Shiffletts and the Civil War: 33rd and 52nd Virginia Regular Infantry

With the exception of Pemberton and Edward Shifflett, all of the following men are listed in both the 52nd and 33rd VA Infantry. Pemberton is listed as serving only in the 33rd. Also, Samuel B. is reported as being paroled from the 33rd on 5-22-65, and enlisting on 5-22-65 in the 52nd. I do not know if this information is correct, or an error.

Present 1/1862 - 3/1862. AWOL 4/26-30/1862. Reenlisted 5/1/1862. AWOL 6/6/1862-12/21/1862. Present in arrest 1/1863-2/1863. Discharged for over age 5/21/1863. Deserted to the enemy New Creek, WV 11/11/1864. Sent to Wheeling, WV. Arrested as a spy there 12/26/1864. Sent to Camp Chase. Age 47, 5' 9.5", fair complexion, grey eyes,
light hair. Released 6/26/1865. Farmhand, age 49, Mt. Sidney P.O., Augusta Co., Va. 1870 Census.
There is one Franklin Shifflett that would fit this time period: Franklin Shifflett, b.c. 1833, listed on the 1850 Albemarle Co. Census as the son of Michael Shifflett.

Givens Shifflett
Givens Shifflett, Private Co. C, 33rd Va. Inf.; born Albemarle Co. ca. 1824 Farmer, age 36, 1st Dist., Augusta Co., 1860 census. Enlisted at Staunton, VA. 7/16/1861. No further record on muster rolls. Listed Capt. Furgneson's Co. L, 93rd Va. Militia 3/1862. Exempt for rupture. Farmer, age 50, Pastures Dist., Augusta Co. 1870
census. Died near Craigsville 1/25/94 in 74th year. Buried in neighborhood burying
ground near his residence.

Laborer, age 23. Waynesboro, Augusta Co. 1860 census. enlisted Waynesboro 7/15/61; Captured Alleghany Mt. 12/13/61. Sent to Camp Chase. Transf. to Johnson's Island. died of disease on trip to Vicksburg, Miss. to be exchanged 12/7/62. age 23, 5'10 1/2"; fair complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair. See also Rockingham County Men.
There is a Pemberton Shifflet listed on the 1860 Greene Co. Census as "Pemp.", b.c. 1846; the son of Nick and Nancy Shiflet.
