Comments: 1841 Greene County Will Book #1, p. 11, Jacob Shiplett names Madison, Burton, Jefferson, Virenda Jane and July Ann Catharine, whom he refers to as "each and every of my children born unto me by the said Polley Garrell." He earlier identifies Polley Garrell as "formerly Polley Self." This will has been entered on the Wills page. I am descended from Jefferson Shifflet, who was born approx. 1807.

A Quick Story submitted by Wendy Mathias mathwendy27@gmail.com

Here is just a good story for your entertainment because I know you were interested in Michael "Miley" Frazier. My cousin [the 94 year old one -- what a great woman! I had never met her before, but we spent the afternoon looking at old photos I inherited. She identified MOST of the people!] remembers Uncle Miley as a real "character" who would do "crazy stuff" like ride his horse through the house. She told me the story of the time Miley woke "Uncle Connie" (John Conway Shiflett) because it was his turn to put the coals and wood on the fire. Miley woke him by throwing hot coals in Connie's bed. The two of them started to fight and didn't stop fighting until the bed burned down to the springs. Then the two threw water on the bed to put out the fire. After they were safe, they resumed fighting.

The December 21 1931 Sidney (OH) Daily News (price, 3 cents) carried the following front-page story:

"Occupants of Auto Thrown Into Street Following Collision Mrs. W. F. Baldwin, of No 614 Third Avenue Dies of Injuries on Way to Hospital -- Mrs. G. A. Wiford, of Same Address, Driving the Auto, Suffers Severe Injuries"

A bad accident occurred at the corner of Main avenue and North Street at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon resulting in the death of Mrs. W. F. Baldwin 65 years old [she was 75] of No. 614 Third avenue and injuries to Mrs. G. A.Wiford, of the same address, when a Chevrolet auto driven by Mrs. Wiford collided with a south bound Western Ohio car.

According to stories told by eyewitnesses, and by Mrs. Wiford herself, she was driving toward the west on her way home. She told the officers that she did not notice the traction car until it was too late. She rammed into it.

The traction car was in the middle of the street as the amber lights were changing. The auto struck the car with terrific force swerved completely around and struck a pole at the northeast corner of the intersection.
Both women were thrown out of the auto into the street, Mrs. Wiford through the door and Mrs.Baldwin through the wind shield. Aid quickly went to them. They were loaded into Harry Hergenrather's machine, and assisted by J. N. Helpbringer were taken to the hospital. Mrs. Baldwin was dead before the hospital was reached. Her skull was fractured, arms broken and her chest crushed. She never regained consciousness after the crash.

Mrs. Wiford was cut about the face and head and suffered greatly from shock. The traction car in charge of Motorman Elmer Meyers of Piqua was stopped immediately after the accident.

Coroner Becker was called to investigate the accident.
The body of Mrs. Baldwin was taken to the Dearth Undertaking parlor to be prepared for burial.

Mrs. Baldwin has been making her home with the Wifords for the past year. She came to Sidney from Boulder, Colorado. Five children survive her: Nelson and Bertram, Mrs. Stella Hibbard and Mrs. Roy Robertson, of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Edward of Boulder, Colorado. A brother, Nelson Shiflet, of Jackson Center, and two sisters, Mrs. G. A. Wiford of Sidney, and Mrs. Leota Drury of 628 Richard street, Dayton.

Short funeral services will be held at the Wiford home Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.

The remains will then be taken to Jackson Center, where the deceased was born and reared, and where funeral services will be held at the Seven Day Baptist church at that place. Burial in Jackson Center Cemetery.

Note from Kurt: Mrs. Kantner, who went by her middle name Rachel, was epileptic. She died in her sleep with her arms so tightly wrapped around her husband that her arms had to be broken to free Frank. He did not take her death well; Mom says he married "several" more times but never had a relationship that lived up to this one. This is supported by the fact that, despite the subsequent wives, Frank and Rachel are buried side-by-side outside Wapakoneta (I've been to their grave several times). Frank died virtually destitute, often (including the day he died) staying in but not an inmate of the Auglaize County Jail. Mom says her mother remembers taking food up to him there despite the fact that she was quite embarrassed by his status.

On a more positive note, this family (Kantner) truly pioneered that area of Ohio. Frank's father (who's obit I also have, along with his wife's) was born there in 1834, about two years after his father moved the clan there - virtually immediately after the Shawnees were forced out of the area. Auglaize County, in fact, wouldn't be created until 1848.

From the Wapakoneta Daily News dated June 15, 1936
