howard Shiflet and a black domestic servant. In 1880 he is listed on the Rockingham Co. Census as single and the son of Howard Shiflet.
    2)Lindsay Shiflett, b. c. 1818; s/o John Shiflett and Elizabeth Campbell. m. 27 Sep. 1847 Mary Jane Keaton b.c. 1830. Had 7 children with her: 1847 - 1860; 2 children: 1868 - 70. Listed on the 1850 & 1860 Albemarle Co. Census. In 1880, Mary Jane is listed as a widow on the Alb. Co. Census.

Micajah B. Shifflett
  1. Pvt Co D2, KIA at Petersburg 1864 Confed. Roster
  2. Micajah B. Shifflett, Border Guards, Co. D, 46th Va. Reg. Infantry, Killed at Battle of Petersburg 1864. He was b. 1835, prob. Orange Co., VA, the son of Micajah (b.c. 1790) and Charlotte "Lottie" or "Lodia" b. c. 1802 (Shiflett) Shiflett. No records have been found of a marriage for Micajah B.

Montgomery Shifflett

  2. May be Montgomery Shiflett, b.c 1846; listed on the 1850 and 1860 Albemarle Co. Census as the son of Louis and Eliza Shiflett.
