October the 26th, 1862
Taylor County KY

Dear wife, I take the opportunity to right you a few lines this morning to let you no that I am well at this time and hope when you git these few lines tha will find you and the children all well. I receved your letter a few days ago but we was on a march and didn't hav time to right to you tell this morning. I sent you a letter ten days before I got yourn with eighteen dollars in hit all the money I had. So right as quick as you can for I am aferd that the letter and the money is all gon. Tha is one ten dollar bill one five dollar bill and three dollar bills in the letter so if you hant got hit git John (missing) to lend you fifteen dollars and I will pay him the money when I get pade again which will be in les than one month. If you hant got that money right as quick as you can and I (unreadable). I suppose you herd about George Ennis being shotthrough the hart and dide instantly. I was right clos to him and my cap box wasshot off of my belt and fore bullets holes in my blouse and my gun barrel shot off at the britch and hit started me so that I had to leave the field for a little while but I got another gun and went back but the rebbles run. We whip them bad by that morning but tha like to kild me but tha didnt but tha will never come enny nerer without kilen me. My leg was sore for two weeks but hit is nearly well no so I must close. It is a dredful morning, coald and the snow is for inches deepe and the buches is bent down to the ground with snow and I amnearly bearfooted. My feete is in the ground so I am in a bad fix you made a pend but I cant helpit. So you do the best you can. I donte no when I will git home. I am intirley out of hearte. so goodby my dear wife untell death.
