Stationery: a small American flag, waving in a gentle breeze.
August the 19th 1862
Camp Boiling Fork, Franklin County, Tennessee
Dear Daughter, I thout I wood right you a few lines this morning to
let you no that I am well at this time and hope when these few lines
comes to your hand tha will find you and your mother and your sisters
and your little brother all well. I want you to be a good girl and
mind your mother whatever she tells you and I want you to go to school
ever chance you git and Patsy tow and I will send you money anuf to
git you a nice dress and bonet and shoos and take good care of Mariah
and tell her that I want to see her mity bad and take good care of
little Jonney for I want to see him mity bad and I want to see your
mother the worst kind. I rote her a letter this morning. Tell Mariah
that I will bring her lots of candy when I come home. I dremp last
night aseeing all of you mity plain and tell Patsy that I dremp a
seeing her the plainest of enny of you and when I git paid off I will
send you mother thirty or forty dollars and she can git all of you a
fine dress apese and herself two and keepe plenty to eat and that is
good for I want you (missing line)
I want your mother to right me a letter ever weeke. I want your
mother to take Jo Kennedy to git his home gards and come along and
help us to keep the sesesh back for tha ar acomeing on us now. I
herde not five minets ago that tha was one hundred and eighty thousand
acoming soon but I shant fight much moore myself so Fanny, Farwell my
dear child.
